    2. Hi Adrian, No, I haven't gotten in touch with Richard. I've so basking in my good fortune having found a match so soon that haven't tried to make contact yet. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me. Also, I have FTM Version 7, and I didn't see any instuctions about Gedcom files, but maybe I just overlooked something. 3. Trent, Hello there! It used to be almost standard for folks to spend a bit of time in the no match group, but now, because of the number of participants, that is slowly becoming the exception! Have you been in touch with Richard yet about the match. If not, I can put you in touch. Thanks so much for the input...I agree. I have thought about putting the steps out on how to create a GED from the main genealogy programs, but will have to get help from folks because FTM is what I use...I am not familiar with all the rest. Hopefully, here soon, we can get this all put together. 1. Re: [Williams-DNA] Frustration
    2. Adrian Williams
    3. Folks, There is a minor challenge that you will have to bear with me on regarding the TNG module. If you have not previously posted your pedigree information on the site, you will have to send me a bit of information in order for me to setup your account. Here is why. Because there are literally hundreds of trees in our project, I am using your kit number and the name, birth date (ca is ok!) and birth place of your earliest known ancestor to keep everyone's trees unique in the system. I have just finished going thru the matched groups and created trees for all of the pedigrees that I have (at least in front of me...I may have a couple more in the mess I keep in my system). When you sign-up for an account, check the results page and look to see if I have a pedigree posted for your kit. If there is one posted, no problems...I will already have the information I need. If it isn't posted..... Please don't shoot me! I will need a quick email with that information in it. I realize that a few of you have sent this information in the past, and I apologize for being scatter-brained and losing track of it in my mess...this is simply another good reason to use the module...you can take care of it yourself and not have to wait on me!! And, if you browse all trees, you will see that most of the trees have a description attached to them, giving some details about the family. These are VERY important because this is probably the first place lurkers and non-participants are going to look for information and whatever you put there is what they will see. And again, for now, you will have to email your descriptions to me and I will add them to your tree. I am working on making this to where you can do it yourself, but it might take a bit of time because I will have to re-code part of the software to make it happen...gotta love open source!! Anyway, I really appreciate your patience with me...I sincerely appreciate it! As always, Adrian Rea Williams wrote: > Dorothy, > > Try making an entry in the box for forgotten e-mail addresses. 3. I really appreciate the advice on producing a GEDCOM but alas that is not my problem. I already have my Williams' in that format. The problem is I can't log in to send it. When I requested a reminder it gave the same username and password that I am using. Yes Yes Adrian is doing a very good job with the site but he emailed me and a few others a while back as to why I wasn't taking advantage of the site. Unfortunately the reason is I can't log in. 3. Dorothy, I can appreciate your frustration with something that does not work "quite right" or the way you expect it to. 3. Hi Gayle, Paul's instructions were really well done for carving out a Gedcom from Family Tree Maker. I did end up, after two submissions that Adrian kindly deleted for me, setting up a new file, as you mentioned. The safety of that is that after you have copied the folks into it from your main file, you can look through it from one end to another and determine if you need to delete a person, or line. Also, you can continue to copy folks into it. Once you are satisfied with the results, then, using Paul's instructions, make a Gedcom from the entire file. You can upload it with full confidence. I think mine has 75 people in it, down from 6,000+ on my first try. Good luck! 3. I am sure for those that are experienced with creating a GEDCOM it is probably a no brainer to do so. Somehow I feel much better knowing that others are having problems with the process. My husband and I spent all of Sun.a.m. working on setting up a GEDCOM. The instructions that Adrian posted are excellent. Creating the GEDCOM wasn't difficult. The problem we encountered was trying to exclude the notes and trying to include only Williams descendants since we have lines other than Williams. We followed the directions to exclude the notes exactly. When we submitted the file their were 6,000 names and the notes were included. After an hour of sheer panic, I emailed the list for help. Adrian removed the file. This was our second attempt at creating a GEDCOM, both times with the same results. I am in the process of creating a new file with only Williams descendants and no notes and will create a GEDCOM from that file. The only problem then will be having the confidence to submit the file. 3. Following are instructions for creating a GEDCOM file using Family Tree Maker. Be sure to write down the location where you save the file so you can find it when you get ready to attach and send it! Paul Exporting GEDCOM files from Family Tree Maker To export your Family File to GEDCOM: 1. From the File menu, select Export File. 2. From the fly-out menu, select from Entire File, Selected Individuals, Copy/Export Individuals. 3. Click the Save as type drop-down list and select GEDCOM (*.GED). 4. In the File name field, type a name for the GEDCOM file. It must have the extension .GED. 5. In the Save in fields, select the drive and folder where you want to place your file. 6. Click Save. Family Tree Maker displays the Export to GEDCOM dialog box. 7. Make the appropriate File Type selections as described below: Destination- Use this to allow Family Tree Maker to check for special requirements of the program that will use the GEDCOM file. The table below will help you make a selection. FTW offers the most complete export features; select it if you plan to later re-import the file into Family Tree Maker for Windows. If the program you are exporting to is not listed, choose FTM. Select this To create this type of file FTM Family Tree Maker for DOS FTW Family Tree Maker for Windows TempleReady Temple submission to LDS Church PAF Personal Ancestral File, 3.0 or later ROOTS Roots II, Roots III, Roots IV, Roots V, Visual Roots When you choose a Destination, Family Tree Maker automatically chooses GEDCOM and Character set options. However, if Family Tree Maker's suggestions are incorrect for your purposes, make your own selections. Whenever possible, choose Version 5.5 in the "GEDCOM" field; it offers the best export format. If you don't know which file type to use, choose Version 4. Indent records - Check this to make the file more readable in a word processor. Some programs cannot read indented records, in which case this setting will be ignored. Abbreviated tags - Check this to use abbreviations for the GEDCOM tags, instead of full names. 8. Click OK. Family Tree Maker creates the GEDCOM file.
