A book which you may try to borrow on interlibrary loan is one by Patricia Law Hatcher, Certified Genealogist. Title: Producing a Quality Genealogy I believe it costs about $19.95. For some details about this book, use the search engine www.google.com Type in quotation marks Patricia Law Hatcher. About the fourth entry down is some information about her book. (I have had some classes instructed by her--she's a perfectionist but knows computers.) One does not get to be a certified genealogist and invited to lecture at national conferences unless one knows genealogy. Just a suggestion. You may find a more up-to-date book on the subject, but I doubt it! E.W.Wallace

What genealoly program are you using? Doesn't have a feature to compose a "book" report? I believe most do. >Can someone give me pointers on how to put a genealogy book together. Brenda, I have yet to find a program that does everything I want it to do, so I use bits and pieces from several different programs. Here's how I organized my first draft: 1. I set up four sections, corresponding to the paternal surnames of my four grandparents, ie. paternal surname of each grandparent. 2. I printed a pedigree chart using my parents as base of the tree, one for their paternal side and one for their maternal side. You could also use yourself or your children. 3. I printed a descendant tree and family group sheet for each of the four paternal surnames and placed this after the pedigree chart for that surname. 4. I printed the tree & group sheets of the spouse's family next (maternal lines). 5. I printed descendant trees & family group sheets for each of the surnames of the people who married into my four base surnames.. I then placed the pages for each surname in alphabetical order and put them after the paternal and maternal surnames for that section.. Each section looks like this: title page with surname pedigree chart for parent/self/child family group sheets for ancestor with surname family group sheets for everyone with that surname, from oldest to youngest descendant tree for maternal side family group sheets for maternal side rest of surnames alphabetically: descendant tree followed by family group sheets for each surname. I put the wives' family group sheets with their maiden surname unless I had no ancestors for them. Then I just printed the spouse's family group sheet to include all of the data for his wife The descendant trees & group sheets are printed double-sided. The photos are one-sided so the color doesn't bleed through or otherwise interfere if the photos were printed double-sided. This if my first draft, and I may change it later, but so far it has worked well. I had thougnt about putting the family group sheets behind the relevant page of the pedigree chart, but then you can't look someone up unless you know where they are on the chart. Keeping them in alphabetical order after the family group sheets of the grandparents' surnames makes it much easier to find a specific individual quickly. So, for example, here's how the section is set up for my Stebbins surname: Stebbins title page (1 page) [grandmother's paternal surname] Pedigree chart using my mother as the base (68 pages) Descendants of Rowland Stebbins (4 pages) [immigrant ancestor] Family group sheet for each descendant of Rowland, by generation, beginning with Rowland 11 generations, 42 pages--this includes photos placed with the family group sheet of the individual for whom the photo is relevant). I included Rowland's wife on his group sheet because, for now, I'm not going any further back than the original immigrant. Descendant tree of Dr. William Reed Lilly [grandmother's maternal side] Family group sheet for each descendant of William, beginning with first generation Desscendant tree & family tree for Mary Ellen Robbins, wife of William Descendant tree and family group sheet of the 76 other surnames who married into the Stebbins and Lilly families (too many pages to count!) I also used MSWorks to write an introduction to the entire genealogy. I included stories about how I got started, some of my research adventures, mentioned notable kin with interesting stories, and anyhting else I wanted to include in the narrative. I hope this makes sense. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. If anyone has comments/recommendations I'd welcome them. Anita Hoyer
Can someone give me pointers on how to put a genealogy book together. I am putting it in a program, but want it in writing too. I am starting to pull my hair out over this. I have changed the format many time, but it seems to go haywire the further I get. So do I start the first page with me? Is it better to tab names by generations? Or maybe dates? Do I stack the tabs by generations? Do I make a bunch of notebooks? Right now it is 3 inches thick. I know you will say what ever is best for me, but I am really confused as what is best! Thank you for any input............Brenda

I wondered if anyone might be interested in this obit from the New York Times this weekend CLARKE WILLIAMS, 80, Chairman of Large Rural Phone Company Monroe, La, 7 June 2002 (AP) Clarke M. Williams, who built a tiny telephone company that was a gift from his parents into the large rural telecommunications concern CenturyTel. Inc died here on Wednesday. He was 80. Mr Williams who had kidney failure and was undergoing dialysis, died after surgery. He was chairman of CenturyTel, which employs more than 6,000 people and has customers in 21 states. He will be succeded by Glen Post III who is now president. Mr Williams grew up in his family's business, the 75 customer Oak Ridge Telephone Company, in northern Lousiana, which had been bought in 1930 by William Clarke and Marie Williams. One of his first jobs was working the switchboard, which was wired in the living room of the family home. After returning from WW II in 1946 Mr Williams was given ownership of the company as a wedding present and borrowed $150 to pay for the company's first dial switcher. In 1950 he bought an additional exchange in Marion La and expanded the company into a three state service with 10,000 access lines. In 1968 Mr Williams incorporated the company as Central Telephone and Electronics. The name was changed to Century Telephone Enterprises Inc in 1971 and the company went public in 1978. Last year the company rejected a $6.1 billion takeover bid from its major rival, the Alltel Co in Little Rock Ar. but agreed this year to sell its cellular business to Alltel for $1.65 billion in cash. Mr Williams is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, two daughters, Annette Carroll of Oak Grove La and Carolyn Perry of Monroe La, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His son, former president of Century Tel, died in 1994.
Looking for information on Ella or Herschel Williams in both Elwood, Indiana and Anderson, Indiana Both lived in Elwood through the 1930's and I know that Ella was living in Anderson Indiana in 1941. Ella was my grandmother and Herschel was my uncle. Edward Jennings Pigeon Forge, TN

My G-G-Grandparents Alva PROUTY and EMELINE FANCHIER PROUTY were Fond du Lac county when their daughter ADDIE PROUTY was born probably in 1859. Our family records list her birthdate as August 09, 1861, but she is listed as an infant in the 1860 census. ALVA PROUTY was listed in the 1847 Wisconsin territorial census that recorded heads of household, number of males, number of females, and total individuals in the household on December 1, 1847. The census taker in the town of Seven Mile Creen (renamed Lamartine in 1848) was M. L. Noble. For Seven Mile Creek, totals of 173 males and 133 females were submitted to the Secretary of the Wisconsin Territory by S. S. N. Fuller, Taker of the Census. The numbers are written on the bottom of page 38 of the Fond du Lac census and are repeated on Fuller's summary sheet, so presumably they represent his calculations. Prouty, Alva 1(white male) 2 (white females) . Addie WILLOUGHBY married DAVID WILLOUGHBY (son of HOPSON WILLOUGHBY and MALINDA WILLIAMS) November 27, 1879 in Coyville, Kansas. Is anyone else researching this family? Sandy Heinrich
