John, this is my updated file on Jackson. I had a very fruitful trip to Texas Co. MO last week. Please share with the cousins. Thanks for coordinating our group, Mary WILHITE, Jackson What I need: 1. Marriage record of Jackson Wilhite and his wife, Jane _____. 2. Primary evidence tying Jackson Wilhite to his parents or other members of his family. Current working theory: Jackson Wilhite is the son of Julius Wilhite 4, Conrad 3, Tobias 2, Michael 1, as listed in Germanna Record, # 13, A. L. Keith's Broyles Genealogies and other genealogies. Jackson married Jane Lay, dau. of John M. and Rachel Foley Lay, no date/place, according to the late J. Gilbert Lay's "Lay Genealogy," 1972. What I can document with primary evidence: Jackson Wilhite was in Campbell county, TN between 1815-1856.(1) Jackson Wilhite was born c.1815 in TN. (1) He married a woman named Jane. (1) Jane was born circa 1816.(1) According to Claudia Willhite Aldridge, Jackson and Jane were married 24 Sept. 1834. Jackson and Jane had issue: Lucretia, 12 Feb. 1836 (2); married George Preston Douglass, 24 March 1853 in Campbell County, TN (3), died after 1870, Texas co. MO. This family is not listed in the special 1876 census for this county. George Preston Douglass moved to the Red Rivers counties of north Texas after 1870. (17, 16) In 1840 Jackson is listed as head of household, age 20-30, wife same age bracket, 3 females under 10, one male 70-80, one female 60-70 (his parents, Julius and Margaret?) (10) In 1830, Julius Wilhite has a male, 15-20 living in his household (Jackson?) (11) Jackson lived in Elk Valley, west of Pine Mtn. (6) He owned 60A land on the Elk fork of the Clearfork, (Cumberland River), adjoining the lands of Alexander Davidson, James Richardson, Walter Edwards, which was surveyed 3 April 1833, Survey No. 233, Entry No. 540, dated 10 Dec. 1832, Campbell co. TN (7). He bought 50A land from James Gibson, registered 4 June 1841.(8) Jackson sold Michael Lay 50A land, 1846. Jackson bought 100A land from C. M. David, 1847(8). Jackson bought at Sheriff's sale 200A on Lick Fork, owned by Starnes Wilhite and sold for delinquent taxes in Aug, 1851. Jackson was the only bidder. Jackson sold land on Lick fork to Edward Perkins, Aug. 1851 (9). Jackson sold land on Elk Fork to Robert Morrow, July 1855 (9). Jackson served on road crews from Elk Gap to the forks of the road and the top of the Buffaloe (sic) Hill, from James Sharp's to the Elk Gap. He served as a justice of the peace for the 13th District of the county in 1843, 1844. He was a revenue commissioner in 1844 and returned a list of taxable property and polls.(12) Jackson and family moved to Texas county, MO, with his brother-in-law, Thomas Lay, settling in the "Big Creek" area about 2 miles south of Yukon, MO.(14) His first land entry in the tract book is dated June 23, 1856, southeast qtr. & north half lot 1, northwest qtr, sec. 31, twp. 30, range 8. He also bought land in sec 5, twp 29, rng 8, upon which Roger N. Wilhite now lives(1998). On March 10, 1857, Jackson acquired 120 acres in 30/30/8 through Military Land Warrant #78586(4). Jackson was in Piney twp. For the 1860 federal census. According to that record he was literate, but Jane was not.(13) By the 1870 federal census, Jackson is living in Ozark twp, next door to Thomas Lay. Listed in the household are Jackson, Jane, John W., James, Delila, Mary C., Nancy A.(19) During the national depression, Jackson, Jane, John and Mary lived with Ezekiel Willhite.(20) Jackson was quite active in the real estate market.(4) Jackson died in Texas co. MO 1895. His son, John W. Willhite was the administrator/executor.There is no evidence, to date, of a will.(5) Jackson was buried in Big Creek Cemetery.(2)There is a fairly new tombstone which reads "Jackson Willhite 27 May 1815 17 Feb 1895." Buried next to him is his wife, whose tombstone reads "Jane Lay Willhite 12 Mar 1816 28 Jul 1889."(15) DOCUMENTATION 1. 1850 Federal census, Campbell county, TN, 17th subdivision, dwelling 853, family 853. 2.
