He is 56 years old in 1880, and is married to Margaret. Children include MC, Frank, SA, CA, DH, and JR. Kids ages 0-22. The problem is that his place of birth in the 1880 Pike County, Indiana census is listed as Penn. and both of his parents were born in England. How can this be? Does anyone have any info about this Frank Wilhite, or any other born in England Wilhites? Gerald

For those of you who haven't yet tried this route, you can go to Google and search on USS Wilhoite, and you will have access to nearly 300 websites with lots of info about the ship, which appears to have been built right here in Houston. Following is the citation concerning Thomas Mack Wilhoite. I intend to include it in the "notes" for Thomas in my PAF: U.S.S. Wilhoite (DER-397)- Named in honor of: Thomas Mack Wilhoite- born on 12 February 1921 in Guthrie, Ky.-enlisted in the Naval Reserve on 16 June 1941 at Atlanta, Ga., and received his aviation indoctrination training at the Naval Reserve Air Base, Atlanta, Ga. On 7 August, he reported for flight instruction at the Naval Air Station (NAS), Pensacola, Fla., and was appointed an aviation cadet the following day. Transferred to NAS, Miami, Fla., on 15 January 1942 for further training, he became a naval aviator on 6 February. Three days later, he was commissioned an ensign and, at the end of February, reported to the Advanced Carrier Training Group, Atlantic Fleet, NAS, Norfolk, Va. There, he joined Fighting Squadron (VF) 9, then fitting out and, in time, became the assistant navigation officer for that squadron. Operation "Torch"-the invasion of French North Africa-saw VF-9 assigned to the carrier Ranger (CV-4). Each section of the squadron drew assigned tasks on 8 November 1942, the first day of the landings; and Wilhoite flew one of five Grumman F4F-4 Wildcats which attacked the French airdrome at Rabat-Sale, the headquarters of the French air forces in Morocco. Despite heavy antiaircraft fire, he pressed home a determined attack and set three French bombers afire with his guns. In a second strike directed at the Port Lyautey airdrome later that day, Wilhoite flew as part of the third flight and destroyed one fighter-a Dewoitine 520-by strafing. However, the Vichy ground gunners served their weapons well; and Wilhoite's Wildcat took hits from the intense flak and crashed about one mile from Port Lyautey. Wilhoite received a Silver Star, posthumously, for displaying "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" during the strikes at Rabat-Sale and Port Lyautey. The accompanying citation also cited Wilhoite's "superb airmanship and tenacious devotion to duty" in pressing home his strafing attacks. Although he was killed in action, Wilhoite had played his part in the significant operations of VF-9 in neutralizing Vichy French air power that, if unhindered, could have severely hampered Operation "Torch." (End of Note.) Once again, thanks for your help. Dan
Please remember that there is a maximum size of an email posted to this Mailing List. This is necessary due to so many users having ISP's that limit the size of emails they receive. Therefore the following is provided to guide you in your postings: 1) This List has a maximum of 10,000 (10 Kb) for the size of an individual posting. 2) Remember that if you format your long post to just at 10 Kb, it may not get posted because by the time the headers and footers are added, the size is slightly over the limit. 3) The same concern in #2 above also affects many of our fellow researchers. Some services add more data in headers or footers than others; by the time long posts get to some users the size is also over the 10 Kb limit of those servers. Because of the above, I would heartily recommend that when you post long emails containing pedigrees, family trees, etc., you check out the size BEFORE posting. The way I do it is to type the entire email, then select what I think is somewhere around 6-8 Kb and save it into a temporary file. Then I look at that file in either Windows Explorer or in DOS and see exactly how large the file is. With experimentation, you will soon be able to closely guess how much material makes up 6-8 Kb. I RECOMMEND YOU KEEP YOUR POSTS TO THAT FIGURE, 6-8 Kb. Many users pass on such information and by the time their text is added, and more headers and footers, the resulting email is over the 10 Kb limit. *****VERY IMPORTANT -- READ THIS***** When you reply to one of these very long posts, DO NOT quote back ALL of the post. That is considered very bad netiquette. You need quote back ONLY the part to which you are replying about. If you're replying just in general to the long post, quote back only the first line or two, so that others know what you're talking about. If you are like me, you get really aggravated when you see a reply to a 9 Kb post, where the replier quotes back ALL of the post and adds something like, "Thanks for the info." Then someone else replies to the reply, quoting back both the original and the one short sentence, and adds something like, "Thanks from me too." In those cases, you don't need to quote back ANYTHING. The subject line tells what you are referring to. If you don't know HOW to quote back only necessary parts of a previous post, just use your mouse to highlight the parts you don't want to include in the reply and hit the DELETE key, leaving only that part you want to quote back. For AOL users, if their system is still set up as it was in the past, you use your mouse pointer to highlight the portion you DO want to quote back. Just don't select ALL of the original post. Hello Cousins: Have just resubscribed after having been gone for a while. The subject of my interest is Thomas Mack WILHOITE. There was a U.S.S. WILHOITE, named after Thomas. The ship has since been decommissioned, sold, and scrapped. Do any of my cousins have any information on Thomas? He was born in Guthrie, KY in Feb., 1921. Entered the Naval Reserve in 1941. I am trying to determine his particular line of descendancy. Thomas was posthumously awarded the silver star for "conspicuous gallantry" in action against the Vichy French in the invasion of North Africa on 1942. My line of descendancy in the WILHOITE line is from the immigrant Johann Michael WILHOITE, his son, John, grandson, Nicholas, and gr.granddaughter, Frances. Frances,"Fannie", married Nicholas BLANKENBAKER. It's good to be back in the "loop" again. Warm regards, Dan
========================= This is to inform all the East Tennessee Germanna descendants that the 2004 Reunion in Washington Co. will be held on 11-12 September. I wanted to MAKE SURE that those who must submit vacation schedules at work have the correct info for the 2004 Reunion. This gives us 14 months to get the word out, to all our cousins who descend from an East Tennessee Germannan, about next year's Reunion. Please pass this on to any appropriate Mailing List, Message Board, Web Site, etc. Let's get ready NOW! Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Knoxville, TN =========================
I'm sorry to be so late getting out the word about this year's East Tennessee Germanna Descendants/BROYLES Reunion. After last year's fiasco, I wanted to be 110% certain that I posted the correct dates, and had all the pertinent information. The Reunion will be held on 13 & 14 Sept 2003, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, in Washington Co., TN. All the pertinent information can be found at: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/easttennesseereunion3.html> Just so everyone understands, even though our Reunion is held in conjunction with the BROYLES Reunion, it is intended for ALL Germanna Descendants whose ancestors came through East Tennessee (Washington County, Green County, any other TN County, or the "Watauga Settlement".) If you haven't found any links to ancestors who were in East Tennessee, but think that maybe some of them were there, take a look at the linked page which includes a list of E. Tennessee Germanna families (as well as information on driving directions, maps, hotels/motels, etc.). That page can be reached at: <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/reunionmapsetc.html> PLEASE, if you plan to attend, RSVP to me either from the web page, or to a reply to this email. We need to know how many to prepare food for on Saturday, how many chairs/tables, etc. As indicated, on Sunday there will be a "Pot Luck" dinner after church services. Those coming from "out of the area" don't need to worry about not being able to bring a dish -- there will be more than enough food to feed all of us. Should you want to bring something, feel free to stop by Kentucky Fried Chicken, or some other fast food outlet. Whatever you want to bring, main course, salad, dessert, etc. Hope to see you all there. SgtGeorge George W. Durman Knoxville, TN
