My WILLISs originated out of Northumberland and Durham Counties in England. They are mostly coal miners and many left England looking for more or better work. I've found living cousins in Australia! My great grandparents, George Sanderson WILLIS and his wife Mary Jane BERRY, emigrated with their children around mid to late 1880 and settled in Iowa. George died 11 years laters in an Iowa coal mining accident, leaving Mary Jane with 9 children ranging in age from 6 months to 16 years (They had a child about every 1 to 2 years! I can't imagine being pregnant for 16 years straight!) While my grandfather, John Frederick WILLIS married a Danish woman in North Dakota, Nelsia Magdalene PETERSON (changed from EIERSTED), and moved to Washington State, I believe most of his siblings stayed around Iowa. I would dearly love to find the descendants of these children. Janet Johnson Enumclaw, Washington, USA http://www.chimeraco.com/janetj Researching WILLIS and STANLEY (Durham and Northumberland, England); BERRYand CLARKSON (Lancashire, England); LARSSON/OLSSON/BENGTSSON and SJÖGREN (Skåne, Sweden); EIERSTED and JENSEN (Hjørring, Denmark); and PASCHKE and KLAWONN (Prussia) "Dance naked with a rose between your teeth if you want to... but do it like you mean it!"

Dear List, I haven't done much research on my Willis side but this is what I have. My maternal Great Great Grandfather was George WILLIS who was born at Basington County of Hants, England about 1818 to the parents of Stephen and Sarah WILLIS. He married Agnes HEDINGHAM in England and one child named Lydia was born before they sailed to South Africa. Their children were: Lydia, James (my Gt Grandfather) born 26 November 1846 at Sea, George, Sarah, Rachael and Charles. The story goes that my Great Grandfather James, was put in to a little shoe box when he was born at sea ! It seems my research is in England. Do any names ring a bell ? Many thanks Valda (Johannesburg South Africa)
Hi. Since very few have been posting, I will post my brick wall again. I need clues to prove that Henry Willis Sr. who was b 1795 and married Nancy LNU, was the father of John S. Willis b 1819 Monongahela VA (or Greene Co. PA due to the border disputes), William Willis b 1827 VA, Jeremiah Willis b 1824 (I have proof he is the son of Henry and Nancy Willis), and Daniel Willis b before 1819, and Henry Willis Jr b 1826. These families lived in Marshall Co. WV (VA), Washington Co., Meigs Co, and Monroe and Belmont Counties in OH. Some of them ended up in Wood Co. WV. John S. Willis m Julia Ann Mowder in Belmony Co. OH 1838. Died Civil War. Daniel Willis m Diana LNU and lived his life in Monroe Co. OH William m 1st (?), m 2nd Ann Matilda LNU, lived in Meigs Co. d Wood Co. WV Jeremiah Willis m Mary Willis (her maiden name also) lived Meigs Co. d Wood Co. WV. Henry Willis m Sarah A. LNU (Don't know where they went after Meigs Co. OH. I have tons of info on all these from John down to share. Any help on these families would be greatly appreciated. Martha Sargent

SCRIBNER, married a WILLIS in Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine, and at the time Melvina's father's estate was probated in 1876, the Willises were living in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon, My Willis line came from Carroll Co. Ky. Since yours went to Ky, I thought maybe we could be from the same line, or maybe you could find some info on my line. My grandfather was William Willis b. about 1872/73. His father was also named William Willis. His siblings were, Nannie (Willis) Carter, Humphrey Willis, Minnie (Willis) Brown, & another sister (don't know first name) was on obituary as Mrs. Albert Collins. His father William was supposed to have a half-sister, Tisha Barton. The younger Wiilliam Willis married my grandmother, Minnie (Wheeler) Willis, also from Carroll Co. Ky. I haven't been able to find anything else about my grandfather William or his father William. I don't even know who my grandfather's mother was. The info I have I got from the elder William's obituary. Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. We may even be kin, of course I don't know what part of Ky your line moved to. Thanks in advance. Pat
Found in the NY Daily News, Saturday Oct 16, 1954 - page 13 "A Cat, a Parrot and a Mr. Willis The most delightful current news story, we think, is that of William Willis. Willis is the 61 year old New Yorker who took off from Callao, Peru last June 22, aboard a raft made of balsa wood, with only a cat and a parrot as shipmates. His intention was to ride the Humboldt current to the South Seas, after the manner of Thor Heyerdahl and five pals seven years ago aboard the raft Kon-Tiki. Willis had a radio transmitter, but wasn't heard from till Wednesday of this week. Thursday, he turned up off Pago Pago, Samoa, looking fine. Yesterday, Willis tied up his raft at Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango, heavens knows why) and came ashore. He was in such good condition that he refused medical attention- after a prolonged diet of fish and rainwater. Willis had smashed the Heyerdahl record by making 6000 miles in 115 days as against the Scandinavian's 4300 in 102. It's an even more terrific story than the saga of the Kon-Tiki. To us, it has everything except sex appeal - adventure, man against the sea and the weather, American enterprise and courage, the grim ghastliness of being without human company for nearly four months, animal interest (how'd the cat get along with the parrot?), animal pathos (the cat finally ate the poor bird), and so on and so forth. Well (sic), be seeing you in books and movies, Mr. Willis, we hope, we hope. This real-life story has a lot of "escape" fiction beat a mile."
