Williams, Eleazer Williams, Eleazer, c.1787-1858, missionary among Native North Americans. He was the son of Thomas Williams, a St. Regis Native American chief, and a white woman; he was educated in private schools in Massachusetts. He became a Episcopal missionary among the New York Native Americans. When the Oneida went (1822) to a reservation near Green Bay, Wis., he went with them and remained until 1850, when he returned to New York. He is credited with simplifying the written Mohawk language. Among other things he translated (1853) the Book of Common Prayer into Iroquois and wrote (1859) a Life of Te-ho-ra-gwa-ne-gen (the Iroquois name of Thomas Williams, his father). He is remembered for claiming, without substantiation, to have been Louis XVII of France (the Lost Dauphin), the supposed kidnapped son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Eleazer was the form used by Williams himself, although the name occurs also as Eleazar, Lazar, and Lazau. See W. Wight, Eleazer Williams: His Forerunners, Himself (1896).
Morgan County, GA was formed in 1807. It was formed from Baldwin, and Jasper County. I'm searching for a William WILLIAMS born GA.(1850 Randolph County, AL. census). He was 52 years old on the census married to Cynthia ???. she is 40 years old. If you find anything on this couple let me know PLEASE. Estelle
Thanks for the replies all, I guess there are not many Morgan co. GA Williams researchers on the list for now, so I'll go a little more in depth to see if anything rings a bell with anyone. My Jesse Hollis was born in GA ca 1809. He seems to have 1st married Elizabeth Ball in Morgan Co. in 1833. I do not know anything about their family. I have seen that Jesse did get land in the GA land lottery, but I have not yet figured the exact location. In 1837 a George Williams married a Burrilly Hollis. I have had no idea how they may be related. Then on Jan. 9, 1848 Jesse Hollis married Nancy A. Williams who was born in GA ca 1834. I am not positive where they went in 1850, possibly Alabama, but in the 1860 and 1870 census they were in Murray Co. GA. In March of 1873, due to the death of Jesse, Nancy consented for my gg-grandfather George Franklin Hollis to be a "Ward" of Arthur Gilbert . In the following months, She gave up her other sons. Henry Newton Hollis went to Lt. Col. John H. Kuhn. Jesse (Jepe) Green Hollis went to James Franklin Brindle, James A. Hollis went to Balis C. Hunsucker. Hunsucker was Brindle's son-in-law and I believe Brindle was Gilbert's brother-in-Law. Anyway, family stories say that Nancy was part Cherokee and that she left to live with her folks, possibly on a reservation. Oh, their was an older sister Mary, but she was not listed in the court records or marriage index for Murray Co. I thought that she may have died too, or went with her mother. I am not sure of the exact date that Morgan Co. was formed, but at least by 1820 it had been split from Balwin Co.. In the 1820 census their were 8 Williams families listed. The heads of house were: Edward, Jacob, Henry J., 2@ John , Jonas, William, & William R. Williams. There were only 2 Hollis Families in 1820: John and James. I suspect James is my ancestor, but I still need definitive proof. There were 3 Ball families in 1820, 6 Gilbert families, and several other possible family ties. In 1830 I have only found 2 Williams in Morgan Co. , James and John Williams. One Newton Williams was in Wilkinson County, which is nearby. I am still have to look through the rest of the 1830 index. I need to double-check, but in the 1840 census their were only 3 Williams families listed in Morgan Co. These were Allen Williams, Benjamin Williams, and Roderick Williams. Roderick was the only one to have a daughter and she was near the correct age for Nancy. {I have not yet checked surrounding counties}. The 1850 census index for Morgan Co. consisted of 3 Williams families: Alexander, Frances 15 GA , and Newton 27 GA. I could not find Alexander. Frances was supposed to be on the same page, but she was listed under a Alexander Brown, so the index was probably faulted. I will share more as I continue with my research. Keith Bailey
Dear Keith Bailey, You wrote Are there any people researching the Williams that were in Morgan Co. GA in the 1830-1860 range? I am searching out the parents of Nancy Williams who married Jesse Hollis there in 1848. Keith Bailey kbailey@frontiernet.net Response: Are you near an LDS family history center? If so, there may be a little tool there which MAY (no guarantees in genealogy) help you narrow your search for the appropriate Williams family. In the time period you are interested in, fellows generally married girls in the neighborhood. The horse got tired, and besides it was generally a round trip to go courting. Therefore you want to find a Williams family who lived in the general vicinity of the Hollis family in the time period specified, and perhaps in Georgia or a nearby jurisdiction. First, determine whether Morgan Co., GA was in existence at that time. Then determine what are the surrounding counties. The bride may have lived on the county boundary and her fellow was just across the way. At your LDS center, there are hundreds of microfiche called AIS. Call you your center and ask the days and hours it is open. Then ask whether they have Accelerated Indexing System (AIS) on hundreds of microfiche. This is a consolidated census index (index only--not census) for the whole US as the US was composed in each census year--it kept growing bigger!!! This index goes through the 1850 census. Since the 1790 census is missing, tax lists were used instead. But don't start with the first census years--called Search 1. Start with one of the later Searches when you know your people were in Georgia. Look for the Hollis families first and note the locations--the counties and the states are given, and the census year. Make notes of likely candidates. (A New York or New Jersey Hollis family is probably not a candidate.) Be sure to note the locality. Now, you are ready to tackle the Williamses (whew! What a job!) Instead of reading every name, note which Williamses are in the localities where you have located the Hollis families. Caution--if you find your families, it is a great tool. The only problem is that unskilled help, I am told, was used in compiling this massive index, and there are misspellings, omissions, duplications, etc. But you may find it useful. You should train yourself to use this tool when you are stumped as to the whereabouts of some of your families--who did migrate, didn't they? As we moved Native Americans out of their usual homes (cessions, we called them), the Anglos and their compadres moved in!!! And the Louisiana Purchase opened up many lands for occupation. There should be a four-page handout (free) at your LDS center to explain AIS and its uses. If you want to try to tackle the instructions on the internet, try www.familysearch.org Look for research guidance (or guides). Check the word Almanacs and then look for AIS. The instructions may confuse you, but get used to the terms, and after you try this index, you will get used to it. Professional genealogists use this index all the time when beginning a new project for a new client.!! E.W.Wallace Who has three Williams lines!!!

Hi, Are there any people researching the Williams that were in Morgan Co. GA in the 1830-1860 range? I am searching out the parents of Nancy Williams who married Jesse Hollis there in 1848. Keith Bailey kbailey@frontiernet.net
Looking for any members of the above family. Believe the children of Wm. and Nancy were: Absolem, Jonathon, Henry, Jesse and Williams.
Our Northern Ireland adventure is over, the answers found and it is time to move on; to Stirling in Scotland with the prospect of new "finds"and more adventures. For almost six years I have researched the Presbyterian Ulsterman and in doing so found four obscure out of print publications that should be included in every library. Before my focus changes to Scottish research I am offering to interested researchers ONE last time the opportunity to purchase (cost of copies and postage) the following items. All items have either expired copyrite provisions or in the case of the Hagy thesis I have the authors permission to reproduce the document. They are: The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery, 1905, 1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A. member of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson & McCormack, 54 King St. 211 pages. On our trip we met JB Shannon age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprinting and he was a window to the past. He is the last living person who had anything to do with these books and says they are still the BEST source for Ulster presbyterian research. From Lecky I quote, "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places...." If I send this post to your list it means your surname is listed in the appendix. Cost: $25.00 Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period 1688-1691, by William R. Young, 1932, Eyre and Spottiswoode, London 350 pages. Contains the following biographical sketches: (1500) 1. The leaders of the County Associations, who with their levies took part in the Preliminary operations and contributed much of the man power for the Defence. 2. The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the gates on the 8th Dec. 1688. 3. The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege (over 1200 genealogical sketches) 4. Those engaged in the relief of the city. One of the most difficult sources to locate, in fact almost impossible. Months worth of reading and packed with great genealogy. Cost: $25.00 A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskillen in 1688 and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical Notes, by the Rev. John Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Dicese of Derry. Includes the Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of Limmerick by Lord Macaulay, Toronto, 1869 The historical poems are family genealogies about those who were at Derry and where they came from. Along with "Fighters of Derry" these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others that I have seen. 311 pages Cost: $25.00 Castle's Woods: Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, A thesis presented to the Faculty of the Department of History, East Tennessee St. University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts, by James W. Hagy, 1966, 150 pages. The most popular of the documents offered it covers the families who settled in Russell county, Virginia when it was considered the frontier. If your ancestors came through southwest Virginia this document is the history of your family. Contains information of specific families as well as the farmers, speculators, artisans, and preachers who resided there. Lots on the Indian battles that were a daily feature of life on the frontier. Names like Russell, Walker, Porter, Cowan, Houston, Boone, Montgomery, Fraley, Thompson, Anderson, Kilgore and 50 or so other "Scotch-irish" families make this an invaluable resourch for your family history. Cost: $25.00 I only post these offerings to a tiny fraction of the lists and only to those lists where your surnames are mentioned. After I make the offering I insubscribe because my e-mail box will fill up in about ten minutes. I am always on the Cowan and Wigton-Walker lists and you can e-mail me at cscunc@aol.com and ask any question you like. I will always attempt to answer your questions although it is unlikey I hold the key to who your great grandma was. If you are interested in the results of our trip to Donegal and Belfast please check the COWAN-L archives and you will see the posts we made during the last week or so. Thanks for your interest and I hope making this information available has helped some of you. I always enjoy getting e-mails from fellow researches. Also a big thanks to those of you who sent family information to us before our trip. It was appreciated and a special thanks to Alex Latta from Canada who turned us on to James Fleming. The trip would not have been the same without that piece of the puzzle. Regards, Robert Cowan 525 Harrogate Rd. Matthews, North Carolina 28105 (704)847-4081

Anita, I like your suggestions for alphabetizing all the family group sheets behind a descendancy chart. I think organizing is always a work in progress. I find that what worked for me a few years ago doesn't work for me now. I keep having to divide books, etc., and have about decided to do a notebook for each major family name!
