1. [WILLIAMS] 1880 Census on Line
2. Dear Williams Listers I thought everyone knew this by now. The 1880 US census is online at www.familysearch.org Be aware that there are errors and you may have to be creative in your research. And frequently Williams is misspelled--can you imagine? The second L may be left out, or the final s may be dropped. Try a wild card (an asterisk) once in a while in your search. Not only did the original census-taker make errors in spelling, but apparently some of the current-day subscribers had difficulty in reading the old handwriting (something genealogists contend with all the time). Search for not only your Williamses but also all the neighbors, who probably were their cousins, their in-laws, or some relationship. Be aware that this census asks for the birthplace of the parents of each enumerated person. This may help you search another state!!! My great-grandfather who had left Kentucky before 1845, via Arkansas and Mississippi, arrived in Texas ca 1852. He died in 1881, but just before he died he told the census-taker that his father was born in North Carolina. This valuable information helped me confirm some KY linkages which I had already suspected were from North Carolina. When I got into the NC records, I could get back two generations in Virginia--to 1716 land patent. Scour those censuses, and try to verify with probates, deeds, tax records, and all that detective work you are looking forward to!! E.W.Wallace

1. [WILLIAMS] Williams of Scott Co., IN
2. I have a brick wall. I am trying to locate on the 1870 Census for Scott County, or possibly an adjoining county, any information concerning Hezekiah Williams and his wife Mary Ann (Harris). Because of a family tale and suspecting them to be the Grandparents of the children I will be mentioning, I need to find out if there is a listing for any of the following children living with Williams in this area: William F. Williams born Abt 1862 Evansville IN Vicie (Victoria ?) Williams born abt 1864 IN John L. Williams born 1866 (living with Sands family, 1880 Census Scott Co, Vienna Twp, IN) And one other child (possible Joseph) Their mother was Sarah Jane Williams. The father, name not yet determined between George F. Williams or Francis Marion Williams, died in 1867, location unknown. The family story is that the children went to live with the paternal grandparents. Also, there is a listing for a Mrs. Sarah Jane Williams (aunt) in the cemetery records of Vanderburgh County, IN, Calvert Chapel Cemetery. She is buried next to a Julia A. Williams, wife of James Williams. I would like to know if anyone is related to this Sarah Jane Williams, what her relation was to James and Julia Williams. I have found a James Williams buried with another wife next to John L. Williams, listed above in Scott Co., IN. Please write me if you see any connection at medough@aol.com. Mary

3. Hi list, just to add some more comment to our griping sessions,,,this may help some one...be careful about buying CD's from Ancestry...I bought the OR death records CD thinking it had complete death records,...it was just an index like you can find on line. It did have a spouse every once in awhile, but no other info, just name date and cert. #. They advertised a money back guarantee...no such luck...they said once I opened it they could not tke it back.! BUT! how else do you know it does not contain the info you sere looking for? So be careful, I guess the best way to find out is to call them. I bought the CD because I had found several names on graves when I went to OR. this summer.I had to pay $35.oo for my grt grd mother's death cert., (which was not on the CD). It does not same just an index, it says records! I thought I was being smart and buying the CD to get the same info and save money. I had stopped buying CD's from FTM because they never seemed to have ALL the info and another CD was always needed. So I decided to do it the hard way and I think the cheapest!

1. [WILLIAMS] CHARLES WALTER WILLIAMS from England
2. Pat Gillard
3. Have recently joined the list in search of our elusive CHARLES WALTER WILLIAMS, Dental Surgeon born in Dover, Kent, England. The 1881 British census lists Charles, his parents and two siblings under the surname WILLIAM (the "s" having been missed in the transcription) giving the following details: 10 Eton Grove, Lee, Kent, England CHARLES W., head, married, age 45, occupation Head Cutter, born Dover, Kent, England LOUISA, wife, married, age 43, born London, Middlesex, England CHARLES W., son unmarried, age 17, occupation Dental Surgeon, born Dover, Kent, England LAURA C., daughter, age 12, Scholar, born Dover, Kent, England HENRY, son, age 10, Scholar, born Greenwich, Kent, England Although CHARLES WALTER WILLIAMS (dental surgeon) was living in Ulverston, Lancashire, England for the 1901 census, I have not been able to find his parents or siblings as each attempt continues to return "too many results". Is anyone else researching this particular branch of WILLIAMS from England? Pat Gillard Ontario, Canada

I knew better but just didn't get it changed. I am passionate about my research and don't want to lead any one down the wrong path. It is hard enough for some of us to find the right one for ourselves. In my case I cannot find any Bible Records,Wills,Deeds,Letters of Administration. All I have is census records, birth and death records, obits,Funeral Home Records and a few Civil War Records and Land Grants. In researching one of my families I discovered that my great grand mother at one time had a family Bible from Tn. of my Smith relatives. A new found cousin had a letter her grand mother who wrote that my great grand mother had the family Bible. She died in 1961 and I started my research in 1997 after I lost bother parents. Sad to say I cannot find that Bible now even though she had been cared for by one of my Aunts. It would be wonderful if I could find and keep that Bible. I am closing out on this so we can get back to our research. Bobbye Williams Davis Researching Williams in Al. Ga. Ms. La. 3. Hi, I'm new to this list and live in the UK. So I may be putting myself out on a limb here but: I am trying to find infomation about Elizabeth Williams, living in Plymouth Borough, Luzerne County Pa in 1880 census. She appears on page 13 or enumeration Dist 148, or folio 425 A. If anyone have information about her I will be grateful. I am keen to know if the Lizzie Parry listed as a servant is my great grandmother Elizabeth Parry who is not with her family for the 1880 census in Slatington, Penna. Nov 18-21st I will be in Llandudno researching my great-great grandmother Elizabeth Williams, daughter of Richard Williams and Elizabeth Morris, born in Llandudno but married in Brooklyn, NY. And this is the bit where I may be inviting more than I want but I am willing to look up Williams families who are known to be from Llandudno area while I am seeking my ancestors. So if you know or reasonably suspect your Williamses come from Llandudno Parish in North Wales (Caernarvonshire) than send me their details, as much as you have, and I will try to find them for you. Oh and warn me if your family has a history of patriarchal naming, so I know if I am looking for a Willam...... or a .......Williams. Sorry I can't do all of Caernarvonshire, but I am also looking up Parrys and Owen families from the slate quarry districts. in friendship, Tina Helfrich tinahelfrich@blueyonder.co.uk ***************************************

1. [WILLIAMS] Copyright
2. Angela Williams
3. Hi I have deleted most of the previous e-mails on this subject but the last few caught my eye and I hope I can clear up a few things regarding copyright. I am a 3rd year law student. I have a website that has the results of the genealogy research that I've been doing for the past 2 years. When I started posting this information, I did a little of my own research. Keep in mind that I am not an attorney. Here's what I found out: 1. Names and dates are NOT copyright protected. This makes sense if you think about what would happen if your name and birthdate were printed somewhere...if it were copyrighted you couldn't use that information without requesting permission. It doesn't matter WHO finds these names and dates...whether a layperson like myself or a certified genealogist. 2. INTERPRETATIONS of data potentially is copyrighted. For example, if you wrote a book about the life and times of one of your ancestors based on research you conducted using interviews, diaries, newspaper articles, etc. THAT would most likely be copyrighted. However, writing this book doesn't mean another person can't use the same newspaper articles and records and create an INTERPRETATION of their own as to what this ancestor's life was like. Think about all the various biographies on famous people and perhaps that will make this clearer. Information from my website was put on rootsweb by someone else. I am related to the Hyson family of Baltimore and I have info. posted about them on my website. Imagine my surprise when I found this same info. posted on rootsweb. The guy who posted it gave me credit for the information but he really didn't have to do that. He could have pulled the same birth, baptismal, death, and marriage records that I had and written the same hard facts. Sincerely, Meriah Williams

3. Hi Mary When I saw the surnames you're researching, I thought maybe you could help me. I have a Hattie Williams, born in Bedford County, TN born Feb. 28, 1870, married T.M. Bobo August 22, 1894. Do you have anything on these two? I know they were Texas and/or Oklahoma, they sent photos back from Texas, and I have photos from Hugo, OK, but not sure if they're Hattie's descendants or not. I do have a photo of their gravesite, but nothing on the back to tell where it is. Any help is appreciated Debi debip@bellsouth.net

3. Very simple -- there are those of us who love genealogy and are genuinely trying to leave the family history to our descendants; and on the other hand, there are those who want to "be the firstest with the mostest!" These are the 'genealogists' who rush to submit every little detail, whether correct or not, in order to see their names in print on the internet.
