    3. Thank you to all who responded to my Woodmen enquiry. I have found their sites and if anyone is interested, they seem interested in hearing your stories. MWA is http://www.modern-woodmen.org/ WOW is http://www.woodmen.com/home.cfm I'll be contacting them both soon to see if I can find out anything on my ggf and will report back later. Once again, thanks for the great info. Margaret

    2. Jim/Lue Sundberg
    3. My grandfather, William C. Knospe was a lodge member in Merrill and when he died as a young man in 1906, his insurance with them was what kept my grandmother from being destitute, left as she was with 4 childrren to raise alone. She always spoke with gratitude of the Woodmen of the World. She often mentioned being a "Rebecca"... could this have been the wives unit? I'm not sure I have Rebekah (?) spelled correctly. Does anyone know? Luette Luette Sundberg [email protected]

    2. I also have a picture of the Woodman marching down the street during the Parade for the Fourth of July in Tomahawk and a few articles regarding their upcoming program in Bradley Park. Evidently this was a family program. they set up tents in the park for adults and children. I would guess since this is a holiday, probably had food etc. Dawn

    2. Modern Woodmen of America and Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society was (is) a fraternal society offering insurance and other benefits and activities. It was very popular as a form of insurance protection in the timeframe that you mentioned. It also sponsored youth activities for it's members. I have a picture of my father, John Posey (1893-1942) circa 1908-1915 with a drill team from Merrill that was sponsored by the Woodmen in some competition in Toledo, Ohio. The men were all dressed in uniforms and were brandishing axes, as men from a logging community would. The name of the team was something like Woodmen of Jenny. Margaret Posey Nelson

    3. I was looking over a couple of obits I have for my ggf Edward Ryan who died in Merrill in 1922. One says that funeral arrangements were held under the auspices of the "Woodman Lodge" while the other mentions the "Modern Woodman Order". Does anyone know anything about this organization? Thanks, Margaret

This most likely refers to the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benefit (i.e., insurance) organization. It still exists today, with headquarters in Rock Island, Illinois. Their company historian will answer queries about people for whom they paid death benefits. (There is at least one other similar organization with a similar name [but including the word "World"], which split off from the MWA.) Rollie
