I just posted these notes in response to an inquiry in VAUGHAN-L, thought I'd add them to the body of info re: Lincoln County. Judie Korff's query prompts me to get out some information I gathered in Wisconsin a couple weeks ago. None of these VAUGHAN/VAUGHN folks are my relatives (ggf came to area from England in 1886), but maybe they will help others. The 1880 census for the Village of Jenny (now Merrill, WI, in Lincoln County; first known as Jenny Bull Falls) lists: VAUGHN, R. J., white, male, 23, printer, born in WI, both parents born in Ohio. V ... , Sarene, white, female, 22,wife, born in Maine, both parents born in Ohio. V ... , Mabel, white, female, 3, daughter They were at dwelling number 169 visited by the census taker, and they were family number 186. Families 185 and 187 were also recorded at dwelling number 169. The 1880 census for the Town of Ackley (a township in Lincoln County) lists: VAUGHAN, Reuben, white, male, 31, farmer, born in WI, father born in NY, mother born in England. V ... , Harriet, white, female, 27, wife, keeping house, born in Iowa, father born in NY, mother born in Ohio. V ... , Elwood, white, male, 7, son, at school, born in WI. V ... , Elbia, white, female, 5, daughter, at home, born in WI. V ... , Ella, white, female, 4, daughter, at home, born in WI. V ... , Ethel, white, female, 9/12, daughter, at home, born in WI. In "History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas Counties Wisconsin," compiled by George O. Jones, Norman S. McVean and Others, pub. 1924 by H.C. Cooper, Jr. & Co. in Minneapolis-Winona, MN, we find these references to VAUGHANs: P. 42: "The second paper to be established in Merrill was the Northern Wisconsin News, which was Democratic in politics and was founded by David Finn and Reuben F. Vaughan in 1878. This paper was sold to W.H. Cannon and H.C. Hetzel on June 17, 1881." P. 244: Next to a full-page portrait of David H. VAUGHAN, there is on this page over 40 lines of dense text on David H. VAUGHAN. I will pull key facts, am willing to snail mail a copy of all to folks who want it and can't access a copy of the book cited. In 1924, DHV was county surveyor of Oneida County (north of Lincoln). Born in Saranac, Clinton County, NY, 17 Nov. 1842. Father was Eliphalet H. VAUGHAN, mother was Mary Content Roberta DE LA FONTAINE. Moved to Dane County (Madison area) at four, lived there till 1854. "The family then moved to Stevens Point, Portage County, where his education was continued in the public schools." From 14, worked at surveying and lumber cruising. 14 Aug. 1862, enlisted in Co. H, Third Wis. Calalry as private. Discharged at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, June, 1865. Ran "fleets of lumber down the river from Mosinee to St. Louis." For 14 years he operated a boom at Stevens Point, had furniture store there, was sheriff of Portage County. Visited Rhinelander in 1882, moved Oneida County from Stevens Point in 1890, homesteading at Tomahawk Lake for two years. Bought a house in Rhinelander and moved there "in order that his children might have better educational advantages." Surveyer, lumber scaler, state lumber inspector, county surveyer. Free Mason in Stevens Point, then Rhinelander. Knight Templar in Stevens Point; charter member of Crusade Commandery. G.A.R. member till the post disbanded. Episcopal. DHV married in Stevens Point 26 Dec. 1870 to Jennie Brawley, who was born there 29 March 1851. Their nine children were: Mattie Edith, Lucile K., Virginia, David Lynn, Charles Brawley, Miles Bennett, Clayton Dorsey, J. Russell, and Donald Hugh. Hope this helps someone. Looks like it's possible there were 2-3 other lines of VAUGHANs in early Lincoln County, besides mine. Don't know how, or if, Reuben F. VAUGHAN (1878 ref.) may be related to R. J. VAUGHN (printer, 1880) and Reuben VAUGHAN (farmer, 1880), and it doesn't look like any of them are related to David H. All part of that northern branch of early VAUGHAN/VAUGHN immigrants, I guess. -- Tom Vaughan, Editor The Mancos Times-Tribune Serving the beautiful Mancos Valley since 1892 P.O.
