One more comment, then no more......DNA banks are only varied and helpful if many people participate....without having this type of information out on the lists where a potential DNA profile individual can be given information that this type of test is available they may never learn the info or have the profile completed.. I understand with my family's DNA the hopes is someday we can tell by profile results which Wilson's are English, Scottish or Irish. I know that would be appreciated. Some potential Wilson's thinking of participating in the DNA bank may never go to the DNA list and then all their data could possibly be missed. Just some thoughts..... S Wilson
One question in follow up --- why is not proper to discuss DNA with potential DNA matches.....I, as a Wilson ,find it very interesting to hear from fellow Wilson's and their questions and DNA results. S Wilson

Al, In order to determine once and for all if your Wilson line is connected to the Doe Hill Wilsons, you ought to have your DNA analyzed. Our Wilson DNA Project already has three or four participants who descend from the Doe Hill Wilsons. By comparing your DNA to theirs, you will know for certain whether or not there is a connection, and then you can better focus your research. If you would like to join the Wilson DNA project and get your DNA analyzed at a group discount rate, then following the instructions at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=T88756&special=true . I recommend beginning with the 25 marker test rather than the less expensive but less useful 12 marker test. I am looking for the parents of my G-G-G-grandfather James S. Wilson, who married Ann Ferrell, and died at Andersonville. On a search of 1840 Lewis Co. Wilson's that had son's in the "15 under 20" group, as James S. would be, I found that only a David Wilson would meet this requirement and end up in Upshur Co. On the 1860 Upshur census there are 5 head Wilson families there. They are Samuel, husband of Ann Siron, John W., son of Samuel, Gideon, son of Samuel, David Wilson, and my James S. Wilson. Upon looking for land records for David Wilson, I found that his father Samuel Wilson (not the Ann Siron Sam) left the next best thing to a Will. A land record listing all his children. They all give/sell the land (1,550 Acres in Lewis Co.) to David. It is on Sand Fork. There are two Sand Run, (Little Sand Run) rivers/creeks in Upshur/Buckhannon, where David lived. Land record dated July 30, 1846. Children of; Sam Wilson (deceased) Elizh. Sumner (nee Wilson) David John James Mary Bush (nee Wilson) Jane Vincent (nee Wilson) William Wilson, deceased, son of Sam Wilson, deceased. Children of William;, John, Mary, William Mary Hill (nee Bush), Jane Holder (nee Bush), George, Sam and Fernando Bush, children of Mary Bush (nee Wilson) deceased So this must be the Samuel Wilson that married Jane Armstrong, Nov., 18, 1819, in Pendleton Co. I need information on this family. Are they related to the family of Samuel Wilson that married Ann Siron? Are they another of the Doe Hill Wilson's? This could explain why my James S. Wilson enlisted in the same unit, the 133rd, as Gideon and John W. Wilson, son's of Samuel and Ann Siron, and why they lived so close together. I need to know if James S. was David's son. Al Wilson
I am looking for an Unknown Wilson man that married into the Cherokee Tribe, sometime in the early to mid 1700's. He had at least one son named Thomas Wilson,Sr was married 1st. to a Cherokee lady named Hicks and 2nd. to Betsy McCreary. Thomas SR had at least 3 sons: One son by Hicks was Thomas Wilson, JR., b.abt.1785, who worked as an interpreter for the U.S. / Cherokee treaties. His other son by McCreary was George W. Wilson, sr. b. abt. 1790 that married a Cherokee lady named Ruth Springston or Drumgoole (she went by both). I believe Thomas Sr. also had a son named John Wilson (Conoluski-sp?), but Ido not have any of his information. He was in Alabama.(no docs.) Thomas Wilson, SR was in the Cherokee Nation - in what is now GA- in the year 1834, and Thomas Wilson, JR was in NorthEast Alabama, and George Wilson, SR was at White Oak Mountain in TN, also in 1834. The same time, two of George Wilson, SR's sons, Alexander and Archibald was in the Mouse Creek and Candies Creek area. George, his family at home, his two sons Arch and Alex and one of the Thomas Wilson's emigrated to the new Indian Territory- what is now Oklahoma- arriving May 5, 1834- Lt. Harris company. I believe it was the younger Thomas Wilson that emigrated because a child of Thomas Wilson died in route to Indian Territory. Thomas Wilson, SR had at least one known sister, Kateeyeah(sp?) Wilson. She was married to Chief Doublehead of the Cherokee Nation. Since Thomas' sister has a Cherokee name, I do not know if their mother was Cherokee married to the Unknown Wilson, or if Kateyeah took the name when she married Doublehead. So either Thomas Wilson, SR was the first white to marry into the Cherokee line or it was his father that married a Cherokee and gave Kateyeah her name. My personal thought is that Thomas Wilson, Sr.s' Father was the first to marry into the Cherokee line.Making the first Wilson to have been born about 1730- 1745, giving that Thomas Wilson, SR was born about 1750- 1765 and Thomas JR. born 1785, unless there was alot more children born before in there. I am having trouble jumping from the Cherokee into the white genealogy. I would assume that at this early date that the first White man to marry into the Cherokee would have been a fur Trader. It was very common for a White man to take a Cherokee wife, even if he was already married to a white woman. This gave him a place to stay during trading times and more freedom to move about the Nation. It also makes it hard to realize that these early Traders lived two separate lives, one with each wife. Many people have told my that it couldn't be their Wilson because theirs were already married. So if anyone has a Wilson that was a Fur Trader in the early to mid 1700's please let me know. I just have the basic info on this line, but would like to get it back another Generation or two before starting on lateral lines. Any help, info, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Pat
Hi Valerie As I mentioned in my original post "I have no other information on James and Matilda Wilson, living possibly in NY abt. 1840. Other than their names and the one known child born unto them Charles Henry Wilson." I only know of the one child, for I have never found the parents and Charles Henry listed in 1850 or 1860 census and if I could, then I could see if there were any other siblings or even grandparents. The reason I put 1840, is because Charles was born 18 Feb 1843, and in NY if you believe the census...His death certificate www.computer-firstaid.com/begnal_enterprises/genealogy/wilson/chwdeath.jpg states Place New York Town New York State of Country and for parents their names as above and New York City. This leads me to believe they were in the USA in 1843. But you cannot believe death certificates either. When Charles H. Wilson died, 12 Aug 1894, New Haven, CT, he was 51 and very possible his parents still alive. I do not know if Charles came to America on his own or with his parents. Just because the death cert. states New York City, I have a grandmother born in Hungary and every US census has she was born in New York. I go by census first to locate the family and then to city directories to locate each year if possible. This helps me to know when they left NY and moved to CT. Your Wilsons being from Orang Co. is quite possible my Wilsons come from there. Buy New York City (Manhattan) is not in Orange Co. I subtract 20 years from a birth date to come up with an approximate year born of the parents. So I place James and Matilda being born about 1823. Sometimes the men are older, so your John could possibly be a brother or cousin to my James. However, I have not one piece of evidence to point to your John, Orange Co. or NJ. Just the death certificate of Charles. The birth info I have on one of his sons my great grandfather Charles Garfield Wilson, is 18 Nov 1868, Spring (which is a street), mother, Mary H. Coan, born Ireland and father Charles H. Wilson, New York. And Charles G. is listed as Charles A. However, per the 1st Congregational Church, New Haven...he is Charles Garfield and the obits. Who are John Wilson's children, wife? How far back have you found him by documents? I have you ever used RAOGK? I belong to Ancestry, HQ and FHC, and you would think I could find a James, Matilda and Chas/Charles age 12 (1860) or 17 (1870) in the census and without using a state. I have come very close, only if his wife's name was not Matilda. I have seen Matilda with an H in it. Maybe she is called Mattie. I have a great Aunt born Adelaide Katherine Begnal, but she always went as Kate A., which is not hard to find. Another a great grandmother possibly named Mary Elizabeth O'Shaughnessy, and always known just Elizabeth, so I do not know if she has a middle name or Elizabeth is her middle name. I cannot find her with a birth year of about 1888 with parents in the 1900 census. I do not even know who her parents were. And I have found my Wilson's in the census as Wolson and Willson. But I have used every variation, with/without soundex, with wildcards and I even put together an Excel file with every variation I can think of, with columns & blocks for the census years I can check off, how many by a match of the given and surname there are for that particular census year. And if I find another possibility, I add to the file. Best wishes, I am sure you have tried everything and probably been researching longer than me......sorry if I was redundant and boring, Doc [email protected] wrote: > >In a message dated 1/30/2005 8:01:43 AM Eastern Standard Time, >[email protected] writes: > >My GGGGF is James and Matilda Wilson, living possibly in NY abt. 1840. > >This may come to naught, but my Wilsons are from Orange Co, NY which is >across the Hudson from that part of CT. After years and years of searching, I have finally identified my gggrandfather THOMAS PRATT WILSON's parents as FRANCIS and MARGARET WILSON of 1850 Newberry Co., SC. They are listed as "Poorhouse Keepers" in the 1850 Census. Their children were listed as Jane E., Margaret A., Thomas, Mary P., and Sarah F. Dena, Linda, and Eleanor have helped me trace them to Winston Co. MS, by 1860. Thomas had already taught school in Marshall County, Tennessee, and had married Rebecca Leah Dysart and had Baby Margaret Alice by then. He later had my ggrandfather, Samuel Andrew Stirling Wilson and Mary Thom Wilson before dying in the War for Southern Independence of smallpox. I have at least three questions if anyone can please help me: 1. Does anyone know anything about the parents, grandparents, national origin, etc. of this Francis Wilson, the Poorhouse Keeper, of Newberry County, SC? In what part of the county did he live? 2. I know Francis' wife's name was Margaret, but can anyone positively identify her with the Fleming family? Someone told me that her sister married Thomas Montgomery of Marshall County (Palmetto Community), formerly of Newberry County, SC. 3. Can anyone identify this family of Wilsons and possibly Montgomerys and Flemings to a Dianna(h) Wilson. She married (1) John Montgomery, a schoolteacher, and (2) a Mr. Titus or possibly North. There's a family tradition that she may have been an Indian princess. I will forever be indebted to anyone who can help me. Contact me at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) .
