    1. [WILKIN] WILKINS (or WILKIN), Aroostook Co., Maine
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, I had forgotten that I belonged to this List. But, now that I have been reminded, I could mention some information I now have. I have spent the last 4 days trying to solve a WILKINS mystery involving families living in Presque Isle, Maine, in the late 1800's and up to 1950, etc. This research project started because I was trying to find out if any of my ancestor, Samuel WILKINS (b~1775, d1867), had any descendants in Presque Isle or the neighboring town, Monticello. He lived in Amity, Maine, from ~1835 until his passing. These are all towns in Aroostook Co. A few weeks ago I sent a "letter to the Editor" of the newspaper in Presque Isle and it was printed last week. One man, now living in another state, responded. He told me about the "WILKINS Store" in Presque Isle. He told me to contact the Town Historian. I did, and he provided me with a picture of the Store. A description of the store was included and I found out an E. P. WILKINS was associated with the store. But, I found out there was another George WILKINS family in the town for a long time. After 3 days of on-line searching, and placing queries and receiving responses, I found out that George had 2 sons, Charles, who remained in Presque Isle, and "Edward" who lived in Houlton, ME. And, that E.P. was Edward WILKINS and he was the one who moved to Presque Isle ~1911 and opened the "WILKINS Store" in 1913. This Edward was born in MA, but his father, Joseph, moved the family to Coos Co., NH. I haven't traced this line back, yet, but I'll try to work on it this week. It turns out that George WILKINS was in the area from ~1870 and he seems to have been an important citizen and researchers have studied him, and written about him. I found an on-line data base which has his line going back to the patriarch, Bray WILKINS, and then coming down to Carlisle, MA, and later up to southern Maine, and then up to northern Maine. I might not have mentioned my "concrete-block wall," Samuel WILKINS in a long time. He was reportedly born in "Maine" 1775-1780, and "no one" knows who his parents were. He married ~1800 probably in "Maine" and "no one" knows who his wife was. She was Electra "Leeta" _______. They had 5 children, and the family is in Unity, Maine, in 1810, 1820, and 1830 census (mid-Maine). ~1835 they moved much north to Amity, ME, and he and his 2 sons remained there. Their daughter married my ancestor, J. Calvin KIDDER (1799-1891), and lived in Calais, ME. Their younger son, George Freeman WILKINS, married in Amity, but lived in both Maine and New Brunswick. (I am missing one daughter.) My "educated guess" is that William and Sarah (BANCROFT) WILKINS left Middleton, MA, ~1775 and moved to the Augusta, ME, area, and had another child -- Samuel. If anyone is interested, I have more information on the above. I have been researching Samuel WILKINS for about 7 years. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: There was another Edward WILKINS in northern Maine during the 1800's; he and his familyl lived in Charlston, ME (or "in the back woods north of Bangor"). And, as the 1800's moved along, there were other WILKINS or WILKIN people living along the Maine / New Brunswick border. Some came from England.

    3. Hello all, This mailing list receives posts that are forwarded from the companion Message Board. This is called the gateway. Because of the new board system that is now in place those posts now arrive to the mailing list using the gateway address. The proper course of action has always been to click the link in the gateway post and reply on the board but now that method of replying will become mandatory as there is no way to reply via email to the board poster--any replies you wish to make MUST be posted on the board. Replying to only the LIST will NOT reach the board poster and clicking REPLY to the gateway post will result in the gateway address bouncing as it is not a valid address for receiving mail. You will recognize posts coming from the message boards by the address gc-gateway and they also contain the statement: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Below this statement there is a link which will take you to the message board where you can post your reply. Any questions or comments please direct them off the list to jasche45133@gmail.com Sincerely, Joan Asche Admin
