Howdy Williams cousins! Normally I would be writing in regard to either my John & Mary KEELING Williams family (G7Grandparents) or Jonas Williams of North Carolina (G6Grandfather), but today I am writing in regard to my newly found G10Grandparents John & Elizabeth WHITLEY Williams of Virginia. I would love to have information on John & Elizabeth & their children: John (the eldest); William who died in 1711 married Mary MOORE; Thomas, married Susannah Crew Davis; Mary; Elizabeth, married Thomas Wright; *Bridgett/Ann Williams, married John Browne; Richard, married Sarah -?-; Jane; Theophilus; & Nicholas, married Ann LEWIS. The following is what I do have on this Williams family: On 20 November 1667, John Williams, by his mark "X", was a witness to a deed whereby John Wheatly purchased 400 acres of land in Isle of Wight County Virginia from Anthony FFulgeham. John Whitley, in his will dated 21 February 1670, named John Williams as his son-in-law, and left him one shilling. John Whitley willed to his daughter Elizabeth a bed and other items. There were no other daughters were named in John Whitley's will, but he mentioned his granchild Ann Williams as the daughter of John Williams. There are a number of Isle of Wight County Virginia deed records involving John Williams, and at least three with that name who left wills dated 1686, 1689, and 1691/92, making it difficult to distinguish one John Williams from another. However, the John Williams who's will was dated 1691/92 mentioned three grandaughters: Ann Brown, Bridgett Brown, and Mary Browne. And John Browne had three daughters by these same names. John Williams' will was dated 9 March 1691/92 and probated on 9 August 1692. He named his wife Anne as extrx, and gave her his dwelling plantation for life. He named 6 sons and left them lands, 2 daughters Mary and Jane, and several grandchildren including my ancestor Bridgett Browne (daughter of John Browne, who married John Rasbury). There remains some degree of uncertainty with regard to John Williams and his family. Marriage records of Isle of Wight County show a John Williams married ______ Whitley, daughter of John Whitely in 1671; and John Brown married ______ Williams, daughter of John Williams in 1692. John Browne had three daughters Ann, Bridgett, and Mary, who were named in the will of their grandfather John Williams. John Williams did not name two of his alleged daughters (Elizabeth and Bridgett or Ann in his will. However, his widow Anne, in a deed of gift in 1694 to her children, did include her daughter Elizabeth Wright, but there was no mention of a daughter Bridgett or Ann. Some secondary sources say John was married twice, but no conclusive evidence has been uncovered, other than the marriage record noted above. Again, what seems to be certain is that a John Williams had married a daughter of John Whitley, and that John Williams had a daughter named Elizabeth or Elizabeth Ann, or daughters Elizabeth and Ann, and he had grandaughters named Ann Brown, Bridgett Brown and Mary Browne. John and Elizabeth/Ann had 10 children: (1) John, the eldest son; (2) William, died 1711, married Mary Moore; (3) Thomas, married Susannah Crews Davis; (4) Mary; (5) Elizabeth, married Thomas Wright; (6) Bridgett, my ancestor; (7) Richard, born after 1676, married Sarah; (8) Jane, born after 1676; (9) Theophilus, youngest son; and (10) Nicholas, born about 1687, died 18 August 1749, married Anne Lewis. (Ref: The George Whitley Family by Walter Charles Whitley; Wills and Administrations of the Isle of Wight County Virginia by Blanche A Chapman; Colonial Families of Surry and Isle of Wight Counties Virginia, Vol 6 by John A Brayton; Historical Southern Families, Vol 6 by John B Boddie; Whatley Grandfathers, Revisited by Mary E Whatley Jones). Bridgett was named as the wife of John Browne in 1706, when they sold 220 acres in Kingsale. Who was John Brown's wife is somewhat problematic, and lacking of evidence that directly links her to her parents John and Ann Williams. There is no mention of Bridgett in the will of John Williams or in a deed of gift from Ann Williams, the widow of John Williams to her children. However, John Williams does mention three grandaughters: Ann Brown, Bridgett Brown, and Mary Brown, whom are known to be the daughters of John Browne. The Isle of Wight County, Virginia marriage records of 1692 show that a daughter (no given name provided) of John Williams Sr married John Browne. Thus, additional research is needed. (Ref: Marriages of Isle of Wight County Virginia by Blanche A Chapman; Seventeeth Century Isle of Wight Virginia by John B Boddie; Historical Southern Families, Vol 6 by John Boddie; Wills and Administrations of the Isle of Wight County Virginia by Blanche A Chapman) I also have a second newly discovered Williams family that as with the above I am a descendant of, that of John & -?- -?- Williams through their son Lewis Williams, but that maybe too much for one e-mail...lol. Hello, all. At the risk of being considered a poor research person, I am asking for the following info. What are the names of the parents of William Jefferson EADS?? His wife was Dora MARTIN, and in 1903, their daughter, Martha, was b. in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Also, who were the parents of Dora MARTIN?? Martha married James Fred CHAPMAN, Sr., in ca, 1920, and they had several children. One son was James Fred, Jr., also known as Bill. Bill was b. 9-16-1925 in Gastonia, Gaston Co., NC. He married Betty Jo BALLARD, on 3-19-1965, after a tour of duty in the military, during the WWII times. They settled in Harris Co., TX, soon after the marriage. In attempting to structure a family tree for the living son of Bill and Betty Jo, I am seeking any assistance I can find, to locate the names, dates and places of importance in the lives of his ancestors. Any help is appreciated. Joe DUKE --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was sent to the WILLIAMS DNA list but the regular list is just as important so I am forwarding this valuable site. Dorothy C. White [email protected] 804.795.4296 Want to look for your kin folks................jr http://www.castlegarden.org/ CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period. Castle Garden, today known as Castle Clinton National Monument, is the major landmark within The Battery, the 23 acre waterfront park at the tip of Manhattan. From 1855 to 1890, the Castle was America's first official immigration center, a pioneering collaboration of New York State and New York City. CastleGarden.org is an invaluable resource for educators, scholars, students, family historians, and the interested public. Currently the site hosts 10 million records, and support is needed to complete the digitization of the remaining 2 million records, beginning in 1820, from the original ship manifests. The Battery remains one of the oldest public open spaces in continuous use in New York City. American Indians fished from its banks, and the first Dutch settlers built a low, stone wall with cannons, a battery to protect the harbor and New Amsterdam. The transformations of The Battery and that of the Castle tell the history of New York and, by association, the growth and development of our nation. IMMIGRATION RECORDS FROM CASTLE GARDEN Before Ellis Island, there was Castle Garden. The Castle was our first immigration center, from 1855 to 1890. But immigration records there go back to 1820. If you had ancestors who came over in that period, they may well have been processed at Castle Garden. Most of those immigration records have been digitized and placed online. Just enter the name. My maiden name was Horton and I am very stumped. My earliest Horton was a man by the name of Abner. He was married to Ester, and had children, one of whom was my great-grandfather. I am assuming that Ester was a Johnson. John Williams was married 3 times and had children by all three of his wives. One being my great grandmother, Mary Etta Williams, who married Jessie Will Horton, from Choctaw County, MS. 1. ABNER2 HORTON (HORTON1) was born Abt. 1800 in South Carolina, and died Bef. 1870 in Choctaw County, MS. He married ESTHER JOHNSON Abt. 1842 in South Carolina, daughter of JESSE JOHNSON and TARRISSA. I am always amazed at my ability to be wrong. After looking at some info on my Elisha W. Williams, seems he claims his father was born in VA! So, even though my Elisha was born and married in NC., I would be very interested to see the info everyone has on the Elisha Williams of Bath Co.,VA. Did he ever travel to NC, or perhaps had a son who did? Thanks for all the offers of help. Karen Williams Lee Williamsburg,VA
