JAMES WILLIAMS <http://genforum.genealogy.com/williams/messages/7440.html> by Marilyn Griffin Conner of 29730 I have done a considerable amount of research regarding Col. James Williams, who died as a result of wounds suffered at Kings Mtn. SC on Oct. 7, 1780. He died the next day. His remains are now buried in Gaffney SC and there is a memorial to him at the Gaffney Public Library. [Col. Williams' brother, Henry Williams, was my 5th great grandfather.] According to my records, Col. Williams and his wife, Mary Wallace had 8 children as follows: (1)daughter, Mary, married her cousin, James Atwood Williams (1767-1816) and they had 8 children:(1)John W. Williams who married Ann F. Martin; (2)James Atwood Williams, Jr.; (3)Daniel Williams (1787-1822) who married first Amy Bullock and second Permelia Miles; (4)Washington Williams who married Frances E. Griffen; (5)Franklin Williams who married Taphenas L. Griffen; (6)Elizabeth Ann Williams who married Reuben Cooper (1787-1884); (7) Sarah Williams who married Charles Howard Cooper; and (8)Elihu Williams. (2)Daniel (1763-1781) and (3)Joseph (1767-1781) both died at Hayes Station in the spring of 1781---they were murdered by the Tory, William Cunningham. Daniel was a Capt. in the militia ( the Little River Militia, of which Col. Williams had been in command prior to his death)and was 18 at the time of his death. Joseph was 14. (4)Elizabeth Williams---married John Griffin first and second, married James Tinsley. (5)JohnWilliams, d.1794 (6)Sarah Williams, married James Tinsley (7)James Williams, Jr., d. 1832 (8)Washington Williams, married Sarah Griffin. Washington and Sarah had at least one child, John Drayton Williams, 1818-1870. This is all the information I have concerning the descendants of Col. Williams. Since he is not in my direct line, I have not traced his line any further than listed above. You may find help in the book published in 1997 by Lewis James Williams and others under the title: "Williams: 300 Years of Leadership in America: A History of the Descendants of John Williams of Llangollen, Wales" [ISBN: 0-9658376-0-2]. The copy I found was in the Mecklenburg Public Library in Charlotte, NC. Hope this information helps.
