    1. [WILLIAMS] Looking for Williams with Ckerokee ancestry
    2. Hi Keith - I don't know if any of the actual rolls have been put up in cyberspace but some of the indexes have. If you go to the URL below, you can view the index for the Guion Miller (Eastern Cherokee Roll of 1909) and possibly other rolls as well. It's a National Archives site. The fly in the ointment though is that the names in the index are the names of the persons who filed the applications - as far as I've been able to find out, there is no index of ancestors' names. So you have to look for some of your ancestor's descendants who may have filed applications. Then you can view the applications on microfilm at many of the regional National Archives facilities throughout the country. Good luck! Maybe some other listers can tell us where else the applications can be viewed. ~Jane http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/arc_info/native_americans_guion_mill er_index.html

    3. According to a cousin, my great-grandmother Lucy Luizer Holland Hollis was a full blooded Cherokee, but all the records indicate that she could not have been. My great-grandfather's mother however was likely to have been at least part Cherokee. Gg-grandmother Nancy Williams that was born ca. 1834 in GA. She married Jessie Hollis in Morgan Co. GA during the the year of 1848. Jesse died around 1872 and Nancy allowed the children to be placed into foster homes. Several of their descendants had very dark skin and other Cherokee features. I am trying to determine who was port Cherokee. Does anyone know of a good online source for the Dawe's and other Rolls? Are their any Williams on the list who are part Cherokee? 2. My inquiry is medical. Is there anyone in the Johnson or Williams lineage that has this deformity in their line? In our family there has been two baby girls born without one hipsock formed. The first, my niece born in 1959 and the second a great niece born in 1973. Family members think this is from the Johnson side. My grandmother was a Johnson and married a Williams. I would appreciate hearing if anyone else has had this in their families at any time. Thanks, Helen

    2. Carl - Yes, attachments ARE blocked by Rootsweb on the list. But e-mail sent to individual email addresses on the list are NOT under the control of Rootsweb....thus, the listers receiving email especially with "WILLIAMS" in the subject line - AND (more importantly)- WITH AN ATTACHMENT - are well advised to NEVER open those attachments. I have received a few myself over the last 2 weeks and apparently a lot of folks on the list have also. Listers - PLEASE be careful. NOW - Let us please get back to the subject of Williams genealogy! ~Jane in Western Mass.

    1. [WILLIAMS] Looking for Clueless Williamses
    2. Many (probably newbies) Williams listers are searching for Williamses who were alive for the 1790 through 1850 censuses. Here is a tool for you to consider using in order to facilitate finding those ancestors who MAY have appeared in those census years. There is a consolidated US census index which is available at probably all LDS family history centers--it is called Accelerated Indexing System and is on hundreds of microfiche. To learn about this valuable tool, called AIS, which most professionals use when beginning work for a new client, go to the LDS website: www.familysearch.org Go to the tab labeled SEARCH. On the left side of the screen is the word Subject. Click on that. If the letter A (beginning of alphabet) is not already on screen, click on the A at the top. The very first item under A is Alamanac [as in Farmer's Almanac] Then the first item to the right is Accelerated Indexing System Item #30970 Read about this and print it out, or copy and paste to a word processor and put it in your research notebook. (Oh, yes, how many people come to a library with NO paper and NO pen! You know better, don't you?) Study the information in this very brief description. Then call your nearby LDS center and ask for their days of opening--and hours also. Then ask whether they have AIS on hundreds of microfiche. (If you don't know where an LDS center is near your home, stay on the LDS website and go to the lower right. There should be a link to a list of over 3,500 worldwide centers--maybe more, by now.) If you know where your Williamses were in 1850, then start with that Search, which I believe may be No. 5 (I always read the instructions which are on the file cabinet where the fiche are filed). Look at all the Williamses (wow!) and find the appropriate county or State in which they were living at that time. Then move backwards in time to the earlier Searches. Please know that there is a high error rate in AIS--duplications, omissions, misspellings (maybe made by the census-taker - some left out the second L in Williams), etc. but if you find a clue to your ancestor's whereabouts, then you will forgive the high error rate. Some genealogists find the migration routes of their ancestors by using AIS. Try it, and learn to use it for ALL your new searches. A descendant of three early Virginia Williams lines (no, not your line) E.W.Wallace
