    2. Ruth Smith Graham Ruth contracted Typhoid and told her husband, Robert Graham (pictured here) she wished to be buried at the top of a hill on their homestead near Forest Hill between present-day Perkins Creek and Barber Creek. She died June 2, 1869, at age 55, and was the first to be buried on the hill known as the Graham Cemetery. Robert Graham is buried next to her. Four of their daughters married four of Rev. Daniel Hubbard Willis Sr.'s sons. He was Rev. Joseph Willis’s (1758-1854) eldest grandson and the first of his descendants to enter the ministry. Julia Ann Graham (1845-1936) married Daniel Hubbard Willis Jr. (1839-1900). Demerius Graham (1849-1886) married Calvin Willis (1855-1911). Annie Graham (1855-1936) married Robert Willis (1858-1939). Mary Ann "Maggie" Graham (1853-1940) married Dempsey Willis (1854-1919). Robert Graham and Ruth Smith Graham were Randy Willis's maternal great‐ great‐grandparents. Their daughter, Julian Ann Graham married Daniel Hubbard Willis Jr. They too are buried in the Graham Cemetery. They are Randy Willis’s great-grandparents. Daniel Hubbard Willis Jr. fought in many of the great battles of the Civil War, including Shiloh, Bull Run, Perryville, Murfreesboro, Missionary Ridge and Chickamauga. He was a great-grandson of pioneer Louisiana Baptist preacher, Rev. Joseph Willis. He was a rancher and Constable of Spring Hill, Rapides Parish (present-day Forest Hill). Julian Ann Graham married Daniel Hubbard Willis Jr. They also are buried in the Graham Cemetery. Their youngest son Randall Lee Willis was buried in the Graham Cemetery. He is Randy Willis’s namesake and grandfather. ***** Joseph Willis-He was born (1758‐1854) a Cherokee slave in Bladen County, North Carolina. He preached the first evangelical sermon west of the Mississippi River in 1798. He was born into slavery. His mother was Cherokee and his father a wealthy English plantation owner. His family took him to court to deprive him of his inheritance, which would have made him the wealthiest plantation owner in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1776. He fought as a patriot in the Revolutionary War under the most colorful of all the American generals, Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox. His first wife, Rachel Bradford Willis, died in childbirth, and his second wife died only six years later, leaving him with five young children. He crossed the mighty Mississippi River at Natchez at the peril of his own life, riding a mule! He entered hostile Spanish‐controlled Louisiana Territory when the dreaded Code Noir (Black Code) was in effect. It forbade any Protestant ministers who came into the territory from preaching. His life was threatened there because of the message he preached. His denomination refused to ordain him until 1812 because of his race. On November 13, 1812, Joseph Willis constituted Calvary Baptist Church at Bayou Chicot, Louisiana. He went on to plant more than twenty churches in Louisiana. On October 31, 1818, Joseph Willis founded the Louisiana Baptist Association at Beulah Baptist in Cheneyville, Louisiana. Joseph Willis founded all five charter member churches. After overcoming insurmountable obstacles, he blazed a trail for others for another half‐century that changed American history. Joseph Willis was Randy Willis’s 4th great-grandfather. 2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ben WILLIS which was taken at the G. F. Sterling Studio in West Bay City, MI. The photograph was likely taken in the 1880's with Ben appearing to be in his 20's at the time. In addition to his name someone has written "Father's Cousin" on the back of the photograph. I'm hoping to locate someone from Ben's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to his family. If you are a member of this family or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [WILLIS] Happy Mother's Day to Rev. Joseph Willis's mother Mary Willis (aka Ahyoka Willis in my novels).
    2. Happy Mother's Day to Rev. Joseph Willis's mother Mary Willis (aka Ahyoka Willis in my novels). Rev. Joseph Willis's (1758-1854) half-Cherokee mother's name was Mary Willis. Not Sarah Willis. How do I know that? That's what Joseph Willis wrote in his diary/journal. But, if you search there are clues everywhere! ✯Joseph Willis married his first wife Rachel Bradford in 1784. ✯Their first child, a son, Agerton Willis, was born in 1785. He was named after Joseph's English father Agerton Willis. ✯Their second child, a daughter, Mary Willis, was born in 1787. She was named after Joseph's half-Cherokee mother Mary Willis. To honor Joseph Willis's parents, Joseph Willis and Rachel Bradford Willis waited to the birth of their third and fourth children to name an offspring after themselves. ✯Joseph Willis and Rachel Bradford Willis's third child, Joseph Willis Jr. was born in South Carolina in 1792. ✯Joseph Willis and Rachel Bradford Willis’s fourth child Rachel Willis was born in 1794. ✯Rachel Willis dies in childbirth, in 1794. She was 32-years-old. ✯✯✯✯✯ Rev. Joseph Willis's eldest child Agerton Willis (named after his Grandfather) named his daughter Mary Willis to honor his half-Cherokee Grandmother Mary Willis. He has no daughters named Sarah Willis since Rachel Bradford Willis was his mother, not Sarah. In 1795 Joseph Willis married his second wife Sarah. She was an Irish woman. She dies too. Joseph Willis's third wife was also named Sarah. Joseph Willis and his third wife Sarah Willis's son William Willis (1804) named his first daughter after his mother Sarah Willis and his second daughter after his half-Cherokee Grandmother Mary Willis. Joseph Willis and his third wife Sarah Willis's son Lemuel Willis (1812) changes the order. He named his first child Mary Willis to honor his half-Cherokee Grandmother Mary Willis and his fourth child Sarah Willis. It gives you an idea of how much respect they had for their half-Cherokee Grandmother Mary Willis. And, that respect continued into the next generation. Joseph Willis Jr's son Joseph P. Willis (1824) named a daughter Mary Willis. Agerton Willis's daughter and a granddaughter of Rev. Joseph Willis, Eliza Willis did the same thing. She married John A. Strother. They named one of their daughter's Mary Ann Strother (1852). And, the list goes on... ✯✯✯✯✯ How did the named Sarah Willis get confused with Joseph Willis's half-Cherokee mother's real name Mary Willis? Rev. Joseph Willis's uncle (Joseph Willis's father Agerton Willis's brother) Benjamin Willis also had a son named Joseph Willis. This Joseph Willis was thus a first-cousin to Rev. Joseph Willis and as might be expected the records of the two have been often confused. This Joseph Willis was a few years younger (1763-1767) than Rev. Joseph Willis (born 1758). This Joseph Willis's (not Rev. Joseph Willis) mother was named Sarah. Sarah was married to Benjamin Willis, not Rev. Joseph Willis's father Agerton Willis as some have supposed. This Joseph Willis's (not Rev. Joseph Willis) sold to his mother, Sarah Willis, half of "Joseph Willis's sawmill." This Joseph Willis (the son of Benjamin Willis) died later the same year (1788), without issue. He is listed on the 1788 tax list as "Willis, Joseph Estate" with 530 acres, 2 black polls. Now to complicate things further, this Joseph Willis (the son of Benjamin Willis) also had a brother named Agerton Willis. This Agerton was also a first-cousin to Rev. Joseph Willis. Rev. Joseph Willis's uncle George Willis also had a son named Agerton Willis, thus we see Rev. Joseph Willis's father was named Agerton Willis and Rev. Joseph Willis also had two first-cousins named Agerton and one first cousin named Joseph. These three Agerton Willises and the two Joseph Willises are often confused with each other. ~ Randy Willis Website: http://threewindsblowing.com Amazon author's page: http://amazon.com/author/randywillis Three Winds Blowing trailer https://youtu.be/L6libzCS9No Twice a Slave trailer: https://youtu.be/IuPAzCcRn3s Twice a Slave, the play trailer: https://youtu.be/L7iT-7CiKA0

    1. [WILLIS] Help?
    2. I need someone to retype these two books...my plan is to republish both of them this year. The two most accurate books on Louisiana Baptist are John Pinckney Durham and John S. Ramond's "Baptist Builders in Louisiana" (Shreveport, Louisiana, Durham-Ramond, 1934) and Ivan M. Wise's "Footsteps of the Flock; Or Origins of Louisiana Baptists" (Crowley, Louisiana, L. Nussbaum, 1910). Dr. Ivan M. Wise (B.A., M.A., LL.D.) wrote the second most accurate account of Joseph Willis of all the early writers, although he has at least one mistake about Joseph-he states Joseph's place of birth as South Carolina-it was North Carolina. Wise was the ex-President of the Louisiana Baptist Society. He was born in 1854 (the year Joseph Willis died) and died in 1812, only two years after his book was published. John Pinckney Durham and John S. Ramond's wrote of Wise in "Baptist Builders in Louisiana" (Shreveport, Louisiana, Durham-Ramond, 1934, p. 49) that "He was a historian. He traveled and collected data for Paxton's "History of the Baptist of Louisiana," [1888 ]. "Later, he was the author of Footsteps of the Flock. He had written and published one volume of this Louisiana Baptist history, and was making rapid progress towards others when the work fell from dying grasp." He died on May 22, 1912. John Pinckney Durham and John S. Ramond's wrote the most accurate account of Joseph Willis. See the attached photo. 3. William Hunsucker Thomas b. 1810 and Nancy Willis b. 1812 in Yancey and Mitchell County North Carolina wed when they were both terribly young. They had their first child in 1828. Both were mixed blood Cherokee Indian and avoided the Trail of Tears. William was a wagoneer. He carried supplies to the community of settlers that migrated from North Carolina to Union County Georgia and was found on Georgia census in 1840 but back in North Carolina on the 1850 census. Family legend states that these families along with the Davenports and others had traveled between Georgia and North Carolina often and when the roundup for Removal came they had gone back to North Carolina. It was also said that they refused to migrate to Indian Territory and had basically lied to buy land in Georgia because they could pass for white. William 1810-1906 and Nancy 1812-1904 both lived out their lives in Union County Georgia and are buried at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church near the part of Lake Nottely known now as the Boy Scout Camp…. (sorry not politically correct). Their children were: Eliza Beth 1828-1891 m. Harden Sparks Martha 1834-1904 m. John Wesley Hensley Joseph Monroe 1836-1918 m. Naomi Adaline Hayes Catherine 1839-1895 m. John Hayes Syntha 1841-1923 m. Norman Isaacks and Edley F. Beaver John McDaniel 1843-1925 m. Elizabeth Willis and Roseanna McIntyre William Jasper 1847-1919 m. Charity Louisa Self Caroline Zelieus 1851-1927 m Garrett Elexander Adeline C. 1851-1942m m. David E. Davenport Willis Washington “Bud” 1853-1933 m. Mary A. McEntire and Emma E. Taylor After twenty years of actual on the ground running back and forth between North Carolina and Georgia have never been able to ascertain who Nancy’s parents were. Elizabeth Willis may have been a cousin… is listed as the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Reid Willis. There is a Martin Willis on the census records in Union County Georgia… haven’t been able to tie him in either. Most of these families are buried at either Mt. Zion Baptist or Mt. Olivet Baptist cemeteries in Blairsville Post Office. Leslie Barker Thomas GaTOTA, Past President Gilmer Hist. Soc., President
