Hi List... Here's a long shot... I've posted bfore with some success thanks to several fine folks out there. I am seeking info on my great grandfather, believed to be James V. Williams b: 1850? d: 1884? in TX (probably in Grimes Co.). Married Sally E. unk b: 1849 d: 1881? in TX (also probably in Grimes Co.). The four children: Ida LouElla Williams b: 1868? James John Williams b: 1871 He had four children: Idell, Bess, Ethel (m. ? Sparks), and "Knotty" Marylee Ada Williams b: March 7, 1875 Francis (later 'Frank') Henry Williams (my gfather) b: Dec 4, 1879, in Plantersville, Grimes Co., TX. d: June 2, 1938, in Temple, Bell Co., TX. Married Julia Essie Walker in Jewett, Leon Co., TX, Nov 10, 1901. Family story says that Sally died first followed by James V. All four children were "adopted by Professor Christian, a single man, and his spinster sister, and whose name they took as they own." I'm wondering if the "spinster sister" could have been a Williams? Perhaps an aunt or a widow (even though 'spinster' implies unmarried)? Anyone out there have a Williams female who suddenly had four children added to her household? In Grimes Co. or Leon Co., TX? Or perhaps a Christian female with this weird tie to Williams? Any help/hints appreciated. Thanks... Ken Christian Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., KY
Don't know about the mug -- although first guess might be Woodsmen of the World. I AM interested in W. D. Williams. I have a family of Williams kids from the area near Lufkin, all born between 1880 and 1895. Parents unknown. Fannie Sarah Williams is one of the children and I have her in the Census with an aunt and uncle in Angelina Co., TX in 1900. Trying to identify whether the aunt or uncle was the blood relationship, so far without luck. None of the other children are in that household, and so far, I haven't been able to identify them. One of her older brothers was William or "Billy" and the 1883 birthdate seems right for him. I have no other info on him -- no middle initial, no spouse name. Do you think your W. D. might be my "Billy?" Anne

Earlier in the twentieth century, here in the United States, men would have their own shaving mug at the neighborhood barber shop. The mugs could either be one the man brought himself or one bought through the barber. Mugs ranged from very plain marked just to identify the owner or elaborately decorated with name and illustrations depicting employment, hometown, or fraternal emblems. The tongs, yoke and ax are associated with lumbering. The bird and the leaf may have been chosen to differentiate between W. D. Williams' mug and any other lumberman. (Being able to read may not have been a requirement of the barbering profession of the time.) Go to http://www.google.com and type in shaving mugs -- you'll find links to books and organizations which may allow you to identify all the symbols on your mug. (I have an ancestor who was a brick mason -- his mug has a picture of an arched brick bridge on it.)
Mark and Lilly; Is it possible that the shaving mug insignia was that of a lumberman's union or something similar? Perhaps a special gift from a friend. Daphne N. Does anyone have any information of a Annie J. Williams who was born in St. Paul, Minnesota born around 1858 or 1859. She married Charles E. Clough but I don't know where. they did live in Milan ,New Hampshire and Sawyerville, Quebec Canada.I don't know who her family are. She did have the following children maybe more. Oscar born about 1883 Quebec Ella M. born about 1887 Quebec- married Allen Batley Harold born 10-12-1893 in Milan New Hampshire Thank you Darlene
Looking for any information on Anna (also used Emma as first name) Rosetta Williams. She was born in IOWA, married Charles C. Hollister about 1884 in either Clay Co. or Buena Vista Co., IA. A fellow researcher told me Davis twp and Sioux Rapids were a "stone's throw" from each other, but different counties. The only family information I have is from two pictures of her sisters, one of Dora (married a Griffith) and one of Mattie. I am assuming Anna was born about 1865. I hope someone out there can help break down this frustrating "Brick Wall"!

Linda, your name sounds familiar to me, I think we have corresponded before? I know of the Samuel Williams you write about. I believe he was probably the brother of my Shadrack Williams who was also born in St. Marys County but 2 years earlier than Samuel. Shadrack also lived in Shenandoah Co. (til 1788) and in Russell Co. at the same time as Samuel. You say that Samuel married Elizabeth Crump. I thought that Elizabeth "Betsy" Crump married Samuel's son Andrew Williams, Betsey b.1819 according to the 1850 U.S. census of Russell Co. This information came from the book "Heritage of Russell Co., Virginia Vol 2", pg 513-514, available on microfiche from the LDS. This book says she was "from Montgomery Co., Md." In 1996 I wrote to the person who submitted this portion of the book but received no reply. Have you seen the possible wife for Samuel as being Elizabeth EATON? I have that handwritten in my notes but unfortunately did not record where I heard it. I presume you have not found anything on Samuel's parents. You don't give us any dates for your ancestors. I presume you know in which counties these people lived in Missouri and in Illinois. First, of course, you look for marriage records, many of them having been indexed and filmed by the Family History Library, Salt Lake City. The 1880 census and some subsequent ones are helpful in telling where the parents of each enumerated person were born, which sometimes give you excellent leads. Second, if you know in which counties these persons lived, try to find an OLD county history for each county (and surrounding counties). Some of the folks just loved to talk--and frequently (not always) they gave some pretty accurate info to the compiler of the county history--how many times they had been married, what the name of each wife was, etc., etc. The Family History Library at Salt Lake City has filmed many of these old county histories (catalog is at www.familysearch.org--link is on lower left). If you don't find one there, you might find one at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN. Failing either of these techiniques, I suggest you study a good how-to book on genealogy. Sometimes we overlook the obvious--such as land records, tax records, probate records, and court records. Good luck! E.W.Wallace

I'm looking for descendants of CHESTER DAVID WILLIAMS, b. Hinds Co., MS, d. 1939 in Taylor, Texas. He was living at 1010 Oak Street, Taylor, TX at the time of his death. His wife was ADA MILLER. I believe Chester David Williams was a brother to my grandfather, Henry McKinney Williams, who died in Natchez, Adams County, MS January 1939. These two men were the sons of Sarah Elizabeth White and Jared/Jarrett Williams of Brownsville, Hinds Co., MS. They were the grandsons of Ira E. and Mary Norwood Fort Williams, who migrated from Darlington Co., SC to Greene County, MS in 1823. I want/need to learn more about my Williams Family. Any help greatly appreciated. Jean Williams Farrar Regent, Natchez Chapter NSDAR Natchez, MS 39120 jwfarrar@cableone.net
I would like to know more about George Washington Williams. He lived here and I was sure he was a brother to William Carrol Williams. I suspect they were related to my Williams families since they came from Warren County, Tennessee. I have been in touch with others who are connected to David and Elizabeth in Tennessee. Please respond. Thanks Laverne Williams Forsythe ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey E.
