    2. Norm, Is there any chance that William Williams, 1731-1811, had a son named William b. ~1760, m. 1780 to Nancy Safewright, d. 1838 in Grayson Co. VA? I am researching this Williams and this is as far back as I have been able to find data. Bob

    3. A question about Eleazer Williams: Does anyone know who his father, Thomas Williams, married? What were the names of Thomas' siblings, if any? Did Eleazer get married and what was his wife's name? Did Eleazer have any siblings and did he have any children and what were their names? I would appreciate any help with this information. --- WILLIAMS-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > ATTACHMENT part 1 message/rfc822 > > WILLIAMS-D Digest Volume 02 : Issue 126 > > Today's Topics: > #1 [WILLIAMS] Morgan County, GA > [DEHucks@aol.com] > #2 Unidentified subject! 2. Sheri Chiodo
    3. I am trying to locate the parents of Luke Williams b August 5, 1776 in NC m. Mary "Polly" Shropshire in July 1799. Luke Williams was a Baptist preacher and a farmer, and resided about five miles west of Boonville, Cooper County Missouri. He is known as being the first preacher in Cooper County and served as one of the first County Commissioners of Cooper County MO. I believe that James Williams and Martha Murrell were his parents but this has not been proven and I cannot locate any information on this union. I descend from Luke's son William Savage Williams m. Julia Franklin Newsom 02/11/1848 in Caldwell County Missouri and their son John Williams b. 12/06/1856 m. Fannie Baker Estep. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I have hit a brick wall. Thank you Sheri Williams Chiodo

    2. OK! Let me try this with some more important details-Sorry for the confusion. I'm looking to see if there is a connection between Roger Williams (1603-1683) founder of Rhode Island and William Williams (1731-1811)-signer of the Declaration of Independance. Again, sorry for the confusion. Norm

    3. A very good source of info about this side of the family is a book called "The Un-Redeemed Captive" written by Yale prof John Demos. It tells the story of Eunice Williams capture and forced march to Montreal from Deerfield Massachusets and her subsequent life among the French and Mohawk, the times she lived in and her birth family history. Fascinating. I don't think it is out of print but if you can't find it I saw some copies at the Fort Ticonderoga gift shop. If anyone is researching this side I have info for you. Please email me. Thanks, Judith

    1. Re: [WILLIAMS] Roger/William
    2. Does anyone know if Roger Williams Line and William Williams Line are connected anywhere? Norm Norm, Roger did have two brothers that came to America as well, Robert who settled in Newport after leaving Providence, Rhode Island, and Sydrach who settled in Virginia. Also they were the cousins to Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England between the reigns of Charles I and Charles II. William Williams was one of the first to settle in Stonington, Connecticut and his son was the first European to die and be buried there after an accident in the field. Would this be the one to whom you refer? You can reach the Roger Williams Family Association through their website at http://www.rogerwilliams.org. They will be adding a four generational descendants file in the near future, I'm not sure when it will be up and running. Just check back from time to time. Hope this is of some help to you. Trish

    1. [WILLIAMS] Which Roger Williams
    2. A lister is is asking about a Roger Williams line. Presumably this is Roger Williams in the colonial era. He/She should be aware that there are at least two colonial Roger Williams families. There is the famous Baptist, Roger Williams of Rhode Island. Much has been written of him, and I would suggest scouring a few American type encyclopedias, as well using search engine www.google.net to try to find biographies/genealogies. There was another less famous Roger Williams of Northern Neck Virginia whose widow Joan/Jane (some say Frith, but this probably is incorrect) remarried twice after his death. Roger and Joan had two sons: Roger the younger and Shadrack. By implication, he also had a daughter Ruth Williams. Here are a few tidbits about this latter Roger Williams: ROGER WILLIAMS OF NORTHERN NECK VIRGINIA. WIR 3655 (ca. 1625 prob Eng-d. bef June 1677 Old Rappahannock Co., VA) Lived on TOTUSKEY CREEK [variant spellings]. Roger Williams of Northern Neck, VA is an ancestor of the Simpson-Kincheloe-Canterbury family of Caswell Co., NC, previously of Northern Neck, VA. His wife probably was Joan (or Jane) probably Chamberlyn (surname not proved). His conjectured daughter is Ruth Williams, wife of John Canterbury, as implied in documents other than his will. Refer to will of Lewis Loyd, her stepfather. Williams, Roger (1645-77) VA; m. Joane Frith. Landowner. (Mary Louise Marshall Hutton, SEVENTEENTH CENTURY COLONIAL ANCESTORS OF MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL SOCIETY COLONIAL DAMES XVII CENTURY, 1915-1975 (Ann Arbor, MI: 1976) (New Orleans PL Gen R 929.3 H98s, p. 116) (This surname for Joan is in question in 1998.) In 1664, Roger Williams purchased from William Barber 200 acres on the south ... branch of Totoskey Crk adj. Edward Lewis. (Ruth & Samuel Sparacio, ([OLD RAPPAHANNOCK COUNTY DEED BOOK 1656-1664, Part II, [McLean, VA: The Antient Press] p. 78) Other sections of the deed book indicate neighbors were James and Mary Samford, and later one Quintan Shereman. A John Simpson [spelled Sympson] and a Thomas Cheetwood purchased land in that county in 1664. The seller was John Chinley. References in later deed books ca. 1672 still refer to the land of Roger Williams on Totoskey creek. On 4 Mar 1672/3 (Capt.) John Hull and Eliz. Hull sold approximately 650 acres "235 thirds" to Roger Williams. The preceding document concerns a patent to John Hull which he received by will from Miles Ryly. The land was on the north side of Rap(idan - partly erased) River. Some of the lines mentioned were Henry Austin, Thomas Freshwater, Robert Sisson, Court House, Cat Path. You may want to search the online catalog of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City for family histories of these two Roger Williamses. A Dr. M Meek wrote me some time ago that he had deposited with the FH Library in SLC some genealogical papers pertaining to the Roger Williams of Virginia. I believe when I last checked they had been filmed. Here is the website for FHL: www.familysearch.org Go to the link to the catalog which is on the lower right. If you are near an LDS FHC, you can borrow the film, for a small fee, for a short time. Search for the author: M. Meek He is the compiler of the material for the Virginia Roger Williams. Dr. Meek suspects, but had not yet found very good proof, that Roger Williams of VA may be a nephew of the Roger Williams of Rhode Island. Dr. Meek seems to be a careful researcher. Also search for the surname Williams (a tough go)! I tried the subject search for Baptists in Rhode Island. There is a book but it has not been filmed. FHL in SLC does not permit its books to circulate, but perhaps your librarian can help you initiate an interlibrary loan. A nearby University or community college may have just the info you need in the reference section. It's worth a visit. Most colleges and Univs. do not want to admit they have genealogical material--it's there, but generally under local history, immigration, nobility, etc. Good luck. E.W.Wallace

    2. Dear Lister, Kendrick_@webtv.net wrote in part: My cousin Molly and I are researching our gg greatmother: Nancy Williams, b ? FL; d Sept 1872 in Alachua Co., FL. Response: Let's stop right there. I don't know anything about your family, but be extremely grateful when one of your common-surname ancestors married a spouse with a relatively unusual surname--such as Pendarvis. (I bet it's common in Wales, but I haven't got time to look--got to get to the post office before the postage rate goes up). Suggest you do this: Use the search engine www.google.com Type in quotation marks James Pendarvis I did this, and although some of the links don't seem to have anything to do with genealogy, at least one does. Perhaps this is your cousin of whom you speak--and if so, then you and I have struck out. But, if it is entirely a different person--you may have found a fellow Pendarvis researcher. Just for the fun of it, go to the LDS website at www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right. Type in Pendarvis when the tag Surname comes up. See if LDS has any family histories on Pendarvis. (Tons of them on the Williamses, I suppose. I have never looked.) Also, try the International Genealogical Index and see if Pendarvis is Welsh in origin. Any name, first or surname, which starts with a LL, such as Lloyd or Llewelwen (variant spellings) is in all probability a Welsh name. Hope you find your ancestors. Why did I think Alabama was an easy place to search? I have never searched there, but since, compared with the 13 colonies, it has a short history, there probably are more accessible records (aren't there?). Do you know that LDS has lots of CD-ROMs with the 1880 US census which has been transcribed (badly in some cases)? Call up your nearby LDS center and see if they have the CD-ROMs. Ask when they are open. Anybody living in 1872 most probably survived to 1880 and may appear on the 1880 census. If so, you are in luck! The 1880 census, as do some subsequent ones, ask each enumerated person: Where was your father born? Where was your mother born? We hope they knew the right answer. This 1880 census, taken a year before my great-grandfather died, got me to another state--which had plenty of records on that particular Williams family and linked them to a son in Kentucky! And to my GGF in Texas!!! E.W.Wallace who has three Williams lines!!!
