I have been starting to add my family lines on rootsweb family tree I was wondering if it is better to add each family in a different file or put them in one big file I do have quite a few lines I'm working on around seven or so. Thanks in advance for all the advice. --------------------------------- Yahoo! Personals Single? There's someone we'd like you to meet. Lots of someones, actually. Try Yahoo! Personals
I have lots of lines, too, on my tree database, some of them not connected to any of my family, yet, but I do include them because of the value of the information contained in the files, and with the hope that someone may connect to them someday. Most family tree databases have a way to include different family lines in your online file, or to exclude them, usually with the program you use. I use PAF (Personal Ancestral File) from the LDS, a free downloadable program which has all kinds of options for making Gedcoms, and it is fairly easy to set the parameters for what you want to use for the Gedcoms you make. I use Family Tree Maker 2005 and I am still exploring all the possibilities. I find it easy to have one large file and can copy and paste into new smaller files when necessary. The only disadvantage of having a large file is when closing the file it takes longer for the backup and it may be time for me to upgrade my computer. The advantage for having a large file is for research purposes. I keep my wife's family in a separate file and other surnames I have not connected to mine. I have used FTM for several years and upgraded since version 3 and version 2005 is the best so far. Does anyone use version 2006 and what do you like about it? I do recommend buying the software only 29.95 and not the hold FTM package and they usually have a software upgrade for 19.95. I have not seen the upgrade for 2006, is anyone using 2006? I'm using 2006 in my new computer. I have 11 in my laptop. I like 2006 but just getting to know it. I lost all my data in my old computer so now I make hard copies of everything every few days. Because now I'm have to slowly go back throug all my dozen of boxes to find my sources that I have kept. Also I using a differ line for all of mine lines it seems easier to locate different people for me. But I am seventy and not real good on a computer.Looking for William Williams born SC. about 1798. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Williams" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 4:55 AM Subject: Re: [WILLIAMS] need help with rootsweb family trees >I use Family Tree Maker 2005 and I am still exploring all the >possibilities. The one bad thing is if your file gets too large to fit on one CD when you use your burner, it is NOT like the older versions were we used floppies to back up to and could just pop another in the drive and continue. At least 2005 was not. I am not sure if 2006 is set up that way or not, but I am sure on 2005. I asked a Family Treemaker Techie and he said it was not. I am gonna try to find out if 2006 is or not. When I do for sure I will let the list know. One way around the CD thing is if you have a DVD burner you could back up to a DVD and it would fit if it is too large for a750 MB CD. Hope this helps. I've been using FTM 2006 for awhile now and just love it. This one has corrected all the problems of the old ones and is very user friendly. I've taken the beginning 2006 class online and am taking the advanced class right now. They are excellent and really get answers to all your questions. I believe that this is not an upgrade but the entire new program. It will install over the old 2005. It's well worth the $29.95 Donna Williams Kentch ----- Original Message ----- From: "Frank Williams" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 05, 2005 4:55 AM Subject: Re: [WILLIAMS] need help with rootsweb family trees > I use Family Tree Maker 2005 and I am still exploring all the > possibilities.
