This seems like a good time to post the info on my grandfather again. My grandfather was William WILLIS from Carrollton, Ky. I'm not sure where he was born, but I have the obituary of his father who was also called William WILLIS & it said his father was long time resident of Carrollton, Ky,so I assume my grandfather William (his son) was born in Carrollton, Ky. The obituary said the older William had 5 children. they were: William WILLIS (Carrollton, Ky) (my grandfather), Nannie (WILLIS) CARTER (Worthville,Ky), Humphrey WILLIS (Ohio), Minnie (WILLIS) BROWN (Prestonville, Ky), & Mrs. Albert (WILLIS) COLLINS (Carrollton, Ky),(no first name givin). My grandfather William married Minnie WHEELER from Carrollton, Ky (not to be confused with his sister Minnie). I think my grandfather William was born about 1872/73 & died about 1925, but these dates could be wrong. I know my mother was a young child when he died, so I never knew him. The older William WILLIS (my grandfather's father) had a half sister named Tisha BARTON according to the obituary. My grandfather William & grandmother Minnie had 5 daughters. They were: Muriel (WILLIS) FLOYD (my mother), Edith (WILLIS) WOODS, Flossie (WILLIS) BROCK, Wilhelmina (WILLIS) WILSON, & Rose (WILLIS) BAINBRIDGE. This is all the info I have on my grandfather William WILLIS & my g-grandfather William WILLIS. If anyone can relate to any of these names please e-mail me. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks Pat

Hi Chuck, I certainly wish I had more on my John Robert Willis, but the info I posted was what little I have. I do, of course, have lots down....but nothing up! He and his father were supposed to be born in Indiana; his mother in Missouri. I am trying to obtain a death certificate for him, but have not received it so far. HOPEFULLY it will contain some good information. If and when I receive it, I will post the info on the WILLIS site for all. Please hang onto my info, as I will yours. Good luck and I hope to hear back from you and others soon. Jane Evans In a message dated 03/24/2001 9:36:55 AM Central Standard Time, chuck@imagin.net writes: > Maybe we have a connection. I have found information on my James Wylie Willis that say's he was born in MO. The info came from the birth records of his youngest five children. If anyone has info that might help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Melissa in TX

Thought this might be of interest to a Willis researcher as it's on the marriage certificate of my grandmother's first marriage. She married GEORGE WILLIAM WILLIS, age 26, from Portage, Wisconsin, in 1897 in Vancouver, B.C. (so he was born around 1871 in Portage). He was a Mining Broker and was a son of G.W. WILLIS and ALICE TERESA NOLAN and his religion is listed as Catholic. They were married for fewer than 7 years.
Hi Carl & all WILLIS researchers, My Ggrandfather, John Robert Willis was born about 1851 in Indiana. His father was born in Indiana and mother in Missouri. I believe he was married about 1876, possibly in Dent County MO. He married Catherine "Kate" Holmes. They had 13 children, with only 5 living to adulthood. Two of his siblings were possibly George and Dick (Richard) Willis. John Robert died June 13 1940 in Shannon County MO. The surnames of Bedwell and Morgan are supposed to be in this Willis family. Would you, or any of you other "Willis searchers" have any infomation that might connect me to his parentage? Thank you for your help. Hi Willis researchers, Does any one have any information on a William Willis married (1) Jean (2) Elizabeth Rican? b in Maryland or North Carolina, William was married to Elizabeth in Guilford Co. NC in 1793, William died in Union Co. Indiana 1823, Children, Levin, Trustrum, William, Elizabeth, With Jean and Thomas, John, Robert, Sally with Elizabeth. I have Joseph F. Willis born in approx. 1871, died March 1950 Bellingham, Washington, married Lillian L. ???, 1892. They had two children, Robey John Willis, b. 7 May 1894, Newark, MO., died 15 February, 1963, Seattle, Washington, m. Florence Winifred KEMP, 29 December 1917. They had two boys, Jack Lewis WILLIS and Robert WILLIS, both born in Bellingham, Washington. The WILLIS family is not in the 1900 census for Whatcom County, Washington, but they are in the 1910 census, so I am assuming that they were still in MO. until sometime between those dates. Joseph was a contractor and lived on a small farm in Bellingham so he may have been a contractor and/or a farmer in MO. I have also heard that Robey was born in La Belle MO. If anyone knows anything about this family, especially that time in MO. I would much appreciate any info available. Thanks. Jan Kelley Bellevue Washington USA JanHellen@worldnet.att.net

I believe that these are 2 separate John Willises. I also believe that the group in the eastern part of NC that you are related to is not directly related to the Willis family that ended up in the western part of the state, as they have been traced back to Virginia. Lynn Wesson

John Willis was born circa 1759, in Robeson County, North Carolina, and died in April, 1802. He was the son of Daniel Willis and Elizabeth (Betsy) Moore. John Willis married, Asenath Barnes, in 1779 (she was born in 1763, NC; died 1806, Natchez, Ms). John Willis, helped emancipate, his first-cousin and my ancestor, Rev. Joseph Willis (see http://www.randywillis.org/) of Rapides Parish, Louisiana. John Willis became a member of the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1782, 1787, 1789 and 1791, a member of the Senate in 1794, and of the House of Representatives in 1795. In the same year that he helped obtain Joseph Willis' "legal freedom," 1787, he was appointed as one of a committee of five, from North Carolina, to ratify the Constitution of the United States. This was done just in time for North Carolina to enter the Union, as the twelfth state, and to assist in the election of Gen. George Washington as the first President. In 1795, Governor Samuel Ashe commissioned John Willis as a Brigadier General in the 4th Brigade of the Militia, Continental Army. The land that the county seat of Robeson County, Lumberton, North Carolina is located on was donated by him, from his Red Bluff Plantation. The area, in recent years, has become infamous as the location for the trial of the men responsible for the death of the father of basketball star Michael Jordon. A plaque of General John Willis stands there today. Gen. John Willis moved to Natchez, Mississippi, from North Carolina, in about 1800 and died soon thereafter, in 1802. He is buried behind the Natchez Cathedral. He also had a son named John (see children below). Another son, Thomas Willis, was almost Attorney General of Louisiana, he was a circuit judge in Mississippi and died in Copiah County, Ms. Children of Gen. John Willis: 1. Alice Willis 2. Sarah Cain Willis 3. Martha Willis, born 22 Dec 1780; died 1870. 4. Elizabeth Willis, born 1782; married in 1823 to William Patton. 5. John Willis, born 1784, died unknown; unmarried. 6.
