    1. [WILCOX] Cummins Wilcox
    2. liz
    3. Hi Wilcox Researchers, Does anyone know the name Cummins Wilcox? I believe he lived in Tennessee in October of 1842. My guess is he then moved to Missouri as his daughter was married in Lawrence Co., MO in 1860. I plan to look at the Missouri census but ever since I have known this my husband has needed my care. He broke his pelvis the last week of September and I have been unable to leave him to go to a library. If you know anything at all about Cummins, I would appreciate the information. Liz Pierce

    2. Time for me to jump in here with my two cents worth. My brick wall has been my great grandfather, John Dennis WILCOX. Born about 1819, he married Elizabeth S. ROCKWELL on February 29, 1851 in Lorain County. He was from Wellington, she was from Huntington, Ohio. They remained in Wellington until around 1855 when they moved to Indiana. John died March 17, 1869 in Knox Co., Indiana. Your posts have given me direction for further research. Thank you all, and happy holidays. Tom Miller Vicksburg, Michigan

    3. What marvelous responses I've had! Thank you. My own Wilcox was Calvin married to Harriett Hubbard & settled in LaGrange. I have a great deal on them & glad to share. I know that an Ephriam came & did survey work before the area opened completely. He returned east & is probly the same Ephriam who later founded Wellington. A cousin tells me he is definitely related, I believe that. But can't find documentation, so far. If the Ephriam of Wellington is son of Rufus & Sally Adams then Then I have him listed, but no years or location, or family of his own. The Wilcox folk in Avon, I have none of those names listed. The search isn't finished yet. Right? Maxine

    1. [WILCOX] Ephraim Wilcox
    2. Dear Joy, In an earlier post, I mentioned Ephraim Wilcox of Lorain County. He was one of the first settlers of Wellington Township. The information I have is from the book "The History of Lorain County" (p. 348) and it doesn't sound as though this is the same family. Ephraim Wilcox came with a group to survey the Western Reserve from Berkshire County, MA. He was born in 1791 and died 28 Aug 1835. Another Wilcox who settled in Lorain County came from Charlestown, Montgomery County, NY was Calvin Wilcox. He went to Wellington in 1825 and then settled in LaGrange in 1827. In 1837 he married Harriet Hubbard. This account is also in "The History of Lorain County" (p. 310). Richelle

    2. I am also trying to trace my Wilcox line who settled in Avon Township, Lorain County. I don't know from which branch of the Wilcox family they are descended. My ancestors were Oscar Wilcox b 1830 who married Lura Gillett. They had 2 children, Horace b 1849 and Della. Horace married Mary Ann Ellson and had 7 children: Bertha, Grace, William, Horace, Mabel, Ernest, Edna. Grace and William were twins. Census records show there were Wilcoxes were in Avon Township from at least 1840. Other Wilcoxes in Avon during that time were Leander, Daniel, Weedon (or Weedom), John and Willis, but haven't yet been able to make any connection. An Ephraim Wilcox was one of the original land party who surveyed The Connecticut Western Reserve. Any info at all would be appreciated. Richelle Parma, OH

    3. Looking for Wilcox folk descended from William Wilcoxson of 1635, NewEngland, who came to Lorain co. Ohio. My line settled in LaGrange, that was Calvin Pardee Wilcox. I am reminded lately that Wellington was founded by a cousin of his - Ephriam Wilcox. So far I don't find proof of the connection. Is there anybody out there who fits either of these lines? 1. [WILCOX] Need help with finding fthe family of Mary Catherine Wilcox (Bledsoe)
    2. Cynthia Daley
    3. Query: Does anyone have definite family information (parents and siblings) for Mary Catherine Wilcox, wife of Capt. Abraham Bledsoe the Long Hunter? I am trying to connect her with her family, but have no proof of lineage. Various accounts give her dates as b.1741-m.1787-d.1842 (all in Virginia). Related to this query are some notes I made on Abram's will, division of land, and a subsequent court case which mentions the Bittles and Eakins, the children of Abram and Mary Catherine. Yesterday I reread part of the History of Washington County, and Abraham Bledsoe's will (dated 4/06/1801- presented in court August 18 and September 15, 1801, recorded in Book 2, pp. 299-300 of Washington County, Virginia)and later court papers (1814-1815)that were filed as part of closing his estate. There are Willcoxes mentioned - George Willcox, (deceased), his heirs, George, John and Mary, and Peyton Willcox, who filed a petition. I'm assuming that these Willcoxes may be related to Abraham's wife, Mary Catherine Willcox Bledsoe. Could anyone provide proof? >From Probate Records of Washington County, Virginia, Will Book #2, Pages 299, 300: In the name of God Amen, I Abram Bledsoe of the County of Washington and Commonwealth of Virginia, being in a sick and low condition, but thank God sound in mind and memory do by these presence make and allow this to be my last will and testament. As for what worldly property I die possessed of I leave and bequeath in the manner following: The track of land I now live upon supposed to contain fifty acres more or less, likewise my two negroes viz Sall and Milly I leave to my wife Catherine during her life or widowhood. I also will and desire that my executors hereafter named having paid all my just debts and complied with my legal contracts the balance of my property to be at their discretion, I having full confidence in them that they will do justice and right. I desire that the tract of land above mentioned with the two negroes may be equally divided after my wife's death, a sgariage assigned my children or their heirs. And I do by these presence constitute and appoint my beloved wife Catherine and my son Abram Bledsoe executors of this my last will with the assistance of Edmond David. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 6th day of April 1801. A. Bledsoe (Seal) Signed Sealed and Pronounced In Presence of Jno Anderson, Elizabeth Parker, and Elizabeth Lloyd. Note: This will was proven in Court 18 August and 15 September 1801. It was recorded in Book 2, pp. 299-3000 Washington County, Virginia. In March of 1806, Washington County, Virginia Deeds, Abraham Bledsoe, exe. of Abraham Bledsoe, deceased, sold 100 acres of land to George Bittle of Washington County, Virginia, being part of 400 acres granted to Abraham Bledsoe (deceased) on 13 April 1798. 1. Re: [WILCOX] New Inquiry (G. Clarke)
    2. Geri, It looks like you have a lot of resources, so I will ask you and post this to the list (again). Gardner Wilcox (two of them) December 6, 1815: Gardner Wilcox and Nabby Eccleston (parents of Gardner N. Wilcox) were married in North Stonington, CT, per marriage announcement in Norwich Courier. (Also in that day's marriage announcements were Lucinda Eccleston (Nabby's sister), who married William Eccleston, and Park Woodward and who married (Persis?) Eccleston.) 1816? Griswold incorporated (Previously a part of Preston and possibly North Stonington). 1820 and 1822 censuses: Gardner Wilcox and Nabby Eccleston (daughter of Ichabod Eccleston and Ruth Geer) were living in Griswold. They don't appear in any other censuses. The 1820 census shows that they had two girls between the ages of 0-10 (Gardner wasn't born until 1825). Ruth Geer Eccleston (whose husband, Ichabod Eccleston, died in 1814) was also living in Griswold in the 1820 and 1822 censuses. 5/20/1825 Gardner Nelson Wilcox (maybe Nelson Gardner Wilcox) was born in New York (according to 1850 census and other sources). One source says he was born in Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY (other names for Nassau (named 1808; incorporated 1819): Philipstown (1806), (formed from 3 towns: Petersburg, Stephentown, Schodack), (other villages and hamlets: North/West/East Nassau, Hoag's Corner, Millers Corners, Brainerd, Alps). * Note: month and day of birth are exactly the same as Emeline's. One or the other may be incorrect. Gardner's gravestone says 5/20/1825. Emeline's is hard to read. Married 10/15/1848 Hannah Spicer, daughter of Eldredge Spicer and Lydia G. Stanton, born 4/22/1829 (age 19 - Gardner age 23). 7/19/1849 Josephine E. (Ellen?) Wilcox was born, died 10/11/1880. 1849 Gardner N. Wilcox bought land and blacksmith shop in Poquetanuck (#366A per booklet in Preston Library) previously owned by Joseph Tyler/Erastus T. Smith/Jonathan Brewster/John Harkness/Jonathan Pierce/Humphrey Avery/Walter Capron. When William G. Wilcox died in 1897, he had run the shop for 12 years and his father ran it for 38 years (per William's obituary). It was called the Stony Brook Carriage Works. 1850 Census Gardner Wilcox is living with Hannah Spicer and infant Ellen (Josephine?) Wilcox aged 10 months. 6/3/1858 Ervaett Wilcox born, died 7/8/1863. 9/16/1859 Hannah Spicer Wilcox died (age 30). 3-20-1861 Gardner N. Wilcox married Emmeline Spicer, Hannah's sister, born 5/20/1842 (age 20 - Gardner age 37), parents Eldredge Spicer and Lydia G. Stanton. 8/20/1862 William G. Wilcox was born ( parents Gardner and Emeline Wilcox). 7/8/1863 Ervaett, daughter of Hannah and Gardner died. 11/3/1864 _____ Wilcox (female) born, parents Gardner and Emmeline Wilcox 3/10/1866 Charles N. Wilcox was born and died 1/30/1867. 1866 Emeline Spicer Wilcox died (age 24), in Poquetanuck, CT. 1865 Beers map shows Blacksmith Shop and Carriage Shop, Est. owned by G. Wilcox, and on opposite side of the road further down on the water side, a house owned by G. Wilcox. Old photos and new photos of house prove that it is the first house (now green) on the left on the waterside of Route 2A as you leave Poquetanuck. A foundation may be seen that could be the sight of the blacksmith shop, but doesn't seem to match the photo we have of the blacksmith shop. 1868 Gardner N. Wilcox married Hattie E. Hall, born 9/18/1850 (age 18 - Gardner age 43), 12/17/1879 Hattie E. Hall Wilcox died (age 29) buried with infant son 5 weeks. 12/27/1883 Gardner N. Wilcox died (age 57) in Poquetanuck, CT. 5/3/1897 William G. Wilcox died (age 35). Gardner N. Wilcox had a half sister in Voluntown who married an Eccleston/Eggleston and whose grandson named Trail lived in or near Poquonock, CT about 1915 (per Frederic S. Wilcox). If anyone has any information about this line or suggestions of where to go next, I would appreciate it. I have been to CT many times to do research and plan to try the Nassau, Rensselaer, NY connection this Spring. My hunch is that this line descends from Edward Wilcox of RI. I had thought that this was the Gardner, son of Isaac Wilcox of Beekman, NY and Wilkes-Barre, PA area, who was born 1805 (no other info available), but that would have made him 10 years old when my Gardner was married in 1815 (I have proof of that now). Thanks. Marcia Richardson
