    1. Re: William Wilcoxson: Derbyshire or St. Albans

    3. There are two and only two sources of information for William Wilcoxson's origin. First, the group he travelled with (on the ship PLANTER) held a certificate signed by by a minister of the Church of England in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. For this reason, and this alone, many have assumed family origins in St. Albans. No additional proof seems available. An alternate theory (one that I ascribe to myself) was presented by Thomas Wilcox in his 1963 treatise "DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM WILCOXSON". He started the book in the 1930's, and eventually got around to revising it. It is an amazing compilation of Wilcox information. Thomas' theory was that William Wilcoxson was listed as a linen weaver on the PLANTER registry. Researching this industry, Thomas discovered that the flax and associated linen industries were confined to the shire of Derby. Thomas sent off for any Wilcox records between 1550 and 1650, and found another William Wilcoxson's will dated 1626. William had four children, the youngest a William of age 25. Thomas deduced that this man could have been Williams father, although there is no definitive proof beyond this will. Thomas adds many pieces to his puzzle, another being that Reverend Adam Blakeman came over on the PLANTER as well. He was a minister in Derbyshire. Historical writings about Connecticut have noted that many of Adam's flock/admirers followed him from Derbyshire. One interesting study would be to summarize the origins of all the passengers of the PLANTER, particularly those that settled Stratford with William Wilcoxson. My personal research has discovered many Wilcox's living in the Derbyshire region in the late 1500's and early 1600's. I have found another William Wilcoxson born in 1601, his father a Robert Wilcoxson. This was from the Wirksworth parish records assembled by Robert Palmer. Well, that is my "version" of the two competing options. Any opinions are appreciated. Perhaps we could have a lottery, with the winner getting a plane ticket and two weeks of research time to look into these issues. Wonder if anyone would be interested???? Regards, Marcus H.
