Neil, Agree about Find A Grave. Technically it isn't a genealogy site but with 118 million records it's a great resource with lots of helpful volunteers. I've found lots of burial records for my Wilson's in PA, ID and OK. Mary, back in Feb 1998 we corres re our MARQUIS, VANCE, MCCAULEY,COLVILLE.. ancestors in 1700s Frederick Co, VA at which time you indicated "there is a question as to whether or not Wm MARQUIS b ca 1763 & Margaret COLVILLE were indeed Thomas' [b 1710] parents". Is anyone familiar with the following Wilson family living in Madison Co Florida in 1850? HH# 401 John Wilson 56 born SC (ca 1794) Sarah Wilson 46 " SC (ca 1804) Abraham Wilson 22 " SC (ca 1828) Thomas Wilson 20 " SC (ca 1830) Martha Wilson 18 " SC (ca 1832) James Wilson 14 " SC (ca 1836) John is shown as a farmer and the sons as laborers. Interested to learn where in SC they were living before going to Florida. Seeking a connection to a William Wilson family living in Walker Co GA in 1850. William and wife Sarah were born in SC according to that GA census. William born unknown area of SC ca 1799-1802 and Sarah unknown location born ca 1806-1812. Four sons and 6 daughters born to this family..Benjamin W. E. Wilson, ca 1829 SC; Mary M, ca 1837 SC; Abbie L, ca 1838 SC; Martha A, ca 1839 SC; James, ca 1841 SC; Suzy C, ca 1843 GA; Jerry M, ca 1845 GA; Minerva J, ca 1847 GA; Sarah E, ca 1849 GA and Abraham/Abram, ca 1852 in GA or AL. By 1860, William's family was in DeKalb Co AL. Abraham ended up in Morgan Co AL for the 1870 census and there he married Sarah Jane NeSmith. Their only child was my grandfather, William Martin Wilson, born 1874 in Morgan Co AL. William Martin Wilson moved to Navarro county in central TX around 1899 and was a circuit riding Baptist preacher and farmer. William Martin never discussed his father who disappeared just before he was born in 1874 and none of the family ever knew anything about Abraham/Abram's parents or siblings. Trying to find some way to discover just where in South Carolina William and Sarah Wilson lived before coming to GA around 1843.
Jan, I have never seen a Moses Wilson in my family line, not one. It appears to me that our family named their kids after relatives an military or political folks. I think it is interesting that my grandfather had a brother named Wade Wilson. Their father was James Webb Wilson, born May 22, 1832 son of John and Jane Wilson who were married in 196 in Missouri and moved to the Territory of Arkansas in 1817. I shared the information that I had on this family with another individual and he placed it on his webpage. I also sent copies of the same records to the New England Historical and Genealogical Society when they were asking for information regarding one Clarinda Wilson, who was an ancestor of President Bill Clinton, daughter of John and Jane Wilson. Quite a bit has been published about these people and I think you can find much more by searching for Susan Hunter, grandmother of Jane Reaves Wilson and John Wilson, include, keyword, Cherokee. I have been doing some angling on this family and have run into Wades, also, but do not have it nailed down. Thank you, Phoebe in CA Wilson, Reaves, Hunter, Hempstead Co. Arkansas PS My Uncle Wade Wilson was the editor a the Weaverville, Trinity Co., CA newspaper for many years. In a message dated 5/16/2012 11:07:39 A.M. She was born Oct. 30, 1811 Russell Co., KY and died Apr 21, 1876 Russell Co., KY. I am trying to determine the parents of Elizabeth Wilson. I'm pretty sure her father's name was Moses Wilson, probably born abt. 1788 Henry Co., VA & died abt. 1851 Russell Co., KY. What I don't know is her mother's name. Names have been thrown around like, Elizabeth Hopper and Peggy Milton but I'm just not sure. Elizabeth Hopper would be my guess because of the age (she was born 1781) so would have been about 32 when Elizabeth was born. Peggy Milton just does not fit because I have her birth as 1762 and she would have been 49 years old. Not impossible I guess but highly unlikely, in my estimation. Surely there is someone out there that ties in with this family. I have some errors in my Wilson file and I want to make sure I'm correct, before trying to correct them. Thanks for any help you can give.
