Next we can work on the discrepancies in various records. :-) FamilySearch.org database of the 1880 Census, Ward 5, Sheboygan, Sheboygan, WI, BARTINHAGEN {sic}, Claus, 45, worker in chair factory; Mary, 33; Diedrick, 17; Mary, 13; Katie, 11, all b. I believe that Claus was listed as Claus, not Charles, though his name is hard to see. (Transcription ad GenWeb says Charles, & I also thought it was Charles at first reading.) On the same page, the birth month of Julius POPHAL is listed as April 1861, and Katie, Apr. 1868. Henry BARTENHAGEN, b. July 1864, & family are on the same page. FamilySearch and Wisconsin Historical Society have Carl Julius Herman POPHAL, son of Wilhelm POPHAL & Johanna TESSMAN, m. 2 Nov. 1889, Lincoln Co., Katharinia BATENHAGEN {sic}, dau/o Claus BATENHAGEN & Maria SCHLIETMANN. Hi Lincoln Co Researchers, I just wanted to make you aware that there is a fairly new project called "Trails to the Past" which is a genealogy project which hopes to put lots of information online for researchers around the USA. It is divided into the 50 states and then each state into counties. I have taken on Lincoln County, WI because my paternal ancestors lived in Tomahawk. I am slowly building the site with information that I think may be helpful to any of you searching in the county. The address is: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wilinctp/ If anyone has information/photos to share, I will certainly be happy to add it to the web pages. Please take a look and feel free to give me any suggestions on what is important to you! I have been doing genealogy research for about 10 years on my own family, but it's always helpful to get other perspectives. While I don't live in the area, I will certainly try to find and add anything that I feel could help in your search. Mary (Peterson) Saggio

There was another Julius Barnekow in the Ohio area, but he did not match up with info that I have. Bertha married Carl Theodore Hartwig in 1889. The last Barnekow child to be born was Emma in 1885 in Marathon County. I have never found any divorce records for Bertha and Julius. Nor have I ever found any death records that match the information I do have. I am not sure whether the story about being a bigamist relates to his life prior to 1878 or after 1885, or for that matter, is even true. It is feasible on either end. There still remain Barnekows in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area. Bertha and Julius lived in Milwaukee for a number of years. While the second and fifth child were born in Marathon County, Wisconsin, the third and fourth were born in Milwaukee. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
