    3. I created a page of census images i have on file listed by the year and surnames i research. The Williams family is one of the most interwound families associated with my Shivers family line.Multiple marriages, guardian's of deceased veteran Williams orphans, neighbors and friends of the family. My devotion to understanding the bond these families had as they migrated the Usa is my drive. As i assemble and finish the southern history of the Shivers family in Va,Nc,Sc,Ga,Al,Tn,Ms,La,Ar,Tx i run across these many Williams family members in my collection and want to share what i have with this list. Currently i have 519 Williams individuals in my database, these are individuals i am collecting and archiving documents on. From marriage licenses, wills , probates, census's, tombstone photos, family portraits, diaries, bibles, business licenses, deeds, military paperwork, So if you are searching Williams family in Nc,Sc,Middle and W.Tn, N.Miss, E.Ark, its a sure bet that i am posting information about them. Use this page to see whats been posted so far. http://www.xtremechat.org/genealogy/censusbysur/ James E Shivers Below is a sample of what i have posted, the rest of the collection is still a collection and soon to be processed. Since i am the only processor you will have to wait and i am going as fast as i can. Overwhelming family support has been involved along with numerous rootsweb mailing lists, discussion groups, etc where i have been looking for the pieces to this huge puzzle. I would like to hear from those with family history from the 1810-1850 period from Va to Ark This is history and it speaks for itself once we pull it out in the open. I would like to know everything possible about these families and give them a place in my puzzle. I would like to put a list member with a branch of the family to work with. 1850TN_Shelby-Williams Charles E 1850TN_Shelby-Williams Robt-sr 1850TN_Shelby-Williams Sam M 1860AR_Jackson-Williams-Allen_slave 1860AR_Jackson-Williams NC 1870TN_Shelby-Williams HS 1870TN_Shelby-Williams HS 1870TN_Shelby-Williams James 1870TN_Shelby-Williams John 1870TN_Shelby-Williams John H 1870TN_Shelby-Williams Jos N 1870TN_Shelby-Williams ML 1870TN_Shelby-Williams Peter 1870TN_Shelby-Williams Robert 1870TN_Shelby-Williams Val 1870TN_Shelby-Williams WB 1870TN_Shelby-Williams WN 1900LA_Rapides-Williams WTC 1920TN_Shelby_Williams-JamesF

    3. Hello Karen and Listers, Although I don't have a match for your WILLIAMS names, I will share some of my line, ISAAC WILLIAMS AND NANCY TEMPERANCE ? . My line begins a couple of generations before yours. You will note that my WILLIAMS were in Lauderdale County AL before moving to Hardeman and Fayette County TN. The following, compiled in my FTM, has come from many sources, some not verified. This family was in Alabama before moving over the state line in Tennessee. I too have difficulty in finding the right Williams family. Note the BROCK marriages. Besides these BROCK connections, my great grandmother was CELIA ANN BROCK b. about 1822 in TN, who married James Allen BARTON. The BARTONs settled in Walker County, AL. I would love to correspond with descendants of David WILLIAMS. My next in line was Martha Temperance WILLIAMS who married Jehoiakim GRIFFIN. 2. Kurt Pickering
    3. Hey Victoria, et. list ... I have an Eleaner, as it's spelled in the 1820 census, Williams. Too old to be yours but maybe an aunt or something. I don't have a great deal on her. Eleaner married Phillip Orndorff (b 23 MAR 1767 in Vincent Twp, Chester Co, PA) in 1795 in Frederick County, VA. Among their known children children was Jesse, born about 1804 - my great-great-great-great grandfather. Phillip died after the 1810 census and in time for his estate to be cleared in 1818. Eleaner survived her husband and appears as head of household in the 1820 Virginia census. I have no idea who who parents were, or where she was born. Or when and where she died, for that matter. Hope this is of some use to someone, and/or that someone may recognize her and fill in some of her almost empty canvass. 2. E.W. Wallace. You are usually so good at answering questions. The only thing I can think of is to find them in the census. It is hard to tell if the surety are kin or not. I wish I knew the real answer to that question. My Williams line is a long brick wall. William Williams father of Sennett Williams who is father of Mary Bine Williams. Can't find her or dates on her. She married Charles Simms. No dates on him either. They were both from WV. maybe Nicholas County. They were the parents of my grandmother Henrietta Simms Surgeon. She was born May 2, 1863, married June 20, 1889, and died Jan. 9, 1928 at Wolfe Creek, Monroe Co. WV. Sorry for the rambling. Henriellen Surgeon Kibler in hot, hot Alabama.

Question: Is Nathaniel Williams, the surety, the father or the brother of John Williams, later known as Col. John Williams of Surry Co., NC? Question: Who are the parents of Betsey Williamson? Where had they lived previous to their Charlotte Co. residence? Thanks for your input--preferably with sources!!! (This is a collateral family--not a direct ancestor.) E.W.Wallace

    1. [WILLIAMS] James R. Williams born 1829 - Probably Not a Child of Rebecca Lanier Williams
    2. Ehrrr@aol.com poses these questions and makes a comment in the first paragraph which applies to much of our genealogy. The eternal search for the correct documentation keeps us bleary-eyed and down with the bookworms, microfilm readers, microfiche readers, and now the internet!! This subscriber asks: I am going to post my line again. I would appreciate any info anyone has on this lineage. We dig and dig and still get some wrong info. E. W., I would like your opinion if you think this line could connect to the Williams that married Rebecca Lanier. He seems to have most of the same given names. I had thought my gg grandfather was born in NC but he says on the 1850 Knox Co., TN census he was born in TN. There is also in Knoxville a Joseph L. Williams, age 44 and b. in TN, married to Melinda age 28, b. NC. Children: Charles. 6; Joseph L., 3; another son age 1 and a daughter that looks like Medora age 3/12, all born in TN. I am womdering if my James R. and Joseph L. connect in some way. James Williams; age 21; laborer, born in TN Nancy, his wife; age 24; born in SC E.W.'s long-winded answer about Joseph Williams of Surry Co., NC and his wife Rebecca Lanier. The original documents should be searched to make sure these secondary sources are correct. But they will provide guidelines for you to determine whether your Williamses are of the same family. I write biographies for most of the people in my database so that I can keep track of what resources I have used. Also, these bios help me analyze what errors I may have made and what else I need to do. Sometimes when I go over the biographies, I discover a fact or a person which or whom I had insufficient knowledge at the time I wrote the bio. Here goes some info which I gathered in several libraries over several years: In a book published by NSDAR, James Hunter Chapter, Madison, NC in 1977, EARLY FAMILIES OF THE NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES OF ROCKINGHAM AND STOKES WITH REVOLUTIONARY SERVICE, the children of Joseph and Rebecca Williams are listed along with some information about Joseph Williams and some brief notes about his wife: "Joseph Williams--Born 27 Mar 1748 Hanover Co., VA, died 11 May 1827 Stokes Co., NC; married 11 Sept 1772 Surry Co., NC, Rebecca Lanier, born 27 Jan 1757, died 1832." [The place of marriage should be Granville Co., NC, assuming this marriage took place at the place where the bond was issued. The death date is in conflict with the death date given in the obituary.] "Joseph Williams represented Surry Co. at the NC Provincial Congress at Hillsborough Aug 1775; also at the Provincial Congress of 1776. During this time he was serving as Clerk of Court in Surry Co. when he wasn't actively serving as lieut colonel of the Surry Co. Militia. He was one of the leaders in expeditions to quell Indian uprisings and participated in the Battle of Moore's Creek. Later in the war, he served as adjutant to Gen Nathanael Greene's Army. .... "Joseph Williams lived at Pantha Creek, near Shallow Ford of the Yadkin River. He and his wife are buried on his plantation; his grave has been marked as a Revolutionary Soldier by DAR; and descendants see that the graves are well kept. This area is now in Forsyth Co., NC. "... information seemed to be mixed with that of the children of Nathaniel Williams of Rockingham Co., older brother of Col. Joseph Williams. Hence most dates are omitted, hoping that later a complete family Bible record can be found on the Williams family. "The will of Joseph Williams is recorded in Surry Co., NC Will Book 4, page 1, dated 28 Jan 1812, with codicils on 7 Aug 1813 and 1819, and probated in 1827. It named his wife Rebecca/Rebekah and the following children in this order..." Nathaniel "Nathy" - an afflicted child Joseph, Jr. m. Watson, 1973]) One of of the executors of Robert Lanier, Surry Co., NC, was one Joseph Williams. Linn, cited previously, adds these notes to the abstract of the will of Robert Lanier, 28 Feb 1789, Surry Co., NC: "Robert Lanier was a brother-in-law of Joseph Williams, the latter appointed the guardian of Thomas Lanier, 17 Aug 1786. Joseph Williams married Rebecca Lanier, b. 27 Jan 1757, d. 1832." (Linn, ibid.) Surry Co. tax list, 1769, shows Joseph Williams with 8 whites, 9 blacks. Court minutes of Surry Co., NC 14 Aug 1800: "Ordered by the court that Calvin Wheaton, William Thornton, Henry Speer, Henry Young, John Williams, Jon Haines, and Thomas Hadley, Esquires or any three of them be app't a committee to settle with Joseph Williams as guardian of Thomas Lanier and also with the executors of Robert Lanier dec'd and make their return into the Clerks office or to the next court." The fact that Lanier and Williams were merchants of Rowan Co., from which Surry Co. was formed in 1771 is shown in abstracts of Surry County Will Book A 1771-1787: Page 8 - B of S (Bill of Sale) - Joseph Spairpoint to Robert Lanier and Joseph Williams, 1772. NC will book 2 show some activities of Joseph Williams (who may have signed himself as "Jo. Williams") in 1783 and also of Robert Lanier, his business partner. A transcript of a Williams Bible record, in VA State Archives, says Joseph was born 1748 and died 1827. Virginia State Archives holds a document "cc 28892" - "Williams Family Bible, Hanover Co. and North Carolina 1748-1800." The following notes accompany the record, which is not a true Bible record but merely a transcription: "Family Register Joseph Williams and his wife (From the McClung Collection, Knoxville, TN)." "Copied from family Bible in possession of Nicholas Williams at Panther Creek ... Co., NC by Rev. James King Stringfield while visiting grandfather Wm. Williams." The date of the visit, as indicated below, was 1914. The following was copied from the VA State Archives Holdings: "Joseph Williams was born 27 Mar 1748 and departed this life 11 Aug 1827." "Rebecca [too faint to read] (Lanier) Williams was born 27 Jan 1757 (?) and ... 1832." These are the dates which White ascribes to Joseph Williams, but instead they seem to pertain to Rebecca. "Joseph and Rebecca Williams were m. 16 Sept 1772." "Children: Robert 1773 Joseph 1775 John 1778 Nathaniel 1780 William 1783 Lewis ) twin 1786 Thomas Lanier ) twin 1786 Rebekah 1788 Sterling 1791 dec'd as infant Alexander 1793 Jannie (?) 1796 Nicholas 1800 "Copy by James King Stringfield, Nashville, TN, 1914." (Note: This John Williams, wife Malinda White, is reportedly the ancestor of Thomas Lanier "Tennesse" Williams [26 Mar 1911, Canton, Madison Co., MS-25 Feb 1983, NYC.] From "The Ancestry of Thomas Lanier "Tennesse" Williams" in NEHGS NEXUS, Vol. VIII, Nos. 3 & 4.) Regarding Joseph Williams born in 1775, the following death notice appeared in a contemporary newspaper: "WILLIAMS, Maj. Joseph, aged 65, Oct. 5, 1840, at his residence in Surry Co. (Oct. 23, 1840)" (Robert M. Topkins, MARRIAGE AND DEATH NOTICES FROM THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN (Salisbury, North Carolina) 1820-1842 [Spartanburg SC: The Reprint Co. 2. You wanted to know about a family in Benton Co., IL. I do little research in Illinois--the county in which I am interested is a burned county, but I managed to get some info because of an old county history for that county (in fact two of them). Also, someone had done some cemetery inscriptions which I found in a journal for a nearby county. (Genealogy is not always in county courthouses.) Anyway, may I suggest a couple of routes for you to take: Since you are studying Illinois, this is to inform you that Illinois State Archives has several databases, including a marriage index. I did not stop to search it but located a good many links to Illinois State Archives by using the search engine google. Type in htttp://www.google.com Then when a blank presents itself, type in quotation marks Illinois State Archives. There are a number of links, one for public land records, another for marriages, and I didn't explore the rest. I was testing google.com. You might even type in your ancestor's name in quotation marks and see what comes up--perhaps a lot of listings for living persons with the same name, but look for links that mention genealogy or rootsweb or some genealogy-related link. Another route you may want to take: Have you explored the LDS website at www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right of the initial webpage. You can type in the county you are searching (lower case okay, but do not use the word county) and the state and see what holdings there may be for that Illinois county. You can borrow film (not books unless they have been filmed) from Salt Lake City for a small fee through your local LDS center. A possible route: If this man were a physician, it may be that National Genealogical Society has a biography/obituary for a deceased physician. They have a website: www.ngsgenealogy.org There is a charge for this search for a deceased physician. Hope you find your ancestors. E.W.Wallace

    3. Seeking information on ancestor Eleanor Williams b. 28 Jan. 1822 and d. 1848 at age 26. She married Richard Augustus Elkins and bore five children that we know of -- William Thomas Elkins b. 1838; Sarah M. Elkins b. 1839; Andrew T. Elkins b. 1842; Martha R. Elkins b. 1843; and Hannah L. Elkins b. 1846. Need information on her family -- parents, where they were from. She and Richard Augustus were in Benton County, IL. We believe Richard Augustus was a doctor. He also died young in 1852 at age 35 leaving children to be raised by relatives. Would welcome any information on this family. Vicki McCarty kbird@whidbey.net

    3. This is a letter my gr granduncle Stanley W. DAVIS wrote to Mr. Camp re his son James - Decatur, Ala. Aug 9th 1864 Mr. Camp Dear Sir It is with painful feelings I have to address you on this un-pleasant business. You have doubtless heard before this of James death as the orderly wrote you immediately. I have been with the Co. but a short time and did not know James as well as most of the others. Since I have been here I have always known him a good boy and of the best soldiers in the company. I did not see him after he went to the Post Hospital. He had been there but a few days and none of us thought him dangerous. He left $13.40 in money, his clothing we boxed up and sent to you by express yesterday. The express charges had to be paid in advance. Where were $2.50, leaving in money $10.90 which I will send to you in this. Please let us know as soon as you receive the box of things if all straight, and this money. The Regt. is very busy now, the Brig. of Infantry that has been here, left and now we have much more to do than formerly. There is considerable sickness in the Regtment now, more than we have had before in a long time. Several poor boys have died with disease since we've been here. It is pretty hard for men to come here and be sick and die with disease, but they are just as worthy, just as noble heroes as though they had been slain in battle. Only about eight months ago I lost a darling brother, one whom I truly loved, but he was taken not by disease, but was shot down while doing his duty shot down by those wearing the same uniform of blue, drunken Kentuckians. Oh! Mr. Camp this is surely a cruel war but one waged for great and holy principles, and in which I am willing to spend my time till right and justice shall be established! Weather here is very warm has rained almost every day for a week. With much sympathy, I am your servant, Stanley W. Davis 1st Lt. Co "D" Michigan ============= Stanley W. Davis joined Company A of the 18th Michigan Infantry Regiment in July, 1862 at Hudson, Michigan. Stanley mustered in (was sworn in) in August, 1862 as a private. In January,1863, he was promoted to 2nd Lt., and in March, 1864 to 1st Lt. He also transferred from Company A to Company D of the 18th Michigan. He was wounded (and apparently captured) in Sept. 1864. He was released "on parole" in November 1864. He was discharged June 26, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. I would love to know who he married, where he lived, who his children were and when and where he died . ======== Stanley's brother whom he speaks of in his letter was born 1839, and the next younger brother to Stanley - His name was Charles William DAVIS - This is what I know of him - Charles William Davis volunteered in the Michigan Infantry, at Hudson, Lenawee, Michigan on the 21st day of July 1862 as a private. [same time as his older brother Stanley] Charles was mustered into the service as a corporal on the 26th day of August 1862 at Hillsdale, Lenawee, Michigan in Company "A", 18th Regiment of the Michigan Infantry Volunteers to three years or during the war; He was born in Union Springs, Cayuga, New York. he was 23 years of age, five feet, eleven inches high, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a farmer. Charles was promoted from 8" corpl to be 5 corpl. Feb 28th 1863 ..was sick in his quarters that day. On June 1, 1863 he was promoted from 5 corporal to 3 corpl. On the 27 of July 1863 he was detailed for duty at Brig Head quarters by S.O. No. 12 Charles William Davis was killed while on duty as a Provost guard at Nashville, Davidson County, Tenn. on the 27th of November 1863. The last entry in his file is..."died from effect of gun shot wound received while on duty as guard at Nashville, Tenn. Nov 24, 1863. Final statement rendered". (it says Nov 24th and the other entry says Nov 27, 1863). The effects of Charles William Davis was given to his father, Joshua Davis on 21 Dec 1863, it lists: 1 cap, 1 great coat, 1 flannel sack coat, 1 pair of trowsers, 2 pairs cotton drawers, 2 flannel shirts, 1 pair boots, 2 pair socks, 1 haversack.."I certify, on honor that the above inventory comprises all of the effect of Corporal Charles W. Davis, deceased, and that the effects are in the hands of Joshua Davis, the descendants father". *signed S.W. Davis 2nd Lieutenant, station: Nashville, Tenn dated Dec 21st 1863. *at the time I received the data on Charles Williams DAVIS - I had no idea that the person S. W. DAVIS that signed his last entry was his brother Stanley Williams DAVIS - The lineage of Charles 4)& Stanley 4) DAVIS is - Joshua 3) DAVIS md Sophia 6) WILLIAMS Joshua 2) DAVIS md Hannah 6) ADAMS Llewellyn 1) DAVIS md Bridget Ann JONES Llewellyn 1) DAVIS AP DAVID came to Chester county Pennsylvania about 1704, he had 5 of his brothers that came at different times, I think LLewellyn was the last to come here, they were from Wales - The WILLIAMS family goes back to the emigrant Robert 1) WILLIAMS and his wife Elizabeth 1) STALHAM - The ADAMS LINE goes back to Henry 1) ADAMS of Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts. The JONES line goes to Rev. Malachi JONES and his wife Mary, they were the emigrants from Wales. Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com
