I have a James Riley Wilson, minister, born 1784. He married first Margaret Green and second Sarah Cameron. He had a daughter Susan Caroline, born 1821. Nine children in all. I don't have anything more on Susan, but if the rest of my information matches yours, please contact me. I have ancestors for James and for his wives. This James' father was also James, minister, born 1745 in England, married to Agness Black. He also had a daughter Susan. Eight children in all, there. The name was spelled Willson, then. I have no information on where either man was in 1797, but they both died in Georgia. Alfred Wilson was born in Henderson Co. Tenn in 1821. I recently found him on a cesus that stated that his parents were from NC. Does anyone have any Wilsons that migrated from NC to the Henderson Co. Tenn area in that time period? Allene

Thank you so much for the history lesson. The more I learn, the more I realize how little I still know. Actually we connected to some of these folks who came down from DE and PA later on after our family went west. But the ones in early York, James City Co, Charles City Co, Kent, Isle of Wight and Surry as well as just across the border in NC border counties seem isolated from the Scotch Irish of Augusta Co and the ones down from PA etc., as though it was a different motivation that brought them. MARK, I have a question: when I hit reply on your messages it brings up only your address not the list, while a reply to other posters brings up the Wilson site.
You will find that except for some Wilsons that landed a little bit earlier, many Wilsons landed in Pilladelphia, Pennsylvania (or New Castle Delaware) as early as 1700. You can trace them by following the establishment of the early Presbyterian colonies. Check the early wills in Chester, PA, Kent, MD, and the New Castle, Delaware area. Over the years from 1700 to 1750 many went west, first to Lancaster, many on to Augusta County, Virginia, and others went down the valley of Virginia to North Carolina. The Augusta County, Virgina settlers (lots of Wilsons including John Wilson, "the Burgess" were Presbyterians. Earlier Wilsons, such as a Thomas Wilson can be found in Orange County, Virgina records. Augusta County, Virginia (that area) was first Orange County. This Thomas Wilson was from Pennsylvania. Also check the records of the Tinkling Springs Presbyterian church in Augusta County. Augusta County was formed about 1736. These individuals were from Pennsylvania and the Augusta colony was backed by the Presbyterians of Pennsylvania. Other records show some of the early Wilsons were from Maryland. These Wilsons can also be traced back further to the Philadelphia and Chester County, PA area. You will find records on the very earliest such as Hugh; Thomas; George; Robert and many others. They all came to America from Ulster plantation and are closely connected to the Patton, Buchannan, Preston and other early families. You can find early advertisements relating to the Augusta County, Virgina land posted by James Patton in the early news paper published by Benjamin Franklin of Philadelphia. There is a common story found in the Wilson family lore about a Thomas Wilson who was first to cross the river at the Battle of Boune (Willaim of Orange vs. James). Thomas Wilson and others received land in Ulster Plantation as a reward for their service in that war. Many were weavers from Scotland and the border area between Scotland and England. While in England and Scotland I discovered that the Wilson family were the ones that originated the idea to provide the various plad colors to designate the specific clan. They did this to sell their goods. Later, around 1690 to 1700 many left Ulster Plantation (Northern Ireland) for America. Many decided to go to Pennsylvania because they liked the religious climate there. They were called Scotch Irish but were really Scotch that lived temporarily in Ireland. The real Irish (Catholics) came much later about 1746 to 1750 because of the potato famine in Ireland. You can find out much more by studing the Presbyterian Colonies in PA (See early Pennsylvania Genealogy books) or taking a look at the Chronicles of the Scotch Irish (all about the settlement in Augusta, VA). You can find much of this on the Augusta County, VA website. Take out a map and take a look at the areas around New Castle, Delaware (its near Philadelphia). New Castle was one of the early places these individuals landed in the new world.

Bob, Of course later generations of the really early families did start the trek west, but in Burke and the other western counties, I seem to run into mostly the Scotch Irish who as I recall started coming into the country in large numbers about 1745. Hopefully someone on the list is better informed on the dates for the Scotch Irish than I am. I have been told that if your family came in earlier than 1745, chances are they are English. At any rate I use a Rand McNally Atlas and NC takes up two pages. The page on the right is pretty much what I think of as 'OLD' North Carolina. It is in this area where more of the families have been in the country for a long time and many have roots in VA. Sue and Peter, My Wilsons were in Burke Co., North Carolina. My Joseph Wilson Died in Burke Co. in the year of 1810. The only certainty of that is in the early probate court. Peter, Have you considered DNA for your branch. The WILSON DNA PROJECT is really lacking for Wilsons in SOUTHSIDE VA. & NORTHSIDE NC, the eastern part of each. Of the early Wilsons, it is my contention there are no more than 3 lines and probably only 2 in the NC/VA border area that was the earliest settled area of each colony, having spread out from Jamestown and the seacoast. Not much new blood came in after the mid 1700s because the land was all taken up and newer arrivals were headed to the unsettled land farther west. It would be wonderful to come up with the genetic signature (haplotypes) for those early Wilson families. Actually comes from a long line of Basil Wood from England. Joseph Wilson married Mary Wood 23 Nov 1762 and their son was Leighton whose son was Basil Wood Wilson. One of the Basil Wood married Abigail Leighton in 1714 and that is how the Leighton got into the picture. I appreciate the information. Peter, I know that Basil was used as a given name. However some think that it is a corruption of the English name Brasil or Brasswell or a zillion other forms but began with a family named Bracewell from York some of whom ended up in Isle of Wight, VA quite early. Thought it might tickle your curiosity.
