I believe that the James Wilhite who married Comfort Stansbury is a different James Wilhite. When my G G G Grandfather applied for a veterans pension on the 20th day of March, 1871 part of his letter of application reads "was married to Peggy Baker on or about the year 1811 at Jefferson County in East Tennessee.......wife died at same county & State in which she was married on or about the year 1830....affiant has not been again married. I obtained a copy of the original document from the National Archives SC-5626. I checked the Jefferson Co, TN vital statistics and found that marriage record of James Wilhite and Peggy Baker on March 12, 1812. The Bondsman was a John B Wilhite. Since this would have been someone older and able to pay the bond I had thought perhaps John B would have been father, an uncle, or an older brother. But have had no luck there. James and Peggy's children were: 1. My G G Grandfather, MADISON B WILLHITE b. 14 Dec 1813 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co. TN m. 22 Aug, 1832 in Palestine, Crawford Co., IL to Susan B Stewart (b 25 Jan 1814) d. 11 May 1890 in Olney, Richland Co., IL 2. URSULA I. WILHITE 3. NELLIE WILLHITE 4. ALFRED A WILLHITE b. 1823 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., TN m. Lavina Smith about 1847 d. April 1868 Polk Co., MO Some family records show that Peggy Baker died in 1823 contrary to James pension statement. It was generally believed in the family that he remarried in 1824 to a Susan. I have found no record of that marriage. I do know that he had more children as follows: 5. JOSEPH WILHITE b. May 1824 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., TN d.1858 in Polk Co MO. m. Elizabeth Joseph signed the Bounty Land Claim application for the land James had in MO. 6. CONAWAY WILHITE b. 20 Oct 1826 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., TN m. 26 April 1857 in Polk Co., MO to Louisa Jane Chandler (b.12 Dec 1839 in Tn) d. 25 Oct 1895 in Polk Co., MO 7. SILAS WILHITE b. 1831 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co. TN m. Emily Hannah 30 Oct 1850 8. NAOMA WILHITE b. 1832 in Dandridge, Jefferson Co., TN m. James O Bristow 28 December 1851 James children spelled their surname different ways at different times. My GG Grandfather spelled it Willhite and all of his descendants have spelled it with the double l. I have more than a thousand of James descendants but have been unable to identify his parents. I checked the 1878 census of Culpepper Co., Va and compared it to the 1800. Between those years two John Wilhites with son's old enough to have children in 1790 moved out. Does anyone have information about where they went? I also am aware that a Phillip Wilhite and his family were in NC. I see by some of the replys that children born in NC were marrying in Jefferson Co TN about the time James Married Peggy Baker there. Does anyone have information on the children of the Wilhites in NC. Thanks for all the info given. I appreciate it because it helps me separate the James Wilhites in my records.
