    3. The GLO database of patents pertains to cash sales of *Federal* lands, those surveyed with the section/township/range system. About a dozen states in the midwest are in the database, and it's a fine thing that the data has been put on line. Heavy users of this information may find it useful to buy one of the GLO CD's. Kentucky records prior to about 1792 are found in Virginia, its parent state. Virginia has an on-line searchable database of its colonial patents, so indeed early KY patents can be searched for. You can get scanned images of the actual patents that John Blankenbaker used to do his Madison Co. maps, too! Here's the site: http://image.vtls.com/collections/LO.html Select the surname that's closest to your target name, you'll then get a chance to step through individual cards. In the case of Wilhoit, you select Wilfong, and with a bit of trial and error the Wilhite cards start at about #32. There are a number of Wilhoit patents in KY in 1785/6. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't cover Kentucky (I'm still looking for the parents of George Washington Wilhite, my great-grandfather, who died in Hardin county in 1898). Just as a trial, I looked for Wilhite land patents in Missouri and found 80! The URL is: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ Hope this helps someone. Elmer L. Wilhite, Jr.
