I am new to the list. Will post my interest. I am looking for a g-great grandmother. I think she was Elizabeth Williams. The Elizabeth I am looking for was first married to Adouijah Little and had Solomon, Jehu, Sally and Phenehas. She was then married to John Ard 31, January 1830 at Washington Co., IN and they had Betsy Ann, Deborah and John. In the guardianship book of Washington Co., IN on Feb. 13, 1838 George Williams, William R. Williams and William Williams were appointed guardian of Solomon G., Jehu, Sally and Phenehas Little, Betsy Ann, Deborah and John Ard III. At the same time Thomas and Reuben Ard were appointed guardians of Eli and Nancy Ard. I descend from John Ard III and would like to have more information on Elizabeth and hope I am right assuming her maiden name was Williams. Dorothy
Shedevilady@aol.com wrote: Hi List: I am new to this list and I thought I would post my interest. I am researching Williams from Bristol, England. I have a Nathaniel Williams that married a Louisa Sage in 1854. He is a Shop Keeper, Ships Captain and ship owner. I have him with only one son at this time, Charles Edwin James that married an Alice Jane Fearnley in 1881, in Bristol. I have Charles with daughter Louisa that married Charles William Down in 1903 in Bristol. Would love to hear from anyone researching this family or that might have any information on them. Bev. in Canada Response to Bev in Canada, Dear Bev: What you really need is a guide to doing research in Britain--not the US. Have you studied the guide the Latter Day Saints put out about doing English research? It is online at www.familysearch.org The links are generally on the opening page. And there are lots of other goodies, including the catalog for the giant library at Salt Lake City (on the lower right). Were I you, I would study the research outline for England, which is online. BUT if your Williamses came directly to Canada and not to the US, then you want to begin with Canadian research, probably starting with Canadian censuses, then any land records, any naturalizations, and ship passenger lists. I have not done Canadian research, so you are on your own. I do know, however, that most of the censuses of the US, of Canada (those which have been released) and of United Kingdom are on film and can be borrowed from the Fam History Library in Salt Lake City through your local LDS center. There must be a few in Canada. If not, you may have to travel to an adjoining US county--or save your pennies and go to Salt Lake City, which has a whole floor devoted to British records--films, fiche (many of the censuses are on fiche), maps, reference books, microfilm readers, copiers, and, best of all, experts at the reference desk. They are the ones who frequently compile the Research guides for all the US states, for England, for Scotland, for Ireland (tough to search), for all the Northern European countries, and for many other countries around the world. By the way, the 1881 British census is online at the above URL. Again, go to the URL I have cited for you. Explore every link--you will find forms, etc. Also, when you have done your Canadian research (or US, if that is the case), then get acquainted with the British records. If your man was a sea captain and particularly a ship owner, there are bound to be records on him at the Public Record Office in Richmond (near Kew Gardens) to the west of London. But start with what you know, and move backwards in time--very slowly--particularly with a name like Williams!!! Best of luck to you. William Lee Simpson, Jr. asked about the above-named couple. I do not have time to do any research now on the couple. However, I know a little about the Langston family of the Tar River area of old Granville Co., NC. I believe, but have not done a lot of research, that they may have migrated to NC from colonial Surry Co., VA. I suspect the Williamses of that area around the Tar River also came from Surry Co. I base this on the research of my Rose-Langston-Washington families of Knap of Reeds area (near Orange Co., NC). Rose and Washington were intermarried, and research seems to show that their parents were either from Isle of Wight or Surry Co., VA. The wife of William Rose was Amy Langston, as implied in Rose's will cited below, in which he names his brother-in-law James Langston. Amy married two times after the death of William Rose. At least one of her sons--Frederick--migrated after the Revolution to what is now Putnam Co., GA, and his father-in-law, William Washington was in the adjoining Georgia Co.--Hancock, I believe. Perhaps the citations given in this brief sketch will lead you to other information about Thomas Williams and his wife Rebecca Langston. Submitted by E.W.Wallace, a Rose-Washington descendant WILLIAM ROSE II. (ca 1729 prob VA-ca 1768 NC) WIR00068. A very well documented biography of William Rose is found in Eunice Brooks Freese, WILLIAM ROSE OF SURRY CO., VA, and will not be repeated here. Only added information will be presented. See biography of Thomas Rose for some land transactions in Granville District, Colonial North Carolina, involving both Thomas and son William or one or the other, beginning ca. 1752. Granville Co. was formed 1746 of Edgecombe Co. William Rose appears on the 1750 tax list of Granville Co., Jonathan White's list. His father Thomas Rose, Sr. with 2 tithables appears on the same list. It is assumed from this list that William Rose was at least of legal age and presumably had land (not proved). (Ge Lee Corley Hendrix, "The Inhabitants of Granville County, NC, 1746, 1750," NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY JOURNAL, V. 8 [Feb 1982], p. 29) William Rose and his associates, Ephraim Merrit and William Washington, all appear on a Muster Roll of the Regiment of Colonel William Eaton, Granville Co., NC Oct 8, 1754, in Captain Andrew Hampton's Company. Also in Captain Hampton's Company were William Williams, Serjeant, and John Williams, Corporal. (The latter two men are probably the sons of John Williams II, formerly of Goochland Co, VA (qv) of Nutbush Creek area of Granville Co., NC, but this has not been proved as Jan 2003.) (Murtie June Clark, COLONIAL SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH 1732-1774, p. 727) At Halifax on 9 Sep 1763, both William Rose and Thomas Rose received grants from the agents of Lord Granville. These appear consecutively in Granville Co. Deed Bk H, page 70 for William Rose and page 70-71 for Thomas Rose. William Rose's grant was for 300 acres for 27 pds. Virginia money. It was near Kemp Creek & Nap of Reeds Creek. Thomas Rose's grant was for 404 acres of land for 24 pds. Virginia money and it was near Nap of Reeds Creek, Townsend's line and John Walker's land. (Timothy W. Rackley, GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA DEEDS, 1763-1766 [Kernersville, NC: Published by author, 1999], pp. 87 and 88.) William Rose owned land in Edgecombe Co. (part of his inheritance?) or had removed to Edgecombe Co., NC by 1764, so indicated by Eunice Brooks Freese, compiler of a history of the Rose family of this area. Warren Co., NC Deed Bk A-49: Thomas Mann to William Rose, both of Edgecombe Co. 12 Aug 1764. 40 pds. VA money for 640 A., an Earl Granville Grant 1 Dec 1760. Wit: James Drake, Asia Drake, Isom Wheless. Ack: Nov. Court 1764, Ben McCulloch, CC. Reg: 10 Jan 1765, Sugan [Sugar?] Johnson, P.R. William Rose's abstracted will indicates that by the time of his death, he had accumulated a modest estate, or perhaps a handsome one for the time and place. Granville Co. NC unrecorded will-page 54. [Written] Dec 1, 1768 - proved Jan. court 1769- William Rose wills to son Frederick Rose 300 acres on Reeds creek, 6 head of cattle, and 3 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to my son William Rose, my lower tract on Nap of Reeds creek known as "Elwoods," 6 cattle, 4 sows and pigs when he is 21 years old; to son Howel Rose, all land whereon I now live after his mother's death, she to live and use it for her lifetime; to daughter Sarah Williams, 10 pds; to daughter Elizabeth Rose, 40 pds. when she is 21 years old or married; to daughter Winneyfred Rose, a negro woman, 5 cattle now at Robert Sorriels when she is 21 years old or married; to my wife Amy Rose, 2 negroes, household furniture, livestock, for her lifetime and, at her death, to be sold and money to my son Howel Rose, with exception of setting up Frederick and William with enough of pewter, tools, etc., etc. Exrs: wife Ame Rose, brother-in-law James Langston. Wts: James Langston, James Willis, Jean Langston. (Zae Hargett Gwynn, ABSTRACTS OF THE WILLS AND ESTATE RECORDS OF GRANVI LLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, 1746-1808 [Rocky Mount, NC: Joseph W. Watson, 1973], p. 22) Comment: I suggest you try to interlibrary loan some of these books, but Timothy Rackley's books are so new that it is doubtful many libraries have acquired his books, outside of North Carolina. He has a new book of abstracted Granville Co. wills. If you want his e-mail address, e-mail me. E.W.Wallace
Hi, Looking for information on any Richard Williams of Northampton, NC ca. 1820's and his wife Martha Unknown. Believe him to be the father of Anthony T. "Tom" Williams b. abt 1830, died I believe at Shiloh, married Margarette Lacy Eddins March 27 1850 in Jackson, Madison Co., TN. Believe Anthony also had a sister Caroline b. 1828 in Northampton, NC, who was md. to a Samuel S. Sykes who lived and died in Jackson, Madison Co. TN. Children of Anthony and Margarette were Lewis Eddins William (my ancestor) and Ella Kate Williams. Anything on this family in Northampton would be appreciated. Thanks, Becky Pacey
I received several questions because of the way I worded the last sentence in my "quest" for Mary Ann Williams. My original: ELMIRA G SPENCER b. 1845, d. Nov 7 1933, is daughter of Mary Ann and wife of WORTHINGTON CHAUNCEY WILCOX. Clarification: ELMIRA G SPENCER was married to WORTHINGTON CHAUNCEY WILCOX and that MARY ANN WILLIAMS was ELMIRA's mother, ATWOOD SPENCER was ELMIRA's father. Sorry for any undue frustration.
