    1. Web Archives
    2. Ruth Davison
    3. Quoted from a RESEARCH-HOWTO list posting on Thursaday 13 Nov 1997 Now, to clear up some confusion, Archives are nothing but permanently stored files containing ALL the past posts to the Lists at RootsWeb. For instance, if you subscribe to SURNAME-QUERY, every message you have sent to that List will be in the Archives for THAT List. Every message sent by anyone to that List will be in the Archives. These Archives have already been available for some time to anyone who knew how to send the appropriate email messages containing "X-commands". By placing them on RootsWeb web site, you no longer have to try to remember all those arcane commands, how to format them, etc. Once the Archives pages are active at RootsWeb, all you have to do is log on to the appropriate URL, navigate to the appropriate List's pages and search to your heart's content. The Archives will eventually contain all the messages posted to the Lists, plus all those posted to the same Lists when they were at MAISER. There will be NO usernames and NO passwords !!!!! Anyone can log on and browse through the files. If that scares you, then please read on. In the first place, each person who sends email to a public forum, such as the Lists at RootsWeb, should be aware that, with a few exceptions, as may subscribe to the Lists and receive all the email posted there. So, if you sent something in the past that you are afraid will show up in the permanent Archives, well.......you are already too late. Your email has already been read by everyone who subscribes/subscribed to a particular List. As to those posts being in the Archives, why worry now? Next, some "worry-warts" whine that the genealogical data they post to the Lists will be available to anyone to copy and publish and get rich. Ha Ha! If these nefarious thieves wanted your genealogical data, they could have already copied it by reading your email to the Lists. Now, it may seem that once it is all together in one place with easy access, some data thieves may now find it profitable to log on and copy material, and put it on CD and get rich. Let me ask each of you a question. If you don't want other researchers to see your research, why did you post it to the Lists in the first place? If you wanted it to remain private and not be disseminated, you've already goofed. Folks, once you send it via email, the whole world has access to it. To finalize -- from here forward, if you have something you don't want others to see and be able to copy for further dissemination, DON'T send it to a List !!! If you have sent something in the past that you now decide you don't want to be open to the public, sorry but it's too late. Messages already sent to a List are going to show up in the Archives. There is nothing you or I can do about it. BE WARNED !!!!! If you don't want your email to a List Archived don't send it in the first place. For some of you SURNAME-QUERY users, you CANNOT go to the Archives for that List and expect to find myriads of messages on EVERY surname. ONLY those messages sent to SURNAME-QUERY will be in the Archives. If you want to do a thorough search of the Archives for specific surnames, start with SURNAME-QUERY, then do a search of the List for that specific surname, such as SMITH-L, BROYLES-L, JONES-L, etc. This matter is NOT open to vote or discussion. There will be no usernames or passwords required to access the Archives, starting on December 1st. Until that time, the Archives will not be available...... ........ ------ Ruth (Schauer) Davison [email protected] RR1 Box 2088, Clearwater, BC Canada V0E 1N0 Please help support Internet Genealogy. 1. WILCOX in Western NY (Elijah WILCOX)
    2. I'm looking for the ancestors of my grandfather, Clair WILCOX, 1898-1970. His mother was Estelle Flora WILCOX 1878-ca. 1950 (she took back her maiden name after a short failed marriage to Frederick Roscoe LOWN). Flora's parents were Thomas Fisher WILCOX ca. 1842-1925 and Flora Adalace FAY. Thomas Fisher WILCOX's parents were Elijah WILCOX born ca. 1804 and Sally Ann CUMMINGS?. The other children of Elijah and Sally Ann were: Eliza, James, Mary, Adam, Robert, Hannah, and Helen. According to 1 census, Elijah was a blacksmith. Most of my information (beyond family knowledge) comes from the Federal census. I'm stuck after that. The family seemed to be centered around Cuba (town), Allegany Co., NY and Bath, Steuben Co., NY. (Both counties are in Western NY). Any connections? Any cousins out there? Any ideas of where to look next? Thanks! --Cindy Palmer ([email protected])

    1. Orlando WILCOX
    2. I'm still hoping that someone can help me with my great-great-great grandfather, Orlando WILCOX. Orlando was b. in CT, 08 Jul. 1805 (or possibly 1815), and died 04 Jul. 1875 in Schroon Lake, NY. He was m. to Olive WISWELL, prob. in NY, ca 1840. There were several Orlando WILCOXs in CT, but I haven't been able to track my grandfather. Someone had suggested at one time that he could be the descendant of John and Margaret (KELSEY) WILCOX, but I haven't been able to find anything about their descendants. Thank you. Kathy.

    3. I just found on WILCOX-extension, posted by Ruth Davidson, a Moses Wilcox b 1762 who md Desire Walton. He was son of Job Wilcox who md Lois Watson. Does anyone know anything else about this Moses and his family? Could he have come to Ga where his uncle John Wilcox was? I found a Moses Wilcox in records there., tax records in Franklin Co Ga 1802-1819. I have looked and looked for a Wilcox that md a Desire, that would fit time wise and in GA. Could this possibly be the Desire Wilcox as Head of Household I found in 1820 Monroe Co Ms, and the mother of Mary, James, and Lurrain Wilcox. Does anyone know anything to help?.... 1. How to order the Wilcox Book
    2. Re the book: Wilcox/Wilcoxson Families of New England and Their Descendants. A Genealogical Dictionary. 2nd Revised Edition-- (#0705) I sent a query to Heritage Books asking how to get on the list or buy the book. Here is part of what they sent me: >Prepub Price: $53.00 till 29 November 1997 (thereafter $66) >If you are a Maryland resident, 5% sales tax applies. Shipping and handling >is a $4 charge for continental US; outside the country is $6. >If you would like to place an order, we accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, >checks and money orders. You can call or fax in your credit card order >(numbers listed below), or mail in any order. We do not currently recommend >emailing orders because we cannot guarantee the security of the lines. > >Thanks for your interest in Heritage Books! ---- >Heritage Books, Inc. >1540E Pointer Ridge Place >Bowie Maryland 20716 >phone 1-800-398-7709 (M-F 8:30-5 EST) >fax 1-800-276-1760 (24 hrs) >Check our home page at www.heritagebooks.com >email [email protected] >International callers: Please check with your operator for dialing prefix >before calling us at 301-390-7709 or faxing us at 301-390-7153. Just for the record, I have nothing to do with Heritage Books but I had tried to buy the previous edition of this book with no luck. Used book stores quoted $61 for it but they didn't have any. I also tried to borrow it through inter-library loan. The local library said "Sorry, no library is willing to loan the book to us and only one library that we talked to offered to copy pages if you can tell them which pages you want" (?) And the good news is that this edition contains everything the 1990 and 1993 editions had plus additions and corrections according to Heritage. I do hope my elusive Abraham Wilcox is in there. If not, my plan is to eliminate all the other Wilcox's in the US and he must be the one that is left. :-) <VBG> Bill in sunny Phoenix

    1. WILCOX Mailing List Web Archive Question
    2. Ruth Davison
    3. Marc has made it possible for us to have the list archived on a web page. I have been sitting back waiting to see how it will work. To me it looks great BUT I will put the question to the list if they want it or not. It can be set up with a password so that only those subscribed can access it or it can be open. The reason I'm asking is that we want people to be able to go there! We want those unknown cousins, who are not on the mailing list, to be able to find us, see what we're doing, get addresses of those who have matching families...in short MAKE CONTACT! BUT we need to talk about the visibility of email addresses, privacy and copyright issues and unanimously agreed that our purpose is to share, to contact other WILCOX researchers in any way possible, and make it easy for other WILCOX researchers to find us. Having the archives password protected will do the opposite of that. And worse yet, will decrease the usage by members who SHOULD be able to access them quickly and easily. It's up to you. 1. Do we want the list archived? Yes No 2. Do we want a pass word?
