Gerald, Interesting! Joseph Thornton shows up in Morgan Co, IL in 1833 in a marriage record. His first wife died in August 1833 and he married a second wife, Nancy Metcalf Lewis two months later. That marriage record is in the Morgan Co courthouse. I may be wrong but I had the impression that Morgan Co was the larger county from which Cass was derived sometime between 1833 and 1840. At any rate, I have not found land records yet for Joseph Thornton in either county but I know that some of his children had farms right on the boundry between the two counties, just south of the town of Virginia. I have the 1840 Cass Co census record that I assumed was Joseph Thornton, though there seems to be one or two children missing. I had guessed that maybe the 11 year old son from the first marriage was living with a grown sibling at the time. I would be interested in seeing the information that you have from the 1840 Morgan Co Joseph. I have not seen that one. There very well could have been more than one Joseph in the region. It seems like several branches of the family descended on the area over a period of time. It seems to me that I saw other Josephs in the Morgan Co records but it has been a while since I was there. Thanks for the input and let me know how I can be helpful Dennis Wilhite
Dennis, My ggg grandfather was a different Joseph Wilhite, not your Joseph Thornton Wilhite. But in the course of trying to track down my Joesph Wilhite (I have him as descended from Michael, Michael, Tobias, Johann Michael, etc) I have often run across your Joseph Thornton Wilhite who lived at the same time and was found in some of the same general areas. As I remember your Joseph Thornton Wilhite descends Aaron, John, Adam, Johann Michael, etc. In the 1840 Illinois census I found Joseph Wilhite (Joseph Thornton I assume) in Morgan County, Illinois and in the same 1840 census there is a Joseph Wilhite in the town of Virginia in Cass County, Illinois. I can see on the map that the town of Virginia is located only a few miles from the Morgan County line. Do you know what is going on here? Based on the ages and number of children, these appear to be duplicates, but I don't understand why. Possibly the apparent duplication relates to the later establishment of Morgan County out of a larger Cass County? Or possibly I found a town census that is duplicated in a county census? Could there have been two Joseph Wilhites in the Morgan/Cass County area in 1840? Dec 5, 1848 to Eli Wilhite and Elizabeth Ryman in Cass Co, IL. The record has her married to a Daniels. This record comes from papers I recieved from my grandmother who was a daughter in law of Sarah's younger brother. I also have the 1850 census record. The reason there is no 1860 record is that Eli died in 1855. His wife Elizabeth and the younger sons showed up in Iowa with a few of the older brothers in 1870. My guess is that in 1860 they were with relatives somewhere in the Cass County area, but I have not found them yet. I do not have record of Sarah's marriage but Menard Co is a stones throw from where Sarah was born. Her younger brother, Eli Thornton Wilhite, my great grandfather married a girl from near Petersburg, Menard Co. I am guessing that he met her while back in Illinois from Iowa visiting one of his sisters that seemed to settle over that way, maybe Sarah. As for Eli and Elizabeth, Eli is a son of Joseph Thornton Wilhite who moved to the Cass county area in the 1830s while it was still part of Morgan Co. I have a great deal of information on him and his forebears. Elizabeth Ryman was a daughter of Joseph Ryman and Margaret Johnson. I have some information on them and their ancestry but not very complete. Let me know what you need. I will be happy to share. I am of course interested in whatever information you may have as well, particularly because I have not been able to locate the place of death and burial for Sarah's mother, my great, great grandmother. She seems to dissappear from Iowa before her death in 1899. I am guessing that in old age she went back to Illinois to live with a daughter. There is no marker for her next to her husband in Cass Co. and I have found no death record for her in Iowa. Maybe we can figure this out or maybe someone else out there has a clue. Kelly, Do you have any information on Caleb Wilhite's brothers. I am looking for a Gordon Wilhite, born around 1830, and probably in Kentucky. Joined the Army in Indiana to fight in the Mexican War and then returned to Indiana where he married, divorced, married again and had a number of children, including my grandfather, Leroy Wilhite. As many of you know, I retired in January. As a result, I'm going to be doing some travelling, plus doing a lot of "Honey-Do" work around the house for some time. Therefore, I am going to have to turn over the WILHITE & WILHOIT Mailing Lists to someone else. I started them at Rootsweb when no one else seemed to be interested, mainly to make sure the management of the Lists stayed within the GERMANNA Community. If anyone is interested, PLEASE contact me privately, NOT here on these Lists. Let me know if you have any experience with managing Mailing Lists; tell me who you are and what connections you have to WILHITE and/or WILHOIT. This is not a "First Come, First Chosen" opportunity; I will try to turn the Lists over to the best qualified. Regards, George W. Durman WILHITE & WILHOIT List Manager
Sorry but I don't. I have very little on my Dad's family as they weren't very close.
