    1. Re: [WILLIAMS] Williams of Warren Co., NC
    2. Deloris Williams
    3. Ellen, I haven't seen anything else on another PHILIP WILLIAMS. However, I may be able to help you with the others. First, I'm giving you a link to a map of Granville in 1779 which may be able to help you. I am wondering if you may have meant the Little River, not Little Creek, because there is an area in the then lower portion of Granville/Edgecombe Co.line which shows the Little River >>Tar River area. There is also at the top of the page, just above the Orange Co. area, right on the line of the Dan River, a small area that says Little Cr.; while the very uppermost tip of the Tar River extends just past the "Court House" under the Granville County sign. This 2nd area seems to cross too many rivers & creeks between them for that to be the right location, but it is the only place where the Little Creek was actually around Granville. But, if you look at that same area in 1746 (the 2nd link below) where the Little Creek would be which goes beyond the map to the left past the Hyco River (called the Hycotee River in 1779) you'll notice that it was in what would become Caswell Co. You will see the importance of that as you read the details of the information I have below since many of these families ended up in living in Caswell & Person Counties, probably having a lot to do with the formation of the counties over the years.. There was also another area called Little Creek on the Mecklenburg/Anson Co. border, but I would think that's out of the question. http://ncnatural.com/maps/1779n4.jpg http://www.gcgs.org/Documents/Map.htm From " History and Genealogies of Old Granville County,North Carolina, 1746-1800" by Thomas McAdory Owen, the only HAISLIP mentioned was a Marriage License Bond: LABAN HAISLIP to ELLEANOR WILLIAMS. Bond dated: Feby 23, 1779. Signed by Laban HAISLIP & Stephen JETT. Wit: Winifred W. JETT. Perhaps Nancy's parents? Also from the same book: Will Abstracts DANIEL WILLIAMS, of Gr. Co. Will, dat. Nov. Wife URSULA; and "my seven children MARYA GOODMAN, HENRY WILLIAMS, JOHN WILLIAMS, JAMES WILLIAMS, JOSEPH WILLIAMS, MARY MITCHELL & DANIEL WILLIAMS"; refers to son-in-law BENJAMIN GOODMAN. Gr. Co. Rec. 1760-62, p. 53 (by the way, Daniel's wife was Ursula Henderson the daughter of Thomas Henderson & probably Ursula Keeling. Daniel was said to be the son of John Williams & Mary Keeling, who had a plantation on Queens Creek in York Co,VA) Another abstract, same book, which also may pertain to yours, probably an earlier ancestor: WILLIAM WILLIAMS of Gr. Co., Will , dat. April 3, 1763, prob. Feby. Ct 1765. To son CHARLES 250 A. of tests. lands on South side of Tarr river; (2) to son STEPHEN "the plantation whereon I now live:, with 143 A. on North side of Tarr river; (3) to his daut. Exs: son CHARLES and friend FRANCIS FOWLER. Wit: JOHN WILLIAMS JOHN MORRIS. Id.p.77. ============================= Now, these particular WILLIAMS families did have members that moved to Tennessee. From another book "Colonial Granville County and Its People, The Lost Tribes of North Carolina", by Worth S. Ray (originally published 1945, Austin, Texas, by Souther Book Co; reissued 1979, and reprinted 2002 by Genealogical Publishing Co.Inc.) it states the following: Pg. 238 - JOSEPH WILLIAMS, This paragraph and the data that follows has reference to the JOSEPH WILLIAMS, son of NATHANIEL WILLIAMS. He may be indentified more particularly as the "Shallow Ford" JOSEPH WILLIAMS, who was the ancestor of the WILLIAMS FAMILY OF TENNESSEE, particularly those who settled and lived at Knoxville. From what is known as the "Logan Manuscript", published in Vol. III of the Joseph Habersham Chapter D.A.R. of Georgia, page 111 appears the following note, which refers to this particular JOSEPH WILLIAMS. MAJ. JOSEPH WILLIAMS, a cousin of COL. JAMES WILLIAMS, killed at King's Mountain, was the youngest son of NATHANIEL WILLIAMS, who emigrated from Wales (sic) to Hanover County, VA. JOSEPH lost his father when he was 15 years old, and was taken care of by a namesake, and kinsman, JOSEPH WILLIAMS, a merchant of Williamsboro, Granville County,N.C. JOSEPH WILLIAMS settled at the Shallow Ford of the Yadkin before the Revolution, and died in August, 1827, his widow surviving until 1832. The following is a letter from his son ALEXANDER WILLIAMS, of Greenville, Tennessee, written June 28, 1845, this being the postscript: "I expect I received a letter from the same gentleman you speak of, from Baltimore, Mr. LYMAN C. DRAPER, who wishes to know something of my father, and particularly as to the battle between the Whigs and Tories fought near Shallow Ford of the Yadkin, at which battle my father headed and commanded the Whigs. It is a little singular, histor has never named this battle, although nearly 100 Tories were killed and only one Whig lost his life. A.W." From the postscript of the above letter it will be observed that MAJOR JOSEPH WILLIAMS(son of NATHANIEL) was partly, if not mostly, raised at Williamsboro in Granville County, N.C. by his cousin a JOSEPH WILLIAMS. This JOSEPH WILLIAMS (the cousin) was the son of DANIEL WILLAMS and his wife URSULA HENDERSON. This store at Williamsboro (then called Nutbush) was for a time known as the WILLIAMS & BURTON store, the BURTON being either COL. ROBERT BURTON, son in law of JUDGE JOHN WILLIAMS, or his father HUTCHINS BURTON. This information discloses therefore that there were two JOSEPH WILLIAMS, prominent merchants in this section of North Carolina; the JOSEPH, of Granvillle (now Vance) at Nutbush or Williamsboro, and the MAJ. JOSEPH WILLIAMS, merchant at the Shallow Ford, on the Yadkin. ================================ Now the above starts establishing some of the names & people who were associated with each other and that they were related while also taking note of the same naming pattern in the family you are looking for, and the fact that they lived in Granville, and some moved on to Tennessee. The following is a possibility for who your William Williams may have been. From the same book by Worth S. Ray. Before I do, though, it has been said in recent years that some of the conclusions that Mr. Ray reached in his book are incorrect, mostly because he didn't have the modern conveniences we have now and may not have had access to as many records as are now available. But while some his conclusions may be wrong, many of the facts he based his conclusions on are in the book, so that researchers now can judge for themselves and come to their own conclusions using his same resources: [Notes in square [ ] brackets are mine. DW] Pg.235- (1)JOHN WILLIAMS (who married MARY KEELING) probably died on his plantation on Queens Creek, in York County,Virginia, sometime during the first decade of the Eighteenth century, as some of his children were born after 1700, though all of them were born much earlier than the accounts given by the genealogists. One JOHN WILLIAMS, believed to have been a son of EDWARD WILLIAMS and a cousin of (1) JOHN, died in York Co. in 1697-8, without leaving a will and probably without children, though he had several brothers. This (1) JOHN WILLIAMS was a man of some prominence in the County, and while the records examined do not give his life history, they do give enough to show that he was one of those men whose name not infrequently appeared on theo court and other records, and it is surprising how much suc entries, scarce though they were, reveal of the man. He was sued on one occasion by John Constant and after a hearing of the case, judgement was rendered against him for the payment of a judgment of four pounds Sterling, which said JOHN WILLIAMS is ordered to pay. This was on November 24, 1688." "One of the most interesting items on the YORK RECORDS grew out of a suit for assault and battery brought by JOHN WILLIAMS in 1688 against one WILLIAM WADE, in which WILLIAMS alleged that WADE had come to his plantation on Queens Creek in York County, in his absence from home, and abused his wife. Unfortunately the record in this suit fails to mention the name of JOHN WILLIAMS' wife, but I have no sort of doubt but what it was MARY. The record of the trial appears on page 104 of Vo.. 8 of the YORK COUNTY RECORDS. On March 26th a jury was empanelled by the Sheriff and returned and sworn, and who upon their oaths returned their verdct that they find for the plaintiff 1000 pounds of tobacco and cask which said verdict is confirmed and ordered that the said WADE pay to the said WILLIAMS, the aforesaid sums of 1000 lbs of tobacco and cask and costs of suit, etc." Mr. Ray goes on to say that witnesses were MARY BELL, aged 19 years, and ANN ABBOTT, that no mention is made of children and he concluded that JOHN & and his wife were newly married, and that their children started being born by 1690. It goes on to give the childrens names and estimated birth dates: JOHN WILLIAMS - 1690 SARAH WILLIAMS - 1692 NATHANIEL WILLIAMS - 1695 DANIEL WILLIAMS - 1697 JOSEPH WILLIAMS - 1699 ANNE WILLIAMS - 1702 MARY WILLIAMS - 1703 ELIZABETH WILLIAMS - 1705. ----------Pg. 240 (13) DANIEL WILLIAMS (son of JOHN WILLIAMS and his wife MARY KEELING) was born as near as can be estimated about 1697. He married URSULA HENDERSON, who was the daughter of THOMAS HENDERSON and his wife by his first marriage, URSULA KEELING, daughter of CAPT. GEORGE KEELING of New Kent and his wife URSULA FLEMING. URSULA KEELING was a sister of MARY KEELING who married JOHN WILLAMS and was the aunt of [this] DANIEL WILLIAMS. DANIEL settled in Nutbush District in Granville (now Vance) County somewhere around 1740. He died leaving a will in Granville County dated in 1759 in which he mentioned the following children: HENRY WILLIAMS JAMES WILLIAMS JOHN WILLIAMS JOSEPH WILLIAMS DANIEL WILLIAMS HENRY WILLIAMS died in Caswell County, in 1796, leaving a will in which he named his several children. [from page 196 of this book they were: DANIEL (m. ANN RICE in 1786), JOSEPH, NATHAN, HENRY, ELIZABETH, MARY SLADE, NANCY RICE, ELIZABETH, SUSANNAH, WESLEY DUKE PEOPLES, SALLY BROOKS, and JANE WILLIAMS (frm W.Book B,p.92]. JAMES WILLIAMS, was the Col. JAMES WILLIAMS who lead his men and was killed at the battle of Kings Mountain. [from page 196 his will dated 1780: wife MARY, children DANIEL, JOSEPH, JOHN, ELIZABETH, MARY, SARAH, JAMES and WASHINGTON WILLIAMS (Will book A,p.113) ] JOHN WILLIAMS. I am uncertain about the identity of this particular JOHN WILLIAMS but believe him to be the JOSEPH JOHN WILLIAMS of Granville County, whose name is mentioned several times in the Granville Co. records. In this I may be mistaken [there is a note at the bottom of the page about this which reads: That the JOSEPH WILLIAMS whose name appears so frequently on the records of Mecklenberg Co., Virginia records, was a son of JOHN WILLIAMS and his wife MARY KEELING is bourn out by the circumstance that a JOHN WILLIAMS, son of GEN. JAMES WILLIAMS, of Kings Mountain fame, left a will in that county in 1794, in which he is described as" of District 96, S.C.", and in it refers to "My Uncle, CAPT. JOHN WILLIAMS" of the same place. This also shows that JOHN WILLIAMS, son of DANIEL WILLIAMS and URSULA HENDERSON removed to 96 District in South Carolina. The records of Mecklenberg Co. VA, reflect the presence in the section of many members and many descendants of the WILLIAMS Family of York County, VA, and of other families with which they were connected, including the WILLIAMSONS, CHRUTCHFIELDS, BURTONS and others into which they married.] JOSEPH WILLIAMS. This is the COL. JOSEPH WILLIAMS merchant of Nutbush and partner in the firm WILLIAMS & BURTON at what is now Williamsboro. He married SARAH LANIER, the daughter of THOMAS LANIER, who, after his death, married his cousin COL. ROBERT WILLIAMS, of Pittsylvania County, VA, an eminent lawyer. POLLY, daughter of JOSEPH, m. HON. MATTHEW CLAY. DANIEL WILLIAMS who married his first cousin ANN HENDERSON, the daughter of SAMUEL HENDERSON and his wife ELIZABETH WILLIAMS. They had (according to a family genealogist) the following children: SAMUEL, DANIEL, JOSEPH, RICHARD, WILLIAM, DAVID, BETSY, NANCY, NUTTY and POLLY WASHER WILLIAMS. After the death of her first husband, ANN (HENDERSON)WILLIAMS married the PACOLET, in South Carolina, on ADAM POTTER. No children mentioned by this last marriage. Pg. 227 - ANN HENDERSON [b:1739]...After the death of her husband & cousin DANIEL WILLIAMS, the widow ANN HENDERSON WILLIAMS married ADAM POTTER, it is believed, in South Carolina; for it is known that she joined her sisters MRS. MITCHELL and MRS. BECKHAM and her brothers JOHN and WILLIAM HENDERSON on the Pacolet River in the Grindal Shoals settlement. Though they married in South Carolina, perhaps ADAM POTTER was a member of the Granville County POTTERS, and may have been a brother of ABRAHAM POTTER who died in Granville County in 1787, leaving THOMAS, ROBERT, POLLY, and SALLY, with JOHN POTTER their guardian. See Granville County Court Records herein for that year. [Note from my own files, this particular line is one I've researched: Ann's sisters were ELIZABETH HENDERSON, b. 1738, who married JOHN BECKHAM; and MARY HENDERSON, b. 1734, who married JOAB MITCHELL. They also had siblings: NATHANIEL HENDERSON, b. 1736, mar. SARAH FRANKLIN (widow of SUGAR JONES). SUSAN HENDERSON, b. 1743, mar. REUBEN SEARCY. JOHN HENDERSON mar. SARAH HINTON (widow of SOLOMON ALSTON JR.) SAMUEL HENDERSON, b. 1748, mar. ELIZABETH CALLOWAY. THOMAS HENDERSON, b. 1752, mar. JANE MARTIN. PLEASANT HENDERSON, b. 1750, mar. SARAH MARTIN WILLIAM HENDERSON, b. 1748?, mar. LETITIA DAVIS (widow of JARED NELSON) JUDGE (a.k.a.)COL. RICHARD HENDERSON, b.Apr.20, 1735/d. Jan. 30, 1785 Granville Co.NC - mar. ELIZABETH KEELING, b.1742/d. Apr. 26, 1788 South Carolina. ELIZABETH was the daughter of GEORGE KEELING, b.bef. 1695/d.Sept. 1759 Granville Co.NC & AGNES BULLOCK, b.abt. 1720/d. Mar. 1802 Granville Co.NC. ] One other thing about these families if these turn out to be yours. You may want to contact Evelyn Wallace, who is on this Williams list and the Granville North Carolina mailing list because she has done a great deal of work on this Williams family, and she is a descendant of Daniel Williams. One message in particular that you may be interested in discussing with her is one posted in September 2004 on the Granville Co. List. It refers to a book about the Granville Williams and their ties to Tennessee, and some of the surnames include Haislip, among others.
