I have just uploaded a transcript of the 1855 State (Wisconsin) census for Marathon County. In 1855, Lincoln County was part of this large county. Marathon was later split up into Lincoln, (1874) and parts of Taylor, Price, Vilas and Oneida. Also, check out the Family Trees pages of these two counties. If you want, send me a brief tree of your family - with NO living descendants, and via e-mail, so I can cut and paste them, and I will put it on these pages. Shelley

I have been asked to provide a page for small family trees on my county pages. So if anyone wants to send me a SMALL tree - a few generations, and with NO living people, I will put it on a page. Please send it in an e-mail, so I can cut and paste it - makes my life simpler! Thanks Shelley
Qualified persons can now get Heritage Certificates for your ancestors. This is a new program of the Marathon County Genealogical Society. Pioneer Certificates will be issued to persons who ancestors were residing in Marathon County prior to 1861, Early Settler Certificates to those residing here prior to 1881, and Century Certificates to those residing here prior to 1901. Certificates may be issued in the name of another person, other than the applicant, such as a sibling, child or grandchild. An application will be required, and proof must be provided the the form of copies of documents establishing the facts claimed. Such documents include Census, Land, Church, School, Naturalization (including Declaration of Intent) Probate and Vital records. A compete list will be included with the application, along with instructions and tips. There will be a small fee - I believe it will be $5.00. To obtain an application packet, send a large self addressed stamped envelope with your request to MCGS PO Box 1512 Wausau, WI 54402-1512 or pick one up at a regular monthly meeting of the MCGS. It will also soon be available on the web site http://home.att.net/~mcgs/ Shelley
I have been (unjustly) accused of spending too much time on the internet. My son solved the problem for me. I went to www.callwave.com, and downloaded free software which puts a small box on the top of my screen, and receives messages from an internet answering machine. The company even called our local phone company to set it up. The ONLY charge is from the phone company for a thing called Call Waiting Fixed Busy - I believe it will be about $3.00 a month, but sure saves the time and expense of putting in another phone line. A caller instead of getting a busy signal, gets a message that says something like"the person you have called is on the internet. Please leave a message" You can even personalize your message. The caller leaves a message, which then comes into the small box and you hear it, and know someone is calling you. Anyway, it works!! Shelley

Posted on: Lincoln Co. Wi Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/Lincoln/239 Surname: Cotey ------------------------- I am researching Helen Emma Cotey (born 28 Mar 1896). She married Leon Smith (born about 1891) on 25 Nov 1915. She again married Erling O.Ravn in 1924. This all took place in Merrill, Lincoln county, WI. My question is this: Did the first marriage to Leon Smith end in divorce or the death of Leon Smith? I would appreciate any information regarding either a divorce or the death of Leon Smith. Thanks Monica Schilter, Germantown, WI
Hi all, Thanks for being such great subscribers - I often get mail praising the efforts of all on these lists! Have a Blessed Holiday season - and happy New Year. Shelley
I have finished the ship's manifest - The Steamer America, from Brehmen to New York, docking 14 June 1867. This is referred to as the Kickbusch ship, as August Kickbusch went from his home in Marathon County back to Germany and the story goes that he brought back 702 new immigrants to settle in Wisconsin - not all in Marathon County, but quite a few! Because of the difficulty in deciphering the names, I would like to ask if anyone has firm knowledge of an immigrant family and the name is incorrect, to let me know. I certainly would like all of you to read the foreword of the table, and give credit to Darlene Winter and to Amy Ryan-Conway for their help. Go to the Marathon County Home page, http://www.rootsweb.com/~wimarath/ Marathon County Wisconsin Genealogy Wigenweb Click on Name Indexes, then on the Kickbusch Manifest. ALSO, I have streamlined (I think) the home pages for Marathon and Lincoln County. I don't like to have a lot of pictures and stuff on them, because not everyone has modern fast computers, and downloading takes forever! I did have someone who told me she was going to redesign my pages, but I never heard from her after the initial letter - she must have taken one look and was scared off! Anyway, that got me thinking that I could maybe clean up the pages. If anyone has any other suggestions for me, I am willing to listen - or if you hate the new design - whatever - let me know. Another thing - I just found about 4 generations of my family - because of the new [email protected] lists that Marcia Kuehl wrote about. I joined the Wisconsin one, and requested a look up. I was perhaps really lucky because the person who responded looked up 4 differnet censuses. If anyone needs the instructions on how to join these lists, e-mail me. And I just want to tell all of you I am so proud of you! I get many comments on how helpful the people on these lists are, and I quite agree. While I don't have a connection to the DuBois surname, my grandmother and father both grew up in Tomahawk. I have a picture of women sitting on a porch at a birthday party. Libbie DuBay, b. 1870, m. Henry Duranso, aka Duranceau, 16 Nov 1890 in Lincoln County. Mrs. C. DuBay, age 62, widow, b. VT, with son Henry, age 32, b. WI, a log driver, found on 4th St. in Tomahawk City on the 1900 Lincoln Co. Census. Have found references that DuBay was aka Dubois, part Indian. Mrs. C. might be Calista, possible second wife of John. John might be the John B. DuBay, died 1887, maybe in Marathon or Portage County. Except for the 1900 census, my data is unsubstantiated, so ANY clues will be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time. Katheryne
