I subscribe to the TUCOWS Weekly Newsletter and this week the cover story concerns "Cookies", those things that scare users to death and about which many "myths" have been created. Forgive me for burdening you users with this long email, but I felt it worth sending. It answers many questions about what a Cookie is, what it does, whether or not it is dangerous, whether or not it can dig out data from your system, etc. If you are concerned about Cookies or think they create security problems for your system, please READ ALL THIS ENTIRE ARTICLE !!!!! SgtGeorge List Maintainer **********(Start of Forwarded Article)********** So it's the day before I go on vacation and Scott says to me, "Let's do an article on cookies for the next Grazing Grounds. Explain how cookies are our friends." I muttered something about only liking cookies that come with chocolate chips. Well, that's not fair. I do like the occasional Oreo and Fortune Cookies ... but I had the sinking feeling that was not what our noble leader had in mind. So I grudgingly went out in search of cookie crumbs. I was shocked by what I learned. I consider myself a pretty hip net.junkie, but just about everything I believed about cookies turns out to be false. For those who don't already know, "cookies" are little snippets of code that help in certain interactive functions with Websites. Cookies are most frequently used in marketing and legitimate security applications. Some webmasters use them to track the number of hits, the type of browsers being used, or the number of times you have visited a webpage. Each time you visit the site, the cookie is updated and stored in your browser's directory (sort of like a passport that gets stamped each time you visit a country). Webmasters look at that information and design better sites to reflect your interests. They can even design websites that automatically update themselves depending on your preferences. Unfortunately, there is great concern that they can also be misused to violate your privacy. You can be sent cookies when you load a webpage or a graphic from a WWWServer. The concern has been that cookies might be able to "scoop" information from your browser - getting private details like your e-mail address or the past few web sites you visited. According to Andy's Cookie Page <http://www.illuminatus.com/cookie.fcgi>, cookies only store information relative to the particular site they came from - they can't read cookies from another site unless there is an agreement between sites to share cookie information. Any security risks are not with the cookie, but with data that you give out to websites through forms and online applications. It doesn't matter if a web site sells or gives your information through a cookie or through simply e-mailing that list - the only way they can do so is for you to volunteer that information at some point. So if you don't want spam, don't worry about cookies - just make sure not to give out your address (credit card number, address! , hat size ...) to just any attractive looking page that asks. Look for a privacy assurance that the web site does not sell their mailing lists. I have been using a "cookie sweeper" for the past few months, and now wonder whether or not it is worth keeping. Since I've learned that there is no security risk, that people can't get my address unless I offer it, there is no compelling reason to deny cookies at this point. Scott tells me that there is a utility built into NT servers that many administrators use to manage logins. Our Webmaster at iDirect, Greg Weir, says that this can be turned off at the administrator's discretion, but many leave it on. There are some websites that will not display the information you are seeking if you don't take the cookie. I still have mixed feelings about cookies. In most websites, cookies are helpful to Internet users. I go through 4 sets of cookies three different times when I visit my bank's website, and I'm happy to do it because it reassures me that getting through their encryption wouldn't be a simple matter (not that I have a large pile of hay there, it's just I want to keep what little I DO have). Many websites use cookies for "shopping baskets" or to help visitors create custom versions of their pages. Webmasters could resolve a lot of their reader's fears if they had a simple message on their pages explaining what their cookies are doing and why they are useful to the surfer. There would be a lot less anxiety about them then. ==== WILHITE Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe from WILHITE, send an e-mail message to: [email protected] (for individual messages) [email protected] (for Digest mode) Subject: unsubscribe In the body include only one word: unsubscribe (Turn OFF your signature file when sending this command)
I finally got it! Over a year ago I started trying to reconstruct my Wilhite family history. I quickly found the massive amount of information available from way back up to the mid 1800s. I also had the information that I had gleaned from my Grandmother back in the 70s. However, finding verification as to how the two linked together was a bit of a challenge. My hypothosis based on suggestions from others and circumstantial evidence was that the line I sprang from was Michael, Adam, John, Aaron, Joseph Thornton, Eli. I tracked Eli to Morgan Co, IL which put him in the right place to be connected to my great grandfather, Eli Wilhite who was born in Virginia, Cass Co, IL (Cass was earlier part of Morgan). My guess was that my Eli was a son of Eli, grandson of Joseph Thornton, etc. Well today I finally obtained a marriage license for Eli T. Wilhite and Mary Arnold (my great grandparents). They were married in Menard Co, IL January 5, 1879. Eli's parents are given as Eli Wilhite and Elizabeth Ryman. Bingo. Now for the information that I have from my grandmother. Eli had moved with his mother and at least some of his brothers to Iowa Co, IA in 1868 some time after his father had died. He was still a young teenager. He returned to IL and married Mary Arnold, taking her back to Millersburg, IA. Then in 1884, Eli and one brother moved their families to Corwith, Hancock Co, IA and settled. That is where my grandfather Earl was born, lived and died, and where my father Orlan was born and raised. A have a good bit of information on this Iowa branch if it is helpful to anyone out there. Now I would sure like to find out a bit about the Ryman family. I only know that Elizabeth Ryman's father was Joseph. If your ISP is @worldnet.att.net, please be advised that the service is still having problems !!!!! I'm sorry, but the bounces from @worldnet.att.net have become so numerous that they are about to overload my system. Usually, I wait until after the 4th bounce to see if SmartList at RootsWeb successfully removes the offending addresses from the subscription list. With the problems today at @worldnet.att.net, I am preempting SmartList and manually removing any addresses that bounce from @worldnet.att.net the first time. You users of ATT's service should complain bitterly to the administrators there and force them to correct the problems. One would think that with all of ATT's wealth, they could hire competent software and hardware technicians. Guess they pinch pennies whenever possible to maintain the profit margin for the stockholders. Don't know which is worse, ATT or AOL, when it comes to cheap help. Just for the record, JUNO users have almost as many problems as ATT. I get several dozen "bounces" a day from JUNO because "the user's quota has been exceeded". If you are a JUNO user, please empty your mailbox often so that your email doesn't bounce. Or, for AOL, ATT, & JUNO users, find a reputable nation-wide ISP that doesn't limit the size of the messages, nor the number that is allowed in your mailbox at one time. One that also doesn't break down Digests and screw them up, as AOL does to many users. Two services that I highly recommend are Mindspring and Concentric Net. Here is a web site URL to get a list of all the servers in the country and a little bit of info about each: http://www.herbison.com/herbison/iap_meta_list_us_nationwide.html SgtGeorge List Maintainer ==== WILHITE Mailing List ==== To unsubscribe from WILHITE, send an e-mail message to: [email protected] (for individual messages) [email protected] (for Digest mode) Subject: unsubscribe In the body include only one word: unsubscribe (Turn OFF your signature file when sending this command)
Since we have so many new subscribers, and so many "newbie" computer owners (GRIN), I thought it might help if I posted again and explained how to reply to an email and NOT send back the entire message to which you are replying. As one user just stated, it is not necessary to send back the entire quoted message, just enough (maybe a line or two) to let the readers know to what you are replying. First, this section is for NON-AOL users. Click on Reply. That brings up a new message window with ALL the text of the message to which you are replying. Decide how much of the original message is necessary in order for users to understand your reply. Then, put your mouse cursor at the beginning of the text that you wish to DELETE. Hold down the left button (keep it held down) and drag the cursor to the end of the text you wish to delete. Now release the left button. Viola, all that unwanted text is highlighted. Hit the DELETE key and it disappears into the ether. What you have left is the necessary quoted text. Be sure you delete all the junk at the end of the message, you know, the "tag line" that I cause to be added to the end of every message posted here. Now, unless AOL has changed, when you reply to a message, there will be no text in the reply UNLESS you highlighted it in the original message before clicking Reply. Just do the same thing as explained above to highlight JUST that text you wish to be repeated in the reply. You might not believe it, but I have helped some users who were deleting text in their replies BY HITTING THE DELETE KEY OR BACKSPACE KEY hundreds (thousands) of times to get rid of the unwanted text. More hints. Now you know how to "highlight". Any thing else you can do with this highlighted text? Sure! How about, once you have high- lighted an email address, you want to copy it to the Clipboard? Easy. Once the address is highlighted, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the "C" key. That puts the highlighted text on the Clipboard. Next, how do you paste that address on the Clipboard into the TO: line of a message you want to send? Again, easy. Put the mouse cursor where you want to paste the text, left-click the mouse, then hold down the Ctrl key and hit the "V" key. Lo and behold, the text from the Clipboard is now in the TO: line of your message. Couple of other shortcuts: To delete highlighted text and, at the same time copy it to the Clipboard, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the "X" key. To highlight all the text AND headers of a message, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the "A" key. Now a Ctrl+C copies all that stuff to the Clipboard. To move from one open application in Windows to another open application, hold down the Alt key and hit the Tab key. The first time you do this, you will see one open application -- DON'T release the Alt key! Successive presses of the Tab key cycles you through all the open applications in Windows. To see ALL the open applications in Windows, and be able to select the one you want to go to next, hold down the Ctrl key and hit the Esc key. That brings up a Task LIst. Very handy for switching back and forth between applications. Give it a try. Hello Everyone, Hoping for some help! I havent ever posted any queries here on my own(usually through John Connie Wilhite), So thought I would see if anyone might recognize any of my Wilhites. I am looking for information on my grandfather James Andrew Wilhite. I obtained a copy of his death certificate and it tells me that he was born on Nov 11, 1880 in IL., and died on March 12, 1934 in Garfield, Benton Co., AR. He was married on April 14, 1919 in Benton Co., AR., to Mintora Abegail Lee, daughter of Jesse Vincent Lee and Mary A. Rubottom. James and Mintora had 4 children, one of them being my father James C. Wilhite, still living. The other three children were Juanita M., still living, Jesse Paul, died in WWII, and Betty June, died in 1986 in N.J. I dont believe that my grandfather James Andrew was born in IL. But I need to find proof of where he was born. My Aunt Juanita, one of James Andrew Wilhites daughters, shared her birth certificate information with me and it says that James was born in 1880 in Monett, Mo. This is one reason I dont think he was born in IL. Another reason I think he was born in Missouri is because his death certificate list his father as H.P. Wilhite, birth place unknown and his mother as Mary Riley born in IL. In Lawrence Co., MO., I discovered an Haloway P. Wilhite who married Dicy M. Riley on Oct 17, 1875. This H.P. and Dicy are listed on the 1880 census for Lawrence Co., in Spring River Twp., with one child Lula, age 2. This census also says that H.P. was born in TN., and that Dicy was born in IL. Also in a Lawrence Co., MO., tombstone inscriptions book for Spring River Twp., there were two children of Mary D. & H.P. Wilhite, one was a daughter who died in 1877 and one was a son who died in 1883. This couple are the right ages to be my grandfathers parents. James was not on the census, but he was not born until Nov of that year. Dicy could have been preg., with him during the time the census was taken. James Andrew had a brother named Onus/Onis. Onus appears on the 1910 Lawrence Co., Mo., census (also on the 1920 Barry Co., Mo., Census)with his wife Frances P. Onus and Frances are also buried in Lawrence Co., Spring River Twp. Onus and Frances had the following children: Atha, Mildred M., Martha E., Claudie, Amos W., & Bert A. Willhite. My father was only 4 years old when his father James died, so he cannot tell me much about his father or his family. After the death of her husband James, Mintora remarried and never talked to her children much or kept in touch with the rest of the Wilhite family. There is a Disa Riley, age 13, born: IL., on the 1870 census who lived with Pryer L. Snuffer and family. This is a ? to me! Pryers wifes name was Mary. Could this Mary be Dicys mother, and Pryer her step-father? If this Mary Snuffer is mother to Dicy, then Mary Snuffer would have been 14 yrs., old when she had Dicy. Was that very common back then? (the age?) In 1866 James Willhite purchase land in Lawrence County, Spring River Twp, he was an early settler there. I think this could be a brother to H.P. Wilhite. They both were born in TN., and only 8 yrs apart in age. And this could explain one reason that my grandfather was named James. I also wonder if maybe H.P. Wilhites father was James also. Seems a lot of families back in the early days went by a naming tradition, where they named their first born son after the paternal grandfather and the first born daughter after the maternal grandmother. In other words, the son after H.P.s father and daughter after Dicys mother. Does anyone have any information on these Wilhites I listed. Sorry to rattle on. Just wanted to get as much information out as possible, so maybe someone can help me in my search of my hard to find Wilhite family. They sure seem to know when & where to hide I guess. Any information would so much be appreciated. By the way, I tried a query on the Lawrence Co., Mo., roots-L page and got no response from anyone on the Wilhite/Willhite name. One more thing, I tried to find H.P. on the 1860 census listing for TN, he was born abt 1852. No luck! Im seem to have ran into a wall again. Thanks for your time, I do so much enjoy reading all your posting from this Wilhite discussion group. Thanks again! Welcome Donna. Would you believe with all the thousands of WILHITE/WILHOIT names I don't have your line?! I am extremely interested in any lines that I don't have in my database. I have several ties to WILHITE/WILHOIT through my BROYLES/BRILES, YAGER/YEAGER, and other lines. Where did your line migrate to from VA? Mine all came with the late 1700's migration to what is now East Tennessee. When you get your line tied in to the first immigrants, I would love to exchange information with you, in the form of a GEDCOM file if possible. Keep in touch, SgtGeorge WILHITE Listowner P.S. Have you sent your query to the GERMANNA_COLONIES List? You will probably find some help there also. I am looking for information about Rev. Fielding Wilhite. He was an influential Baptist minister in early Missouri. He was born in Kentucky April 14, 1799 and died in Boone Co. Missouri, March 1872. He was son of Sampson Wilhite. Fielding had 4 children: a daughter who died in infancy, and three sons. Fielding had two brothers: Stephen and William. I suspect that one of his grandsons was Fielding Hollis Wilhite 1867-1916. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay Watson [email protected]
Thanks. Have you seen the Wilhoite Gedcom (author unknown) It gives a list of children for Mathias. I't says Mathias m. Mary Ballenger, but I'm getting e-mail from folks who say Mary married Michael Wilhoite (a nephew as I remember) All, I can say is that one of Mathias' wives was named Mary. I'm from John's line (best evidence.) Bob Scott
Bob - I'm sorry I have no proof that Joel and John were brothers, other than it being written in Leona and Earl Willhoite's book on John Willhoite (1745-1837)in the FOREWORD where it states in Paragraph 5, second sentence "Though John and Lucy used the spelling Willheit, some of their sons, as well as many of John's brother Joel's numerous descendants who lived in Owen County, KY also, adopted the "Willhoite" spelling as used on the tombstones of John and Lucy". I know about the argument that these could be sons of Tobias instead of Matthais and I have no proof either. Just questioning, if anyone out there has anything on Joel and his family. What proof is there that John and Joel were brothers. I've often seen it speculated that John was Mathias' son (by process of elimination) There's also a Wilhite Gedcom floating around that has a family for Mathias, but not one shred of documentation. Do you have documentation? Would love to see it. Bob Scott
I'm forwarding this to several Lists, in hopes that someone may be able to help in this CHILCOAT/BROYLES search. If anyone is able to do so, please CC: me with any information. I have no CHILCOAT names in my databases, but have many entries by the name of Elizabeth BROYLES, many different dates, many different places, so it is really hard to pinpoint one of them as a possible candidate. Hope someone out there can help. Thanks, SgtGeorge Listowner **********(Start of Forwarded Message)********** I have been doing research on the Chilcoat name for several years. Three brothers came into Lawrence County Al. about 1819 they were William, James and Thomas Chilcoat. James dies in 1823 and William dies in 1826. Both Men left a family but we have been unable to place the surviving children to the right parent. I thought you might know how many children William and his wife Elizabeth Broyles had and what their names were? If you can help us on this we would be very thankful. Best Regards J. B. Hi fellow researchers- Does anyone have any information on Joel Willhoite, brother of John Willhoite(1745-1837), the Revolutionary War Vet and son of Matthais Willheit (1732-1781/2 and Mary? Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Betty Babitzke Punta Gorda, Fl.
To all subscribers to the RootsWeb Lists I maintain: Here is why you AOL users are being removed by the automatic software at RootsWeb. As you should know, after a pre-determined number of "bounces" from a receiving server, the user's name is removed from the RootsWeb subscription list. Here is exactly what I receive back for each bounce from AOL: [email protected] is temporarily unavailable while we upgrade our system (The XXXXXXX is the user's address.) This has been going on for almost 3 weeks now. I receive dozens, even hundreds, of these every day from AOL. So please don't blame RootsWeb for removing you. The SmartList software is just doing what it is programmed to do. Blame AOL for continuing to reject email to its users. If enough of you were to threaten to quit AOL, maybe they would get things right there. Or, you could always drop AOL and get a dependable server. Your choice. SgtGeorge Listowner

Unfortunately that email got deleted. I was trying to find at which point we are related. Also if you had untangled my dating problem, or if you even go down that line. So if you would be so kind as to re-send it, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Missy
My research is still at the stage of finding direction from collecting research already done and trying to sort it out, in regard to this part of the family. Here is what I have found. There are conflicting ideas as to the name of Nancy, Margaret or whoever this woman was. Most agree she was a Smith but I have found noone yet with an idea as to how she may connect to the Smiths across the way in Madison, or if she was even part of that family. The information that I have found seems to agree with your cousin regarding Aaron and Mary Yeager and Matilda being their child (youngest - born 1810). As for John's second wife, Elizabeth Blankenbaker, she seems to be daughter of Michael Blankenbaker (b 1726 in Madison), grandson of Hans Nicholas (immigrant); and Elizabeth Barbara Gaar (b 2/11/1729or30). I am not sure how she is related to your John David Blankenbaker. She is a first cousin once removed from Sarah Blankenbaker who married Joseph Thornton Wilhoit. They are my ancestors. JT was Matildas much older brother. If anyone else out there has any different or additional information on this please feel free. Dennis Wilhite
so is there anyone out there who has anything that would give a hint as to who John Wilhoit's (son of Adam, grandson of Michael) first wife was. I am finding her identified in a number of sources as Nancy Smith but nowhere have I found any idea as to who she might be. Apparently John and Nancy have a son Aaron in 1768, then in 1769 John starts having kids with wife number two, Elizabeth Blankenbaker. This all happens while still in Madison, VA. Aaron is my forebear and I sure would like to find out who his mom was. Dennis Wilhite (Orlan, Earl, Eli, Eli, Joseph Thornton, Aaron, John, Adam, Michael, etc)
