    3. Hello listers! I am researching the family of Henry Williams of St. Ewe parish, Cornwall, UK. Henry's daughter Rebecca( b. 1847) was my great grandmother. Henry was a butcher in the small village of Polmassick, as were his father and grandfather. I've been to Polmassick and I took a picture of the house where they lived, generation after generation. Anyone out there descended from this family? Sher, Ontario, Canada

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ruth WILLIAMS of Ironwood, MI. The photograph was taken in the early 1900's with Ruth appearing to be in her teens or 20's. She is pictured with a friend and both are holding violins. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Ruth and her family: Ruth WILLIAMS was b. 1901-1903 in Wisconsin to parents William Pascoe WILLIAMS (1864-1948) and Emma Johanna POAD (1866-1938). Ruth had a brother Chester Henry WILLIAMS (1895-1982). Ruth married Harry BOND Jr. (1904-1970) and together they had two children, David Lee (1938-1975) and Emmajean (1939-1998). Ruth died in 1970. Census records provide the following details: 1910 census of Knight, WI: William P. WILLIAMS, age 48, married 16 years, born England, parents born England, to USA 1890, a Blacksmith in Iron Mines Emma WILLIAMS, wife, age 43, married 16 years, 5 children/2 living, born WI, parents born England/IL Chester WILLIAMS, son, age 15, born MI Ruth WILLIAMS, dau, age 8, born WI 1920 census of Ironwood, MI: William WILLIAMS, age 57, to USA 1872, born England, parents born England Emma WILLIAMS, wife, age 53, born WI, parents born England/IL Chester H. WILLIAMS, son, age 24, born MI, a Hospital Intern Ruth E. WILLIAMS, dau, age 18, born WI + 3 Lodgers I'm hoping to locate someone from this WILLIAMS Family so that the photograph can be returned to its rightful place, with family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. A belated Happy New Year to all WILLIAMS-UK Subscribers, The last few months have been somewhat erratic on the RootsWeb mailing lists. The upgrade that started without warning in July is still not complete. A number of functions are still not working correctly. The Archives of the lists appear to be working again, but there are a number of long gaps including much of the last couple of months. There isn't much hope that things will be fixed any time soon. The main mailing list programmer (and possibly the only person who knew how the RootsWeb mailing lists really worked,) Randy Winch, died suddenly, aged 54, at the beginning of December. However, the mailing lists are working and are still a valuable resource. If you posted something in the last few months that isn't in the archives, <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index?list=WILLIAMS-UK>, and might be of interest to others in the future then please feel free to repost it. The main reason for this message is to inform you that one of the functions that is not working is the redirection of the original mailing list address WILLIAMS-UK-L@rootsweb.com (with '-L' before the '@') to the new (since 2006) address WILLIAMS-UK@rootsweb.com. The messages sent to the -L form of the address do eventually get through to me (as List Admin,) but are mixed in with all the spam and therefore will be delayed. ******IMPORTANT******* Please make sure to use WILLIAMS-UK@rootsweb.com (without the '-L') when sending messages to the mailing list. ********************** And please change your address book for all RootsWeb mailing lists to remove any '-L's. <LISTNAME>@rootsweb.com. I would also like apologise for all delays and failures to deal with mailing list issues while I have been moving house. 3. Hello List: I'm going to take you all the way down to Cornwall for my WILLIAMS family.... St Ewe in Cornwall lies over near the south coast near Mevagissey. My folks lived in the small hamlet of Polmassick in that parish. My 3 x grandfather, Henry WILLIAMS was the butcher there, as was his father before him, and likely his grandfather, too. The house in which they lived and carried on their business still stands, and is still thatched! Imagine that! Henry was born in 1814, christened at St. Ewe parish church October 23 of that year, the son of John WILLIAMS and Jane Melhuish COCK. He married Mary Ann BICE. Their daughter Rebecca, eighth of twelve children, was my 2 x great grandmother, marrying here in Canada in 1881. I welcome contact with any /*cuzzins*/ that may be lurking on the list! 3. Greetings WILLIAMS-UK Subscribers, Having taken over as List Administrator of the WILLIAMS-UK mailing list, I would like to encourage you all to let the rest of know which WILLIAMSes you are looking for. The Mailing List has been very quiet for a number of years and subscribers will have come and gone. This is a good time to post an update on what you have found and what information you would like to find next. This will also help to identify any old e-mail addresses that are no longer valid and give us a better indication of how many subscribers there are on the Mailing List. My WILLIAMS tree starts with my 5G Grandfather: Stephen WILLIAMS who was born in about 1751 and married Sarah CITCHEN in Mundon, Essex. Their son: Francis WILLIAMS was born 1803 in Mundon, Essex and married Anne Maria VALENTINE. Their son: William WILLIAMS was born 1827 in Mundon, Essex and married Emma HOCKLEY. Their son: William WILLIAMS was born 1855 in Hatfield Peverel, Essex and married Matilda LITTLE. Their daughter: Matilda Grace WILLIAMS was born 1881 in Edmonton, Middlesex and married Claude OBLATH (my Great Grandparents) I would like to discover where Stephen WILLIAMS came from (it could be Mundon, but I haven't found any records before his marriage in 1784.) If anyone has any links to my WILLIAMSes please do let me know Cheers         Elmo. -- --Keith Elmo ELDRIDGE      WILLIAMS-UK-Admin@rootsweb.com --Elmo@aphelia.co.uk --Walkley, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. --List Administrator of the WILLIAMS-UK mailing list

    1. Re: [WILLIAMS-UK] Samuel Williams...b:1809
    2. Hoping for some help or anything.....Researching the WILLIAMS family of Wales. Hi Dave As you will be aware, Williams is (I think) the fourth most common surname in Canada, and the third most common in the UK. It is almost certainly the second most common in Wales. There are now almost a quarter of a million of us in the UK alone. There are therefore many thousands of "Williams" families in Wales, almost always unrelated to one another. Most Welsh surnames derive from patronymics, at the time when English naming practices were imposed on us by the English. This is because the traditional Welsh system was to give people a Christian name only and then append it with "son of" or "daughter of" and the parent's Christian name. Welsh people were able to recite their ancestry in this way through six generations, thus giving them a virtually unique identity. Thus in Welsh I would be "Allen ab Eiriog ap Samuel ap Joseph ap David/Dafydd" and so on (I can't get back any further yet) and not Allen Williams. The English could not cope with this system. What is certain is that in my ancestry there is a William somewhere in the chain who gave rise to the "Williams" English-system surname which has been carried on since. Therefore I would earnestly suggest that you try a geographic-based list to post your query, or direct your research on to the mining industry, to try to find the colliery concerned, and threfore the locality. The Rhymney Valley is traditionally the boundary between Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, so your man may be from either of those counties. Best wishes, Allen Williams Sale Cheshire Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
