By 1849, he was in Poquetanuck, CT, but someone online told me he was born in Nassau in Rensselaer County. He was born in 1825 and would have been age 30 in 1855. His parents were Gardner Wilcox and Nabby (Abigail) Eccleston, who were in Griswold, CT in 1820 and 1822, along with 2 female children under age 10. They were married in Griswold in 1815. They don't appear any where else. I'm looking for any Wilcox or Eccleston family members who were in Rensselaer County between 1822 and 1849. Marcia Richardson
There is also an Elisha Wilcox who appears in the 1840 Census of Peoria County, Illinois. Have not been able to attach this Wilcox to my Peoria County Wilcox family which starts with Calvin Wilcox son of Nathan Wilcox of Rensselaer County, New York. Calvin was born in 1837 and married Emaline Larabee of Pownal, Vermont. Nathan Wilcox was married to Mercy Ann Babcock. I am uncertain of the Larabee family but the Babcocks and Wilcox family were 7th Day Baptists. Nathan was born in 1799 in Stonington, Connecticut. Going back from there is tricky but it is believed that Nathan is a 4th generation Nathan Wilcox. In Peoria County there is a Wilcox family who basically started all the schools in Peoria County. These Wilcoxes arrived prior to my Wilcox family. Also I found a Theron Wilcox who never appears in any census, but purchased land from land grants west of the Illinois River. This was also in Peoria County. Theron and Elisha may be connected, I do not know. Maybe somebody can help me. Scott Hendricks
every so often I try again about my brick wall you never know an Elisha Wilcox arrived in upper Canada about 1780 and took up land in the county of Essex in the township of Colchester He was joined by his sons from the North East Pa NY they also applied for land as sons of UEL's He and a daughter Sarah her husband Eliphet Emmons and a young son were murdered on the banks of the Detroit River one son Hezakiah took up land in Kent County on the banks of the Thames river and many of his descendants are still farming in the area.anther son Hezakiah and his wife a Lana Crydreman raised 17 of which I have a good record. Onthe other hand we really don't know anything about Elisha background or his sons that met him in Detroit prior to 1800
Thank you Tim. I see I put Elisha into the wrong century. He was born in 1794, died in Tompkins Co in 1873. I lost track of the start of this string, but you may need to look beyond state records for those serving in the Civil War. My g-g-grandfather, according to his obituary, lived in Oswego, NY his entire life - but he served in a Wisconsin outfit during the Civil War and gave a Wisconsin town as his home when he enlisted. It looks as though a brother did the same thing, so I'm guessing they may have gone to WI to live with a relative after their father died. I came across a clipping in which the following was mentioned "Wilcox and White organs -Me. and Maritimes.". Does any one know anyhing about this?As my Wilcox's are Maritimers and Mainers this aroused my curosity. Juanita
All the states are not complete.
I've looked under several names in the Civil War website, but found no one from NY. I don't think that's possible.
THANKS SHARON great site. Sandra

Supposedly there is an Anna Wilcox tied in somewhere. I Want I want ancestors with names like Rudy Montagnard or Mechiznick Von Steuben or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not Mary Smith or William Johnson. I want ancestors who went to school, could read and write, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year - subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate acid free albums with names, dates, and places. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries, with carved voluble and informative inscriptions on their headstones. I want family members who wrote memoirs, kept diaries, enlisted in the military, particularly officers who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as Congressional members, judges, councilmen, school teachers, county clerks, police officers, firefighters. I want relatives who had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, "religiously" wrote in the family Bible, recording every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. I want immigrant progenitors to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by the National Archives, to have applied for citizenship in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, joined every patrimonial society, kept journals, listed all their addresses, dated every piece of paper they touched and had paintings made of their houses. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and keep for generations, the tribal homestead and left all the aforementioned pictures, diaries and journals in the library. But most of all I want relatives I can FIND! ------------------------- Source: The Parkhurst Family Journal - Vol. 5, No. 1, Mar, 1999 - used by permission.
