    1. [WILLIAMS] William Williams - Signer of Declaration of Independence
    2. S. Hamson
    3. Hi - I am new to the list and am wondering if anyone has the descendents of the William Williams from Connecticut who signed the Declaration of Independence. Family rumor has it that my great grandmother, Clarinda V. Williams, from Aroostook Co., Maine is related to him but I have been unable to make the connection. She was born about 1843 and married William Frances DeLaittre on Dec. 19, 1862 in Montecello, Maine. Hope someone can help. Susan

    1. [WILLIAMS] Benjamin & Martha (Harris) Williams of NC, TN
    2. Joyce Libes
    3. I'm new to the list. I'm researching the Benjamin & Martha "Patsy" (Harris) Williams of NC and TN lines. I would like to know if anyone has a copy of the deed or deeds Patsy Williams' father Isaac Harris (or his agents) made to the "heirs of Benjamin Williams" of Dickson Co. TN. Isaac Harris died late in 1807 in Halifax Co. NC or at least his will was probated there. He mentions daughters Patsy Williams and Elizabeth Williams. I'm not sure whether the deed to the heirs of Patsy and Benjamin Williams were done shortly after Isaac Harris' death or after daughter Patsy Williams died (about 1846 in TN). Benjamin died in 1816. I'm interested in Benjamin and Martha "Patsy" Williams' son Harris (born about 1790). My grandfather and great grandfather were both named Harris Benjamin Williams. Joyce (Williams) Libes

    1. [WILLIAMS] Library look ups
    2. Judith Loebel
    3. Dear Friends, When asking a library to do an obit or other look up it is a very nice thing to either send a few dollars with your mailed request or to send a donation after you have received the info. As you know almost all libraries have an operating budget that is pitiful and this little bit goes a long way towards not only good relations but also showing the staff- who are often underpaid or volunteers- that you appreciate the work they have done to help you in your quest for information. These look-ups are often over and above the things that librarians are really in the position to do, like check books in and out, teach computer skills, etc. I have been helped tremendously by librarians and as a volunteer have helped some people break down their brick walls. Don't let the librarians think you don't appreciate their hard work!

    1. [WILLIAMS] Lucy Searcy, Widow of Bartlett Searcy ca 1797
    2. Lucy Searcy, after she was widowed by Bartlett Searcy, formerly of Granville Co., NC, continued to live in Madison Co., KY in the late 1790s and perhaps later. Can anyone help me 1) confirm Lucy's maiden name, alleged to be Williams of Granville Co., NC 2) identify this Joseph Williams who married Lucy's daughter? This allegation of Lucy's maiden name appears, without documentation, in Alvahn Holmes's publication SOME DESCENDANTS OF FARRAR'S ISLAND (FHL film 1033635, Item 1). Lucy Searcy is characterized as mother of the bride (giving consent) for the marriage in Madison Co., KY of her daughter Sally Searcy to Joseph Williams 21 Mar 1796; Robert Searcy was bondsman. Joseph is suspected [only a hunch, you genealogists] to be a son of Henry Williams and his wife Elizabeth of Caswell Co. NC. Reasons for this suspicion: 1. Henry Williams's daughter and son-in-law Richard Ready-Money Oldham and his wife the former Ursley/Ursala Duke Williams [widow of Reuben Peoples] migrated to Madison Co. from Caswell Co. ca 1787 or somewhat later. 2. Caswell Co., NC Deed Bk J-108-09: Joseph Williams of Madison Co., KY to Andrew McCauley of Orange Co., NC, for $300, 280 A on Stoney Cr [Caswell Co.] being part of tract willed Joseph Williams by Henry Williams decd. 13 Sept 1795. NY: author published, 1934. First edition. Octavo (6.5 x 9.5), 294 & 314 pages, with top edges gilt. This is not a genealogy- it's a biography, but does have 94 pages of family ancestry. Clark Williams was related to Richard Williams of Welsh origin, who married Ruth Rogers at Newburyport, Mass in 1703. The biography starts with the Williams ancestry in the first 27 pages. The maternal Clark family ancestry is covered in the next 67 pages. The ancestry is all narrative. The table of contents is provided in scans below. 3. This is a book that is on auction at E-Bay under: Genealogy Williams. Posting it only because it list some names that connect, and a bit of information of this "Williams". Drummond, Josiah H. Samuel Williams, of Grafton, N.H. Fifth in Descent from Richard Williams, of Taunton (Mass). Portland (MA): Smith & Sale; Printers, 1899. First edition. Octavo, 20 pages. Richard Williams, born in 1606, was the first to arrive in America. He located in Taunton, Mass and became one of the town's earliest settlers and became so prominent that he was known as the "Father of the Town." He married Frances Dighton with whom he had a large family, whose descendants branched out from mostly Taunton and Grafton, New Hampshire. Some of the early allied Thompson families include: Walker; Hoyt; Hale; Barney; Whitford; Little; Finnimore; Bucklin; Riddle; Rogers; Tinkham; Wilson; Tucker; West; Case; Storer; Crane; Leach; Alden; Howard; Gile; Hathaway; Randlett; Tenney; Stevens; Caswell; Macey; Shaw; Bullock; Martin; Smith; Currier; Miller; Sanborn; Heath; Dodge; Rhodes; Storey; O'Brien; Tenney; and Dunlap. Paper is brittle with dust or shadow lines along the cover edges, otherwise this soft cover genealogy is in near fine condition. Sandy skscofield@sbcglobal.net

    3. Hello, I can't help you but I have had alot of success in getting local libraries to do obit lookups. I just call the local library where the person died and with the name and death date and it's often easy for them to do lookups. Some charge nothing and some charge a small fee but give it a try. I usually just look up on google.com for the library's address and phone number. I hope this is helpful. 1. [WILLIAMS] Robert Williams of NC (d. 1790) & Robert Williams of Mississippi Terri.(d 1836)
    2. And I'm not sure this will be of much help as you are probably already familiar with Maud Carter Clement's book "The History of Pittsylvania County". And while I don't usually consider books such as this as documented evidence, it still may offer clues and help someone else sort some of this out and come forward. On page 139, Clement wrote that Robert Williams and his brother Col. Joseph settled in North Carolina prior to the revolution, married sisters Sarah & Rebecca Lanier, daughters of Thomas Lanier, an early justice of Lunenberg County who later moved to NC (at this point, Clement quoted Wheeler's "Reminiscences of North Carolina" as her source). Clement went on to say that Sarah Lanier & Rob't Williams were married October 10, 1774 (marriage bond at Oxford, NC) and moved to Pittsylvania County, settled near Sandy Creek of Banister River. There he practiced law and served as Commonwealth Attorney for Pittsylvania and Henry counties. He died in 1790 and the inventory of his estate showed much silver, books, and elegance of living; he left no will but in 1799 there was a division of his estate as follows: To Col. John Williams & wife Elizabeth 617 acres incl. Manor Plantation on Sandy Creek / To Nathaniel W. Williams 1540 acres beginning on John White's line, taking in the mill / To Micajah Watkins & wife Sarah 240 acres and 1556 acres / To Patsy Williams 279 acres, the balance of 2866 acres land of the Manor Plantation, 147 acres, the mill tract 168 acres on Cascade Creek / To Fanny Williams 200, 296 and 790 acres. At the bottom of Clement's listing of the division of the estate is a note 'Patsy Williams married John Henry of Woodlawn'. I am researching the children of my 4th great grandparents William & Lucy Terry Williams of colonial Pittsylvania County. And my biggest stumbling block has been their son John. The Sandy Creek area is where some of my Williams ancestors lived. There is a marriage bond 7-16-1792 for a John Williams and Elizabeth Williams (R. Williams is noted as the father - but it is not clear of which one he is the father). I have not been able to prove so far that this is "my" John. And I don't know if this is the John & Elizabeth Williams refered to in the 1799 division of Robert Williams' estate. In your Bio #2 you mention this Robert Williams was a cousin of "John Williams and Lewis Williams". My John Williams did have a brother Lewis. But there were so many "Williams" - John and otherwise. If any of the above helps anyone out there, I'd love to hear about it. Sorting out all these Williamses will take another 20 years at least, I suspect.

    1. [WILLIAMS] journalist looking for Mayflower descendants- need by Oct.4th
    2. Dear list, I am following with a request from a fellow journalist - I seem to remember someone stating they had Mayflower roots. If someone could help her out with this request for ethnic connections to the Mayflower by Oct. 4th (she has a rush deadline and will not be able to use anything past that date) it would be great. She's a lovely lady. Please respond to her directly. Thanks so much. Rosie I'm doing a rush (by Friday) research job for a national magazine. They want to run a Thanksgiving Day cover showing a mix of people of many races who are descended from the passengers who arrived on Mayflower. (They can include people who are related by marriage.) I'll need to find the people, confirm that they're willing to be photographed for the cover, briefly pre-interview them to get a single, short quote (something along the lines of what Thanksgiving means to me or what it means to be an American this Thanksgiving), and of course get their permission to use their names and cities in the photo caption. Any ideas where or how I could find African-American, Asian, Indian (as in from India), or other non-Caucasian descendants (including descendants-by-marriage --- a person who married someone who was a descendant) of Mayflower passengers? << Reply to: Peggy at PJNoonan@aol.com

    1. [WILLIAMS] Robert Williams of NC (d. 1790) & Robert Williams of Mississippi Terri.(d 1836)
    2. Can someone on the list help me better identify either Robert Williams? The second featured Robert Williams was somewhat younger (d. 1836) than the first one (d. 1790) whose very brief sketch is given below Bio 1: Robert Williams (wife Sarah), formerly of Pittsylvania Co., VA and later of probably Surry Co., NC reportedly died intestate in 1790, and a division of his estate was made in 1799. The Robert Williams of Pittsylvania Co., according to a history of that county, removed with his brother Col. Joseph Williams to North Carolina (probably Surry Co.) prior to the Revolution. There he seemed to be in business with his brother-in-law, Robert Lanier, according to transcribed records of that county. The man whose biography is given below is not the Robert Williams of Pittsylvania Co., VA (wife Sarah Williams nee Lanier, dau of Thomas Lanier of Granville Co., NC). The following is taken from the online Political Graveyard: Williams, Robert (1766-1836) Son-in-law of Joseph Winston; second cousin by marriage of Matthew Clay; brother of Marmaduke Williams; cousin of John Williams and Lewis Williams; brother-in-law of Louis L. Winston and Fountain Winston. Born in Prince Edward County, Va., October 30, 1766. Member of North Carolina state senate, 1792-95; U.S. Representative from North Carolina, 1797-1803 (3rd District 1797-99, at-large 1799-1803); Governor of Mississippi Territory, 1805-09; candidate for Delegate to U.S. Congress from Mississippi Territory, 1811. Died near Monroe, Ouachita Parish, La., January 30, 1836. Interment at a private or family graveyard, Ouachita Parish, La. See also: congressional biography. I welcome information on either Robert Williams, particularly the parentage of each. That way, I can sort out who is who. E.W.Wallace
