    3. Ellen Do you have any idea of the name of your William Williams wife? There were so many with that name, it might be easier to sort through them with a wife's and/or child's name associated with him. I don't see any wills for anyone with that name around 1813, so I assume there was none filed. Do you have a date for your Philip Williams? I found a will abstract for one as follows: "Abstracts of Wills Warren County, North Carolina, 1845-1902" - #595 - PHILIP WILLIAMS of Warrenton Township - 2 July 1898 - Sept Ct 898 - Willbook 51/pg.551 Wife RACHEL and my daughter AGNES - all my goods to hold jointly as long as my wife lives, and at her deat, AGNES may have the full share. To my wife and daughter AGNES- the northerly part of my farm, adj. the old spring, the hill on the Grove Hill road, and BRINKLEY. Son GEORGE WASHINGTON- the rest of my farm south of the part given my wife and daughter, containing 100 acres. Ex. my heirs Wit: D.F. CRINKLEY, ANDRE CRINKLEY (Probate indicates GEORGE W. WILLIAMS qualified as exr.) #596 - REUBEN N. WILLIAMS - 9 June 1883 - Feb Ct 1888 -Willbook 51, pg. 285 - To my son REUBEN and my daughters AMY and SUSAN - 100 acres to be set out to include the mansion house. Daughters AMY and SUSAN WILLIAMS - bed of their choice, cow, etc. My remaining estate to be divided into equal shares among the balance of my children, and MARY SMILEY's children are to have one share. Ex: friend JOHN G. BULLOCK Wit: JOHN G. BULLOCK, JOHN H. FLEMING (Probate indicates HARRY CAWTHORNE, JAMES H. BULLOCK and JOHN W. EVANS swore to the handwriting of JOHN H. FLEMING, now deceased. The estate included 230 acres of land. Heirs were REUBIN WILLIAMS, AMY WILLIAMS, SUSAN WILLIAMS, the children of MARY SMILEY, ROBERT WILLIAMS, JOHN WILLIAMS, RICHARD WILLIAMS, PHILL WILLIAMS, MRS. ROBERT JONES and MICHAEL WILLIAMS.) Does this look like yours? 1. FW: [WILLIAMS] New York' Williams Family??? and the sugar chest mystery
    2. Dorothy C. White
    3. WE think this is a society on the move, don't we? Well, it is an eye opener to find how our ancestors loaded their wagons with family and earthly goods, bade family and friends farewell and traipsed around the country in the early days. Travel by ship was common from the north to southern ports. Baltimore, Norfolk, Wilmington, Charleston and Savannah were busy places. That was the easiest way south. Dorothy C. 1. A Williams Family Book at Heritage Quest
    2. Deloris Williams
    3. I was researching some names through Heritage Quest earlier today, and happened upon some Williams info in a book entitled "The Battle Book, A genealogy of The Battle Family in America" by Herbert Bemerton Battle, published in Montgomery, Alabama 1930, by Paragon Press. I will put some of that info in a separate message. While I was at it, I became curious to see if there was anything else at the site for Williams in New York, since there has been so much discussion about it, and I think I hit paydirt for some of you Williams researchers. This may be the book that was the subject of a discussion earlier this month about a Williams family book at Ebay. The book is called " The Genealogy an History of the Family of Williams in America, More Particularly the Descendants of Robert Williams of Roxbury", 446 Pages, by Stephen W. Williams published in 1847, in Greenfield, by Merriam & Mirick. Here is a list from their Table of Contents of what is covered: 9 - Coat of arms 21 - Sketches of the family of Williams 4 - First generation. I. Robert Williams... 178II. Samuel Williams... 254 -Second generation. II. Isaac Williams... 117- Second generation. II. Stephen Williams... 29 -Williams' of Maryland 17 -Williams' of Long Island 30 -Williams' of North Carolina, Tennessee, &c. 249-Graduates by the names of Williams... 24 -Members of Congress by the name of Williams 107-Williams' in Great Britain 100 -Williams' graduates of Cambridge College, England, from 1659 to 1823 66 -Williams' graduates of Oxford College, England, from 1659 to 1782 The Subject Heading is listed as Robert Williams, d. 1693. Both of these books are available to read thru Heritage and can be downloaded, although they are all very large books. You do have the option of downloading only certain pages, which can be stored on your computer using Acrobat Reader. I don't know if anyone on this list has Heritage Quest, but it is available through many libraries which can be accessed from there for free, and some libraries offer access thru your home computer by use of a library card either for free, or for a fee. I myself use the Godfrey Library website, which offers access to many databases including Heritage Quest for a yearly fee of $35. Deloris

    3. Hi Daniel and Donna, Speak of the devil (so to speak)... I recently submitted my mother's brother's DNA (he's a Williams, obviously) to the Williams-DNA project (mostly populated by Southern lines), and came up with a close but not exact match with another Northeastern Williams line: you guessed it, this other line is descended from Matthew WILLIAMS and Susannah COLE. My grandfather Williams's line came from New York (and, ironically given the regional "rivalry" on this list lately, moved to Florida and Georgia and other points south after the Civil War). The earliest definite ancestor I have in this line is Adinijah Williams who was born in Tioga County, New York ca. 1805. His father MAY have been Thomas Williams who MAY have been born in Pennsylvania or New York or... If you've ever heard of Adinijah WILLIAMS, I'd love to hear about it. 3. In response to your request for information about my WILLIAMS family, William Richard WILLIAMS (also known as Warwick WILLIAMS) was born in 1869 in Brynsadler, Glamorgan and his father was Evan WILLIAMS (born 1847 in Llantrisant, Glamorgan). Evan WILLIAMS' father was Richard WILLIAMS (born 1803 in Pendoylan, Glamorgan). Richard WILLIAMS' father, Evan WILLIAMS was born in 1762 (place of birth unknown but further research needed). All the foregoing were born in villages in close proximity to each other. Unfortunately where names were handed down through the generations, of a similar nature, this creates difficulties of tracking down one's correct ancestors! Warwick WILLIAMS emigrated to the United States in 1905, and was my grandmother's brother. I hope these details will assist in your quest for information on the WILLIAMS' families. To my knowledge, none of my WILLIAMS's, pre-1901, were born in England. However, just to make things a little crazier. . . my NY\MA\NH\VT Williams are somehow connected to some southern Williams'. My mother has an old sugar chest that had a paper saying that the chest was given, along with two slaves, to some Williams in the Culpepper, Va area. I can't for the life of me figure how the lines are connected, or which Williams it was given to. Unless, of course, one of my early northern ancestors went south. How the sugar chest got back up north then, i don't know. It was stored somewhere in Vermont before making it's way to E.V. 3. Delores, this is quite interesting. Yes, some of those people back there bucked tradition and did the "right" thing and saw to it that their slaves were freed and had an inheritance. I have seen many wills that provide for them. Unfortunately society would not openly accept what they knew went on behind "closed" doors, thought it was open knowledge. We tend to set our ancestors up on a pedestal until we find all those bastardy suits and memoirs of family members. That is one thing that makes genealogy so interesting. Dorothy C. 3. Yeah, some of them did sort of have nerve enough to do that. I don't think that Samuel actual "said" they were his children, but it was apparently known in his family because I've seen several occasions where the the Williams & Alston families were involved with my Green ancestors. Samuel actually left them lots of land and they were the first persons mentioned in his will with exact details about their care. On top of that, he had apparently been involved with Crese even when he was a young man living at home because his parents had been the original owners, and after his father died, his mother gave Crese & her son, Tom, to Samuel as a deed of gift. It was Crese, Tom & Tom's wife and 5 children who were freed in 1791, andin 1798 the Court freed them plus other children born into the family since the original will. Needless to say, I, too, have been fascinated by all of this and have enjoyed finding out as much as I can about all of those families. But this is not the only Williams line I have researched because I have at least 2 others through a different ancestor, one being from Granville which I've done extensive work on. There were a lot of Williams in North Carolina, as you know. Deloris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy C. 3. Andy, Much of the Warren Co.NC Williams history is intermingled with that of the Alston families of the same area, including that of old Edgecombe County. There is a book that was written years ago called something like "The Alston & Allston families of North Carolina & South Carolina", and it has quite a good lineage of the families. It may be available at libraries, and I've seen parts of it online, and I also believe it may be one of the books on Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com, I'm not sure. Also you may want to try a Google search for the name of the book or individual because there are lots of people who have done research on those families, one of them might have some clue for you on Thomas Williams.
