    2. SYRACUSE, ONONDAGA COUNTY, NY Herald American Newspaper, August 24, 1997 excerpted Camillus Octagon House, 5420 W. Genesee Street, Camillus, NY (Aka Rte 5) Built 1856 and on National Registery of Historic Places. The original owner was Isaiah Wilcox, a retired businessman and farmer and deacon of the Camillus Baptist Church, who built the house on 138 acres of land, much of which was apple orchards. A nearby housing develpment Orchard Village was named after this. Wilcox got his idea from Orson Fowler's book, "The Octagon House, A Home for All." The walls are 22 " thick of cobblestone and concrete. Wilcox, and his wife, Ann Sherman, their son George and their daughter Mary, lived at the house untill 1899. A year later the Fox family bought the house and 40 acres for $1. $250,000 worth of renovations were completed and the house opened to the public 6 years ago.
