Hi Janean, I had seen some information posted by another person that spoke of the Chalfant and Wilson families. It stated from a manuscript "Memorandum Record of the Chalfant Family of America with Notes on the Chalfants of England" prepared in December 1938 by William Bergen Chalfant. It states that Samuel Parker Chalfant married Margaret Matilda Wilson - who was the eldest of 10 children born to Smith Wilson and Jane Latta Corbett who were married near New Town in Virginia by Rev. Le Grand, Presbyterian minister whose daughter acted as bridesmaid. Jane Corbett's mother is said to have been a Latta. Smith Wilson was one of a family of seven brothers born in Letterkenny, County Antrim Ireland, of whom was no less than six when emigrated to America in 1805. The family were of the artisan class, Smith himself being a weaver, others hatters and so on, the brother that remained in Ireland became a Doctor. Some of this is Wolfe's History of Sullivan Co., IN & some of it is my added notes. Peter Wilson during his youth left his native state of Virginia [Hampshire/Hardy Co., area], crossing the mountain barrier into Tennessee [Greene Co.], where he lived long enough to marry and start a family, and in 1828 came to Sullivan County [Indiana] with his brothers, John [b:ca 1788 TN], Adam [b:ca 1884 VA] and George [b:ca TN]. [Some of the Welty family from Greene Co., TN, also came to Sullivan Co., IN]. Peter Wilson was the son of a Revolutionary soldier [John Wilson, b:ca 1761--Peter's mother was Sussanah Kautzman--Sussanah's father was Henry Kautzman], himself served in the war of 1812, and members of the family have served in every important war of the nation. The Wilson's are still well represented in the citizenship of this county [Sullivan Co., IN]. I am researching the John Wilson-John Wilson line. My Wilson line married into the John Welty line in Greene Co., TN Thanks, Donna --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. There is a statewide marriage index that covers VA starting in 1853 (including the part that became WV). The index is available at the Library of Virginia and some other libraries. It can be borrowed through interlibrary loan (at least within Virginia). The index starting with 1853 includes the age of each of the couple, the county and date where the marriage took place. Additional information in the marriage record includes the birth place of the couple, current living place (county), parents of the couple (but not mother's maiden name), occupation of the husband and officiant. I may have a copy of the part of the index for the Wilsons in 1853-1859, but I would have to search for it. Sue -- "Al and Brenda" <[email protected]> wrote: Looking for family of James S. Wilson.
