Well unfortunately the only Wilson I know is in White Co. IL. I really don't recognize those names but as you say, the names Riley, Rolly, Rawleigh and Rufus pop up. Depends on who spelled it. JANEAN, The Hamilton Co Davissons are ours and I just know there is some kind of connection, perhaps quite early between our Wilson family and the Whit Co Wilsons. They both carry some unusual given names including Riley/ Raleigh, Rufus. There were more, but I can't recall just now. One of our Davissons married into the White Co, IL Wilsons as I recall. I have not worked on the Davisson family other than to see that Edward was the earliest tracked and was b. in VA, but I don't know if that was the part which became WV. Have always thought The name is usually spelled Davisson but also found as Davison and as Davidson. Here is a list of our Wilson unusual given names starting with 1880s back to 1730s: Some have middle names, all have surname Wilson or Willson Arthur Dobbs Abram Bryant Becton Dink Tiller Dobbs Elisha Moore Ezekiel Hinton James Horace Isaac Isham Joel Louis Dicken Richard Ryley or Riley Shade Shadrach or Shadrack William Rufus Wylie Wiley White Willie Young I sure wish your Wilsons would do DNA. Hello Ed Please follow me with my theory. On the 1850 Barbour Co. census there is William F. Wilson age 63 and wife Jane age 60 living 2 houses away from Daniel Wilson, wife Naomi, son Frederick age 4, and son James L, age 2. Barbour Co. is formed from Harrison, Lewis, and Randolph Counties March 3, 1843. In 1851 Upshur Co. is formed from Barbour Co. James L. Wilson is there in 1860 and 1870. Then James moves in with Isabelle Lee's family in Webster Co. This traces James pretty good so far. Now back to William F. Wilson. The William Wilson line goes as William Sr. married Elizabeth Blackburn, son William Jr.(brother of Col. Benjamin Payne) married Sarah Friend, son William Friend Wilson b. 1787 married Jane Booth b.1790. William Friend Wilson was in Barbour Co. The ages match to the William F. and Jane on the 1850 Barbour Co. census. See where I'm at? Below is part of the 1850 Barbour Co. census. The house numbers show how close they lived to each other. It is known that William Friend Wilson gave the land to build the Court House that would become the County Seat of Barbour Co.. He acquired the land from Daniel Booth. I think his father in Law. Son Daniel Wilson, James' father, would be named for Daniel Booth. What I need to do is document this theory. Al Wilson http://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/va/barbour/1850/pg0097a.txt LN HN FN LAST NAME FIRST NAME AGE SEX RACE OCCUP. VAL. BIRTHPLACE 2 1406 1406 Wilson Wm F. 63 M . However, the city had existed for a long time before that. The land where the city is now located was originally called "Anglin's Ford," after the land's owner, William Anglin. No record has been found of William Anglin before 1789, but it is very likely that he lived in the area as early as 1783 or 1784. The land came into the possession of Daniel Booth around 1800. He had lived in the area since about 1787. After he gained possession of the land, it became known as "Booth's Ferry." The town's current name, Philippi, was established by the Act forming the county. By that time, the land was owned by William F. Wilson. The county court was to be built on two acres of land that would be bought from, or donated by, Mr. Wilson. The Wilson family was of Scot origin, According to family tradition, David Wilson born 1685 in Scotland, son of David Davis Wilson and grandson of Dan'd Wilson, supported the Stuart family in their effort to overthrow the Hanoverian monarch of England in 1715. After the defeat of the Stuarts at the battle of Preston in 1715. David fled to Ulster Ireland where he died. His son William born 11/16/1722 in Ulster married Elizabeth Blackburn, daughter of Archibald Blackburn in 1746 in Frederick Co VA. William died 9/2/1801 near Hardy Co. WV. Elizabeth born 1725 in Ireland died 9/2/1806. William and Elizabeth are buried on the Whitman farm near Wardensville. Maybe this is your Elizabeth Blackburn? Roger Wilson
Al, Brenda and Ed, I have listed William Wilson (sr) m. Elizabeth Blackburn (no dates or places) son William Wilson (jr) m. Sarah Friend (no dates or places) son William Friend Wilson b. 1787 m. abt 1812 Jane Booth b. abt 1790 (no places) son Isaiah Wilson b. May 1816 m. abt 1840 Deborah Yoke (no places) dau Angeline Wilson b. May 7, 1843 Barbour Co., WV. m. Oct. 24 1861 Philippi, Barbour, WV. d. July 27, 1874 Philippi She had married my G?grandfather Levi Hooker Campbell Doug Campbell
Brenda, I have records of a Friend family around 1800 in Chesterfield County, VA. Descendents moved to what is now Pittsylvania County, VA (near Danville) and married into families that descended from Morgan and William Henderson Wilson of Henry County, VA. Others of the Henry County Wilson's appeared to have migrated west to TN. These families tended to relocate in groups of siblings or first cousins so we may be able to fill gaps in each others genealogy. Do you have any other Friend names besides Sarah? Other family names that maybe linked are Guthrie, Walke, Branch or Barker.
