Dorothy, You make a good point. That is one of the things about the Alston & Williams families, they both used those Joseph John combinations in their families. I am a descendant of the Samuel Williams who died in 1791 in Warren Co., the son of Samuel who died in 1753-54. That Samuel never married, but he kept a slave mistress by the name of Crese, with whom he had children and he freed them upon his death, asking his Alston relatives to help them attain that status, which they did in 1798. The family, however, was given the surname of "Green", by the General Assembly. Deloris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy C. Do you have a time frame on this Josiah Williams? My Josiah also had a son Josiah, but I show him as having died in MI. I didn't find a Joseph. Kay On Tue, 27 Sep 2005 13:07:44 -0400 "Dorothy C. I think what Dorothy was talking about is the fact that the name Elihu Williams was the subject of several messages a few months ago. I remember it also, so I did a search at the Williams Mailing List Archives at Rootsweb and found the thread. The following is the link to it, and if for some reason it doesn't work for you, go to the "Search the Williams Archives" feature at Rootsweb, and key in the name of "Elihu Williams", which will give you the results I found: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/isearch2 Deloris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy C. To Louis and the rest of the listmembers- as my NY Williams info is very specific and a tenuous connection at best I really would like to hook up only with those who have a specific interest in the one family I am looking at! If I placed ALL of the Williams info I have- most of which is out there in the public anyways- the list would be very clogged for a while! I have posted to the list at various times the info I am seeking. Once more into the breach I guess! Looking for desc of: ROBERT WILLIAMS of Roxbury Mass Specifically, desc of STEWART BEACH WILLIAMS and wife JULIET MERRITT RIPLEY WILLIAMS Stewart was born in the Saginaw Michigan area approx 1820's and Juliet was born in New York 16 August 1838. Julliet's family migrated to Michigan circa 1850's. Juliett and Stewart had two children: GARDINER STEWART WILLIAMS CHARLES HERBERT (BERT) WILLIAMS (Adopted) It appears that the children and grandchildren of Gardiner Williams made there homes in New York City. HARRIET WILLIAMS WAITE had children, would like to be in touch with any rellies. Bert was married to a MATTIE (Matty) FOYCE, unknown if they had children JULIET had a sister SARAH JANE RIPLEY who married CHARLES FRASER in Michigan They had several children, those I am pretty sure lived to adult hood were: STEWART FRASER born circa 1876 SARAH IONE FRASER MORTLAND who lived in Ocala Florida after her mother died when she was 2. Summered in White CReek New York until her death. I am pretty sure she had no children, however any info about her or her family or husbands family is always welcome. If any one has any info on these folks I would be happy to hear and will be happy to share with all!
There is a Josiah Williams in Sampson Co., NC witness to a deed to Joseph Williams but I don't know anything about his background or where he belongs in the Williams line. This is not the only time a Josiah Williams is found in that area even though records with that name are scarce. Dorothy C. I too, noticed the unequal proportion of Williams from the south, and assumed that's why I've not been able to find any more info on mine in PA. Susannah Williams, 1837-1864, born, died, and buried in Clarion Co, PA. A cousin, of some removal, met on the web, told me that her father was Josiah Williams, 1807-1870. My Morgan Williams is from Wales and settled in Allegheny Co., PA. Someone found some census and have found my great grandmother Ida May or Jennie Williams. The obit has her as Jennie.. But I have no info on Morgan so have no clue where to start looking for him. Some Williams like others (Morrison, Brewers, etc) are hard to find. I'm also looking forward to learning the name of the book on the Williams families of Stewart County. Am wondering if some of the Williamses of Stewart Co TN didn't come there from NC in the same migration that brought Reuben Biggs and his wife Sally. I believe Sally was the Sarah Williams who was named as a daughter in the 1792 will of James Williams in Beaufort Co NC . James had "other children" not named in the will, as well as a daughter Nancy Jolley. James' father, named in the will, was Thomas Williams. The 1796 will of Thomas Williams of Beaufort Co names his grandchildren. James' children may be among them. The grandchildren, according to an abstract, were Luke, Cansaday, Bertimos(?), Lettice or Lennice, Elizabeth and Winifred Williams, and Salley Biggs. Kedar and Reuben Biggs and James Williams were executors. Reuben and Sally's daughter gave two of her sons the middle names of Williams and Alston, which makes me think there may be a connection to the Samuel Williams - Elizabeth Alston family mentioned at http://209.190.235.73/genes/db/browse.cfm/ID/17828 . I'd like to hear from anyone who may be able to tie Thomas Williams of Beaufort Co into the Alston-Williams family of Edgecombe Co. I have no details on Thomas beyond those given in his will, which showed his wife's name at that time as Anna. In searching Warren Co., NC Williams records be careful of the John or Joseph names. The references I have seen of the son of Samuel Williams and Elizabeth Alston has always referred to him John Joseph Williams. I think this is to distinguish him from so many other John or Joseph Williams names in that area at the same time. After the death of Samuel Williams, Elizabeth Alston, his widow, married Richard Burt and at that point gave her sons, Samuel, Solomon, William and John Joseph their inheritances. Dorothy C. No, Kay, we are not on the Williams mailing list as a group. I think I am the only one. We are researching the lineage of Joseph Williams m Martha Parrott/Perritt and the first records found for him are in 1782 in Duplin Co., NC and he died in Anson Co., NC July 6, 1825. There are postings of his father being Joseph Williams and his mother Mary Mewborn but we have not been able to prove that. I do have the will of Joseph Williams posted on the Williams site and his descendants. I have been in touch with Adrian Williams, administrator, a number of times and update information as records are found. Joseph Williams was a Rev. War patriot and I have copies of his military record. My husband was Robert Haywood White, son of Charlie Haywood White and Pearl Hammond of Chesterfield, SC descendants of Thrashley White b 1820 who lived in Chesterfield Co., SC all his life. The ancestry of Thrashley has not been found so we don't know the origin of that family. Two or three legends have circulated; one being that he came over from Ireland during the potato famine and his name was Parsons and he changed it to White. Dorothy C. In a previous posting about the Williams family of Warren County, North Carolina, it brought to mind an old site I came upon years ago with abstracts of Bible Records from that County. I checked it out and it still works. Here is the link which does feature the Williams, Alston, Kearney, and other families who were from Warren County: http://www.lofthouse.com/warren/bibles/query002.htm Deloris Williams
Thomas, If your John Williams was born in Warren Co.,NC, then he undoubtedly belonged to the vast Williams clan there. Most of that family descended from the Edgecombe Co. Williams family of Samuel Williams who died abt 1753 in Edgecombe. Many members of that Williams family married into the Alston, & Kearney lines of Warren & Halifax. They also had the habit of naming their children names like Samuel, William, John, Solomon & Joseph, and a combination of Joseph John. I have done some research on the line some time ago but haven't put it into a database yet, however, there is a wonderful genealogy of the line at Ray Gurganis' website, where he even supplies abstracts of the documents. If you've never visited it here is the link to the Samuel Williams family: http://209.190.235.73/genes/db/browse.cfm/ID/17828 The homepage is: http://209.190.235.73/ The site allows you to do searches, too. Good Luck. Kay, a group of us have been on an in-depth Williams research and yes, the name Elihu Williams was found on records but it will take a little time to go back and research those records. James Riley is a familiar name but it is in my Clontz lineage. When I can find that Elihu Williams information I will post it, He is not connected (to our knowledge) to my line but among all the deeds and wills we found in NC. Dorothy C. White [email protected] 804.795.4296 -----Original Message----- From: N & K Chestnut [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 12:04 AM To: Dorothy C. White Subject: Question - North to South Migration Pattern? For WILLIAMS Hey, don't knock the south. Those Williams knew God's country when they saw it. A good many landed in the north and migrated south. And it looks like southern Williams descendants are more actively searching than our northern counterparts. Hi Dot, Dot, do you have any personal ancestral example of a WILLIAMS landing in the north but migrating into the south? 1) My dau. in-law has a WILLIAMS early in the north. I think I have pretty good details on that line. 2) My father has a WILLIAMS in the south; but that line has been terribly difficult to figure out. Twenty years to get from James Perry WILLIAMS to James Riley WILLIAMS to Elihu WILLIAMS. Six to eight years now trying to build a case for siblings and parents of Elihu WILLIAMS. This year I entered my brother's DNA into the WILLIAMS DNA project. We have a pretty good match with a WILLIAMS line that spent several generations in TN. I thought our line came from KY. into IL. The other line thinks his WILLIAMS came out of N.C. into TN. Elihu's wife's line goes back to Wake Co., N.C. I am still puzzling over my WILLIAMSes. And of course, they seem to join up with some other common names, such as THOMPSON. What if my WILLIAMS &/or THOMPSON lines were Quakers, does that set up a north to south migration pattern? Kay (Williams) Chestnut
Yes, I would like to know, too. My Newborn Williams left Anson Co., NC before 1830 and died in Weakley Co., TN after 1850. We don't know who his family was nor much about his except he was in the McClain household before he died. Dorothy C.
