    2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: Internet Explorer Problem (IE7)... -------------------------------- I also installed IE7 on one of my computers, and I have noticed some minor display issues on certain websites, such as Ancestry. However, the pages were still readable. You asked about the Tabs feature, and it does work. The Tabs seem to be about the same as opening a new window in IE6. One thing I don't like about IE7 is that the Edit menu, etc. are gone. Instead these features are shown as icons on the right side of the window. Since we learn to read left to right, my initial instinct is to look to the left of the window for these features. I prefer IE6 simply because I am accustomed to it but am giving IE7 a trial run.

The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy Forums, on the Williams DNA Project board under the existing topic of Re: Internet Explorer Problem (IE7)... -------------------------------- Hi there! Actually the only thing that is really messed up in IE7 are the results tables, for both the matched and no match groups. These tables are made up of a complex chunk of CSS code. Earlier versions of IE are known to not handle CSS very well and for years, programmers have been forced to write "workarounds" so that CSS would work correctly in IE browsers. Well, Microsoft, in IE7, has fixed some of these errors....which now negate some of the workarounds....which means that now we have to add even more code just to handle IE7 compatibility. And, I just simply haven't had the time yet to address the problem. All of the other pages should work normally in IE7 (including tabbed pages) but I haven't checked...personally, I uninstalled IE7 and went back to IE6 because I was happier with it. In the end, my primary browser is Firefox. - Adrian

Of course my reason for being here is because I am a Williams. I'll surf around the Site and see where what is before I start posting all about my branch. For now, I descend down from Shedrick Williams (wife Medica) via Greenup County, Kentucky.

The following new message has been added to the Williams DNA Project board under the new topic of Internet Explorer Problem (IE7)... -------------------------------- :'( All: I have just installed Microsoft Internet Exploer version 7 and Microsoft, in their "wisdom" has changed a function that allowed the DNA results page to display properly. Adrian is fully aware of this problem and will address it. In the meantime I recommend that you DO NOT install IE7, even though Microsof sends you messages that you should. Adrian will let us know when the function will work. By the way IE7 did not bring me any great improvements.  This same word of caution should apply to Vista as well. Rea

    3. Thanks so much for the update on the news, Adrian! Congratulations on your new software; that's terrific for you, and sure to help many others! The news on the DNA front was exciting to read about. We've made such progress in the last few years in the DNA world, but it's obvious that much more is coming down the pike, and I find that exciting! As one of those Williams whose 'matches' on FTDNA include almost exclusively different surnames, I'm interested in seeing refinements to the process. While I fully realize that the DNA 'match' is only the beginning and must be followed up with paperwork and genealogy research, I'm looking forward to a time when there is less ambiguity to it all. Yes, I know, I want it to be easy.....as a Williams it's been a hard row to hoe! lol! The following new message has been added to the Williams DNA Project board under the new topic of Latest News From Adrian - Lots Going On - Conference Details... -------------------------------- Y'all, Hello there! Remember me?! I know that I have been pretty quiet lately and that it seems like I have disappeared from the project. Well, that isn't the case! I have had a mountain of things going on over the last few weeks that have simply kept me swamped. So, I figured I would take a few minutes to cover all of the things that have been going on. If you have been following the project closely, you'll notice that we are now up to 340 participant....and still growing. And, although I haven't been announcing the changes, we continue to receive a number of results nearly weekly. Thanks to the project admin tool that I have written, I am able to make the changes immediately to the website and you should be able to see those results! For those of you who weren't aware, the 3rd Conference on Genetic Genealogy was last weekend and it was a truly exciting time for me. I was able to meet a couple of our project regulars like Emily Alucino and Mary Souder. At the conference, I gave two different well-received presentations to my fellow administrators and at the same time came home with a number of pieces of information. There are two major chunks of information that I need to pass along. The first is fairly easy.....from now on, whenever the lab cannot clearly determine someone's haplogroup based on their 12-marker test numbers, then FTDNA will automatically perform a SNP test to confirm the haplo. The question was asked about going back and doing SNP tests on prior participants they couldn't initially determine, and replied that they don't know yet. The second chunk of information is much more complex and very difficult to explain, yet it affects probably 60-70% of all participants. The scientific name of the issue is Recombinational Loss of Heterozygosity (recLOH for short). I am working on putting together a layman's terms explanation of this and will post it soon. In a nutshell, all of the multiple markers (those with letters such as 385a&b, 459a&b, 464a,b,c,d,etc) are impacted by this. This markers are called Palindromic markers. What happens is the in the course of our evolution and ancestry, every now and then, the body sends out a protein (enzyme?) that "repairs" these multi-markers. Again, this is a tough thing to explain. If you are interested, take a look at the results page and look at my group (Group 7). If you'll notice, at 385a&b, I have an 11-11 while everyone else in the group has an 11-14. For the last few years, we have thought that this represented a 3-step mismatch between myself and the rest of the group. Well, thanks to the latest scientific information, we now know that this marker set has been "repaired". Our ancestor originally had the 11-14 setup but at some point in my lineage only, the DNA was repaired and the mutations were removed...cleaning up the marker and changing it to an 11-11, but in just one step. So, instead of this being a 3-step mismatch...it is only 1. Now, apply this same concept to the rest of the lettered markers. And, it actually gets even more messy. mismatches due to recLOH on the 459 and CDY markers are now counted together. This completely changes the dynamic of how mismatches are calculated on these markers. What does this mean for you? Well, I have now have to go back and review all of the matching and non-matching information to see if this new information creates more matches. Specifically, we can very possibly expect to see some of the folks in the non-match groups, now actually match because I have to count the mismatches differently now. I will post more clear information about this later....again, it is a difficult item to explain in a posting! Another great thing with the conference was the chance for a group of us to get together to have dinner. Hughes Williams, Robert J. Williams (no match) and grandsons Alex and Robert (I believe?), Robert Williams and son Robert (Group 51), Bill and Stephanie Williams (Group 2) and myself met up at the Cheesecake factory for a very nice evening (I think I got everyone's names right!?!?). And, Robert J. actually flew down from Amarillo just for the meeting! I was truly honored that everyone would make the effort just to get together! Thanks!!! You will notice a new row for each group in the matched groups table called Modal Haplotype. This is basically, the most likely DNA pattern which that group's ancestor most probably had. In other words, this is the ancestral result set. It is determined from the most common numbers for each DYS value. And, keep in mind that it is group specific...so each group will have a different Modal since they each descend from a different ancestor. I will be making some time over the next couple of weeks to get these Haplotypes put in. I think once you see them, it will make more sense. And, there is some big news on my own homefront. One of the biggest reasons I haven't been very active lately is because I have been working hard on some brand new genetic genealogy software. It is literally a project management toolkit for DNA project administrators. We admins do not have any software to help us keep track of the ever growing amount of project related information and so I decided to write one. I unveiled it at the conference and it has been getting rave reviews. I have a self-imposed deadline of the end of the year to have version 1 finished and ready for sale, and in order for me to hit that, I have to keep my head buried in the program code. So far, it hasn't interfered with my Williams admin duties but I am constantly keeping that in mind. Hopefully, once I get the software released, I can get more active in the project again. I actually have even more stuff to talk about, but I will save that for later...this posting has grown much larger than I thought it would!! And, I have gotten the really important items out (I think!). Until later, Adrian ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WILLIAMS-DNA-request@rootsweb.com<mailto:WILLIAMS-DNA-request@rootsweb.com> with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Adrian: Thank you again for all your hard work. You are unbelieveable - everything you can do and do! I would have loved to have been in Houston, but was not able to. The new information maybe will show connections to those that we just knew must fit somehow, but couldn't find the link. Maybe not, but it is exciting. Thank you again for everything you do! 2. Until later, Adrian

    2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy board under the new topic of Thomas Dyer Williams of La Grange, Illinois... -------------------------------- For a number of years I have been trying to discover as much as I can about the above, who was the elder brother of my great-grandfather. He was born in Bristol, England on 31 August 1849 and emigrated to the United States in about 1870. After ten years in Philadelphia he went to Chicago, marrying Mary Alice Brown there on 10 January 1883. The first child (Alice Cary Williams) was born in Spring Park, Illinois on 18 December 1884, and according to US Census records the other five children were born back here in England and were naturalised afterwards. They were Grace W. Williams (b. August 1886), Clara B. Williams (b. August 1888), Ada Williams (b. March 1890), Gladys V. Williams (b. January 1896) and Thomas P. Williams (b. January 1898). Does someone have any of them in the family tree, please? Best wishes, Andrew Williams from Bristol

    3. I so appreciate this message, as it is essential that we know whether a researcher has the benefit of DNA. I am finally, after 15 years beginning to have significant success with my Williams family. Elimination of some Williams' is essential; and, DNA is "the" proof positive. 2. The following new message has been added to the Williams Genealogy board under the new topic of John Williams (abt1720-1793) wife: Mourning... -------------------------------- Here is one more "John Williams" to add to the list. He is my 4xggrandfather. This John Williams was born abt 1720, probably in Isle of Wight, Va. He married Mourning (NLN). She was born abt 1725 and died abt 1805. John and Mourning died in Edgecombe Co., NC. I believe that John had two brothers, Arthur and Roger, but not confirmed. I do not know anything about his parents nor other siblings. ANY information I can get will be greatly appreciated! John and Mourning settled on Town Creek in Edgecombe Co., NC in the 1750's. According to estate papers filed in Edgecombe Co. when his will was probated in 1793, they owned close to 2,000 acres of plantation land. The following can be found in a book entitled "Edgecombe Co. Court Minutes (partial) 1784-1800": "August, 1793: LWT of John WILLIAMS, dec'd, was exhibited for probate, but there being no subscribing witnesses thereto, Hardy FLOWERS, Benjamin LANCASTER, Absalom WILLIAMS made oath that the whole of the said will is in the handwriting of the Testator and Drury (sic) WILLIAMS also made oath that the said will was found locked up in a chest of the said dec'd among his valuable papers. The said will is there upon admitted to probate and ordered to be recorded, and John WILLIAMS, one of the executors therein named came into court & qualified thereto & took out letters. Morning (sic) WILLIAMS dissents to the LWT of her late husband, John WILLIAMS." TRANSCRIPT: PETITION DATED NOVEMBER 1793, EDGECOMBE CO., N.C. (942) Petition (November 1793) for dower and yar's provisions by the widow Morning (sic) Williams stating he died "August last" possessed of 1786 acres in two tracts on Town Creek, as follows: (1) adjoining George Gardner, dec'd, Martin Gardner, Harty Flo9weres (sic) and Benjamin Williford, and (2) adjoining Hardy Floweres, Hardy Todd and Barnaby Barrow. Record indicates the dec'd left a will to which the widow entered her dissent. Petition (July 24, 1794) for dower by the widow, Mourning Williams, stating the dec'd died possessed of 812 3/4 acres on north side of Town Creek, and stating the dec'd had bequeathed a horse to his son Benjamin Williams, sheep to his daughter Mary, wife of Robert Lancaster, a negro to his daughter Elizabeth and Cows to his daughter Lucy, now wife of John Bell. Dower allotted (July 21, 1795), consisting of 49 1/3 acres adjoining Bradly, Town Creek, the Rooty Branch and Hob Pen Branch, and mentions the widow's part of land willed to Elizabeth Williams, wife of John Batts, "called the Proctor Tract". Dower ordered (Nov. 6, 1795), except for lands claimed by the heirs of Jesse Williams, dec'd. Dowers allotted (Dec 0, 1795) to be drawn from 294 acres on Town Creek." The following information regarding Mourning is "hearsay" only. I read this on another web site and was unable to contact the person who posted it in order to confirm it: "Mourning (--?--) was born abt 1730 in Upper Town Creek, Edgecombe Co., North Carolina, and died AFT 1793 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina. She was the daughter of (unknown) and Summer Moon. She married John Williams, Sr., son of )?) Williams and Margaret or Elizabeth. He was born ABT 1730 in Upper Town Creek, Edgecombe Co., North Carolina and died ABT 1793 in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina." I am 99% sure that neither Mourning nor John were born in Edgecombe County, so there is serious doubt about the validity of the rest of that statement. Children of John and Mourning were: i. Drewry b. 1753, Edgecombe Co., d. May 17, 1831, Edgecombe Co. m. Elizabeth (NLN) ii. Jesse b. abt 1759 m. Elizabeth (NLN) iii. Mary b. abt 1764 m. Robert W. Lancaster iv. Benjamin b. abt 1766 d. July 29, 1811, m. Mary (NLN) v. Milbrey vi. Lucy b. 1770, d 1837, m. John Bell vii. John b. 1772, d Oct 15, 1817 m. Phereby Murphree viii. Elizabeth b 1773 d April 12, 1859 m. Jeremiah Batts ix. Nancy b. abt 1776
