The following new message has been added to the Group 32 board under the new topic of Match with another surname... -------------------------------- At Adrian's suggestion I increased my test results from 37 to 67 markers. At about the same time I received an email from a Bailey surname project member saving we were a 37/37 match. His was also increased to 67 and now we have a 67/67 match. I do not know the probability of a coincidental match of different surnames at that level but I assume it is small. His line only goes back to 1830 with confidence and the known families are never geographically close to that point in time. I am uncertain if he should be added to the group or if a posting like this is enough to raise the potential issue. Any thoughts?
A match is a match! No matter the surname. My thoughts are that a DNA data bank is designed to identify matches, groups and subgroups, etc. And as we all know, many (or most) surnames, especially those such as Williams, given its Welch background, or any of the ones ending in --son, --sen, etc. were more or less "given on the spot", not to mention the altered, shortened or new surnames given new arrivals in ports around the world. In addition to adoption from one given name to another one and "illegitimate" births, orphaned babies brought up under another surname, "lost babies" found during wars, etc., there are all sorts of other reasons as to why identical DNA matches could come from totally different surnames on different continents with no known historical or geological connections. My suggestion would be to include all matches and then to try to sort out the names or just be comfortable knowing that surnames are "cultural tags" and DNA matches are genetic tags and just wonder at the results. It's all such a humanizing endeavor anyway. We're all related, no matter the country, culture, ideology, race, or creed. Our DNA data banks at the National Geographic level point in that direction already. Other thoughts? It is theoretically possible to match with other families just because mutations are random. This is probably very rare unless you were a WAMH. If you were a WAMH, then you could match with literally a thousand others on 12 markers, and hundreds on 25 markers. This matching generally disappears with 37 or more markers. But, you would probably not be closely related to any WAMH unless you matched on 37 or 67 markers. If you have a match at 37 or more markers with a family with a different name, it may indicate a stepchild, orphan, or child out of wedlock in the past. -----Original Message----- From: williams-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:williams-dna-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of wwwuser@yourhostingaccount.com Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2007 10:23 AM To: williams-dna@rootsweb.com Subject: [WILLIAMS-DNA] From The Forums! - Match with another surname The following new message has been added to the Group 32 board under the new topic of Match with another surname... -------------------------------- At Adrian's suggestion I increased my test results from 37 to 67 markers.
