His date of birth was stated as the 7 Sep 1886, which may suggest that his birth was never registered or was not correct! It appears that he may have added a few years to his birth to make him appear as if he was 18 years old and able to join the Army. Not an uncomon event in those days. On his records, it says that he was a drummer which actually means he played drum and bugle or flute (fife) and bugle, or possibly all three, serving with the 2nd & 3rd battalions and the Depot, a central training unit. The 3rd battalion was a reserve battalion and remained in Warley for the entire time of the War. His discharge, 6 Jul 1916, came about through sickness, being 'no longer physically fit for war service' under King's Regulations paragraph 392 (xvi). He received the Silver War Badge, a silver lapel badge worn on civilian clothes by invalided ex-servicemen. George Henry Williams was a House Decorator on 2 Aug 1937.
