Test for a female line? I've not heard of that? What does that mean? I've been told that only males carrying the last name being tested can test. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
A female, inheriting only her mother's mtdna (mitochondrial dna) can only test her direct female line, from daughter to mother to maternal grandmother, etc., back up the FEMALE line. The females coming into a woman's heritage on the fathers' lines do not count, here. Women do not inherit the father's Y-dna because that is what makes men... men! A female passes her mtdna down to both male and female children. However, a male receives his mother's mtdna as well as his father's Y-dna, and can trace back his mother's FEMALE line from son to mother to maternal grandmother, etc. (remember, no input from women who come in on a male's maternal line), and on his father's line, from son to father to paternal grandfather, etc. See www.ftdna.com for more extensive explanations. I am sorry that I did not make that clear. I was tested for a female line where I am a direct line female descendant. My Dad Burton F. Williams was tested for our Williams ydna. While a male can be tested both for ydna and mtdna, a female can only be tested for mtdna. Of course, along with that testing, are many other things that can be learned that might be of interest; i.e., possible Native American blood; haplogroup, which is a number and letter system to trace migratory patterns.
