Lorraine, > > do you know any more about Cherokee Williams? His birthdate, etc? Thanks. > Rosie ++++++++++++++++++++ Rosie; I have John W. "Cherokee" Williams birth as abt 1789 in Tennessee. One of his siblings has his birth recorded in Weakley Co., Tennessee, so that may be a good place to start. "Cherokee" was married to Rebecca Unknown in 1808. His death was in 11 Jul 1835 at Techuacana Springs, Texas. The following is excerpts regarding his parents and siblings sent to me by other researchers: "Thomas and (Mary) Priscilla Williams were in Louisiana Territory, just north of the Arkansas River near present Morrilton, by 1810. They and their six children were there by 1819, the year they sold their last preemption rights to the land and headed for Texas. Thomas and Priscilla Williams moved west of the Mississippi River in 1810 (according to one article). They were in Red River Co. by 1819. They were in Nacogdoches Municipality by about 1822. (one account says that they were there before 10-16-1821). They settled on the Angelina River in 1822 in what became Rusk County. He and his sons Brooks, Leonard, and William all received Texas land grants from the Mexican government by 1835. The Williams Settlement, enumerated by son-in-law William Elliott in 1835, was on Thomas's land. Thomas enlisted and served with Peter Ellis Bean (thought by some to be a relative) in the Fredonian Rebellion for the purpose of casting out the "out-laws" who readily ignored the benificance of the government in 1826. Brooks and William were Rangers for a time, and Leonard, a personal friend of Sam Houston, served as Indian Agent under him." "The Thomas Williams family settled in Hempstead Co., Arkansas where it is probable their son, William, met his wife-to-be Cinderella, possibly a Shaw or a Bean." "July 1997: Stockman Family Newsletter, Vol 3 #4 1988, pgs 62-66: Thomas Williams possibly from TN & Priscilla whose maiden name was possibly Brooks; the Brooks may have come from SC. Thomas was granted land in Mexican Texas in 1826 & his sons were not far behind: William, Leonard, Brooks, John A & 2 girls Mary Polly &?. The family had been in the unknown area which was between Ark & Spanish Tx. They lived beside Sam Houston in Tn prior to his fame. The family spent some time in Ark living alongside the Cherokee Indians, where Leonard & William married Nancy & Mary Isaacs." Now the latter, is possibly suggesting that the Isaac sisters are Cherokee. Just a guess. ---Lorraine
