2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: Recruiting Participants in the UK/Wales... -------------------------------- This is an excellent question and a worthwhile effort, in my opinion. I think the solution is to "get local". What I mean by that is, the most active genealogy message servers and websites for the UK and Wales are at the County level. I subscribe to the Anglesey county (Wales) genealogy message service, for example. There are several messages there each week, with "Williams" frequently appearing. With a surname as common as Williams, there is no reason for me to subscribe to a Wales-wide message service. Therefore, I think a concise message to each Wales/UK county message board might get some new recruits. I already tried to drum up some interest in Williams DNA a few months back on the Anglesey board. Hard to know if we got any new members as a result. There were only a couple responses to my message. One person was concerned about discovering private family secrets such as illegitimate children. I responded that this would be good information to have!

    2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: How to get those in a group to communicate??... -------------------------------- Thomas, You bring up a very good point and a common concern for many folks. We should not have to worry about spambots (the programmatic robots that scour the internet and harvest email addresses) for one simple reason. The email address are all stored in a data base and the only way to get them out is to run the webpage itself, which then runs a small piece of programming to "select" that information from the database. The spambots cannot run the webpages...they can only look at existing html code and pull from that. And, they cannot read from a database. I hope this helps to quell anyone's fear about spam! It has long been a concern of mine and I make many efforts to protect everyone from it. - Adrian

The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: How to get those in a group to communicate??... -------------------------------- I am glad to see efforts to spur more communications between members and other researchers. One concern regarding email lists though, Adrian... You may want to consider ways to prevent spammers from getting this information. They use some sophisticated techniques to gather email addresses from anywhere on the internet. Some websites disguise email addresses as graphic files, rather than ASCI. Apparently this prevents spyware and other tools from automatically gathering email addresses. For an example of this, go to Rootsweb, select any surname forum, click on a message submitter's name, and look at their email address. I hope that's helpful :)

    3. I don't have any problem having you post my email address, but I suggest that they put Williams DNA in their address line. I have my spamblocker set to high and if I don't recognize the name or the subject they automatically get deleted. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that does this, so a little precaution can save time. As far as name and address being listed, as long as it is for members only, I don't have a problem. I would not like to have it open to the general public. Ideas for getting Welsh volunteers: Have you considered contacting the County Archivists? I've found some of them to be very responsive. Maybe they could suggest ways of advertising the project. They might have bulletin boards whey they could post a flyer. Also there are county sites where you could post information about our project. Does Family Tree take British pounds? There would have to be an easy way for them to pay for it and we should know what the test costs in pounds before we try to recruit. Lynda

    3. Yeah, I have actually posted in the past to the Williams-UK mailing list, and am a subscriber...but that list is usually VERY quiet...not much traffic on it and never received any responses to my inquiries. Catherine Cooper has put some feelers out to some UK contacts and I had an idea about publishing an article or two with the Welsh/UK Genealogy periodicals/societies. So, we'll see where this goes..... - Adrian Doris E. 2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: How to get those in a group to communicate??... -------------------------------- Lynda and Gerri, You bring up an excellent point. Part of the whole reason to participate in the testing is to make contact with other folks who descend from the same ancestry as yourself, in hopes of fleshing out your genealogies. To take the test and then remain silent is both confusing and a waste of money! In the process of getting the project tracking spreadsheet I use converted to a database, I am having to rewrite the results pages. At one point, i put the question out there about publicising everyones email address...and the overwhelming response was "yes". So, in the next iteration of the results pages, I am going to make each persons kit number link to their email address. This way, every person has a way to be contacted about their kit. Another idea I have that would require A LOT of feedback from EVERYONE is to put together a contact sheet for the participants, which would have address and phone numbers of all the project participants, and make that available to y'all. I am thinking that this would help provide more avenues of communication. Finally, I have started creating new Forum boards just for the matched groups to have a place to converse. I put them in the forums because there are a large number of folks who are not project participants who are VERY interested in the families involved with the testing and the group conversations being public may also help spurn conversation. Just to give you an idea of how many people are here, the Forums averages about 4,000 hits each month. How many of those are cousins? Thoughts? - Adrian

The following new message has been added to the Williams DNA Project board under the new topic of Recruiting Participants in the UK/Wales... -------------------------------- Y'all, I have been stymied for some time now with a major challenge our project has: recruiting participants from Wales/UK. Considering that probably at least 90% of our ancestors originated in Wales/UK, it only seems smart to try to get UK participation in the project. And, considering that at one point, Williams was THE most common surname in Wales/UK, one would think it would be easy to get participants. Trick is how? Being smack dab in the middle of the US, with little contact with anyone across the pond, I am stumped on how to encourage participation from over there. So, I ask all of you.....what can we do with this? - Adrian

The following new message has been added to the Williams DNA Project board under the new topic of The Marriage of the Forums and the WILLIAMS-DNA Mailing List!!... -------------------------------- Y'all, Boy, sometimes I think I know how Dr. Frankenstein felt......I've received a lot of positive feedback about setting the site up so that anytime a message is posted on these Forums, it is duplicated to the mailing list. And the message y'all are sending me is clear...MAKE IT SO!! So, I have played with the program code for the Forums, added some extra stuff and think that I now have it working!! As many of you noticed late this evening when a flurry of funky looking messages came your way, I had a couple of bugs to work out!! However, it is working now!! A couple of items....one: watch out what you ask for....this will increase the amount of email you receive from the mailing list. two: you cannot reply back to the Forums...there really isn't much of any way for me to set that one up. If you see a message you are interested in, you will have to answer it in the forums. If anyone notices any problems with this, be sure to let me know! - Adrian

What y'all saw was the result of a conflict from an html based message being plugged thru a text-only engine...so instead of seeing what you're supposed to, you got all the html codes behind the special characters. So, I have added another little piece of code to try to remedy this....but the only way for me to test it is to keep trying this list...my own email translates the codes so sending it to myself instead of the list doesn't help!!
