Several times I have seen inquiries about a Bennett Williams on their site. Below is a record of the will of a Bennett Williams that I hope someone might find useful. Does anyone have information on William Bennett, widower of Martha "Mattie" Williams and father of their son, Joel Bennett? Mattie Williams was the daughter of Joseph Williams and Martha Perritt/Parrott who died in Anson Co., NC in 1825. In Joseph's will he gives to his grandson, Joel Bennett, son of his deceased daughter, Martha Williams fifty dollars and to his son-in-lay, William Bennett he leaves 50 cents. I do not know what became of Joel or his father, William Bennett. ______________________________________________________________________ Executor Bond for Zachariah WILLIAMS, deceased >> Bennet B. Dorothy, I say yea and amen to this. You go Girl!!! I would also like to say if I could invite an ancestor to Thanksgiving Dinner, it would be my husband's 2nd great grandfather, John C. Williams who was born abt 1789. I would ask him what was his wife's name. Numerous other things, too, but I would like to go back in time and visit with them. Sure hope I could get back, though. For Thanksgiving Dinner I'd like to invite my great-great-uncle, Rev. Samuel Williams (1802-1887), author of "Mormonism Exposed", http://www.solomonspalding.com/docs/1842Wilm.htm and my great-grandfather, a Mormon convert. Then, after dinner, they could leave the rest of the guests and adjourn to another room, where they could express their differences of opinions privately and discreetly and in a Christian-like manner.
If our ancestors didn't want more, such as we do now, we would not have what we do now. That's why we invented the things we did, that's why we grabbed all the land that we could. For better and worse, that thinking has always been a part of our fabric. Our ancestors generally came here for a better life than what they had. The freedom that we had\have also has a LOT to do with our resilience and ability to overcome, and has been a pervasive part of our personality as well. What we have lost is an general understanding of what hard work means in a physical sense. However, we still have the "there's got to be a better way to do it" mentality that is evidenced in companies like Apple and others. So, I don't know that the American mind-set is any better or worse than it was. It's just more "modern". Additionally, I am heartened to see our country jump to the aid of others in times of disaster. It's also fascinating to see the people of New Orleans seek an understanding of how to rebuild a society from the ground up. As usual, there are a few pioneers who will blaze the trail for the rest to follow. Yeah. . .for all of our problems. . .I'm still quite proud of who we are. Simpler life? Hmmmm. . .in some ways. . .but I don't think having to harvest and hunt for my meals, worry about marauding Indians, or getting caught up in the various wars on our continent counts as "simpler". :-) Jeff On Nov 19, 2005, at 6:37 PM, N & K Chestnut wrote: > What an interesting picture of our meeting with our ancestors > you have painted. Dorothy, I happen to agree with what you said and fell you expressed it very well. I'm just afraid this is not the forum for this discussion. As is obvious from earlier posts, some of the folks are not comfortable with the concept of different opinions that that all have credibility. I'm afraid that instead of bringing us together in our search for our ancestors, this could do the opposite. I suggest this topic be moved to another site. Lynda Cook

A close look at our actual history, rather than a nostalgic memory of something that never was, would tell you that most of our ancestors lived during times when our country was in pretty dire straits. There's been scarcely a decade in our history that we were not at war, internally or externally. Our ancestors survived and thrived; so will we and so will our country. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Helen" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2005 11:04 PM Subject: RE: [WILLIAMS] Meeting our Ancestors >I do not think the talking funny, the clothes we wear or the houses we live > in with all the material things would bother them as much as the condition > our country is in. > > Helen > > -----Original Message----- > From: N & K Chestnut [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2005 5:38 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [WILLIAMS] Meeting our Ancestors > > > What an interesting picture of our meeting with our ancestors you have > painted. So Helen, what condition is our country in? Do you think that they would be upset with today's politicans? The ones that voted and said one thing but as soon as things were no longer as popular turn around and yell that they were lied to and tricked? Or do you think that they would be upset with the Hollywood people who because when thier political choice lost started saying things like they were afraid that rape would now be legal (Cameron Diaz) or that they were afraid that one party would show up to their door with a gun to shoot them (Julia Stiles). Maybe the our ancestors would be very upset with the way that things are today. --- Helen <[email protected]> wrote: > I do not think the talking funny, the clothes we > wear or the houses we live > in with all the material things would bother them as > much as the condition > our country is in. > > Helen > > -----Original Message----- > From: N & K Chestnut > [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2005 5:38 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [WILLIAMS] Meeting our Ancestors > > > What an interesting picture of our meeting with > our ancestors you have > painted. I do not think the talking funny, the clothes we wear or the houses we live in with all the material things would bother them as much as the condition our country is in. But what if we were in their world, instead of ours, would we know how to go at a slower pace? Or live a simpler life? Our ancestors might me in awe of the "new fangled things", clothes, cars, etc., but wouldn't take long before they would be horrified at what we had managed to do to our country and the " I want everything" lifestyle we live. Just a thought.... Donna. > Have yall ever stopped to think that our ancestors "talked funny" to our > ear? Well, I tell ya, it sure shows we all have a lot to be thankful for. I sometimes think that's our trouble...too many of us don't appreciate how much we've got!
What an interesting picture of our meeting with our ancestors you have painted. But what if we were in their world, instead of ours, would we know how to go at a slower pace? Or live a simpler life? Meet them in the afterlife, such a discussion may be deemed "politically incorrect" or even a bunch of "foolishness" by some. I wonder what our ancestors would think of that kind of thinking?
