I do believe that most researchers get almost as great a thrill out of making contact with a new "Cousin" who is also researching our family, as we do in identifying another previously unknown ancestral generation! 3. Bud, Hello Cousin! (as distant the relation may be :)) I found your e-mail a fascinating read. Especially because the source I use most frequently for the Wilcox line (John Wilcox of Hartford, CT, and his Descendants by H.F. Johnston, 1948) has only listed the husband of Sarah Wilcox as David Ensign. But Love's Colonial History of Hartford talked of a Long son-in-law of John Wilcox: Love's Colonial History of Hartford says: "The lot next to Allyn's Island, in Riveret, belonged, originally, to John Wilcox, from whom it passed to his son-in-law, Thomas Long." I couldn't figure out who Thomas Long was! I'm grateful that you e-mailed me and solved one of the many Wilcox mysteries for me. Here is another exerpt from "Love's" concerning the Long family, though not Thomas directly. Maybe you can piece a relationship between Thomas and those mentioned in this passage: "Joseph Long married Mary Lane, daughter of William. She died 1751. In 1651 Mary filed a petition found on Mass. Archives alleging Joseph had returned to England to claim a legacy and never returned, and asking that he be declared legally dead. She married second Joseph Farnsworth who died 1659 and third, John Wilcox Jr. of Conn. Joseph Long was probably the son of William who emigrated to Dorchester, Mass., adn a grandson of Joseph Long, Gentleman of Sudbury, Devon, and Broadmayne, Dorset; a member of the Dorchester Company in England who founded Dorchester, Mass." In the Narrangansett Register July 1889, published by Rev. S.P. Merrill of Rochester, NY, the following is said of John Wilcox, Jr.: "John Wilcox of Rhode Island, believed to be one of the first settlers of R.I. - It will be seen that he was a great wanderer, now appearing in Virginia (probably) and now at the Delaware in the Swedish Governor's colony. He is found also in Manhattan and was probably owner of a farm at Bushwick, L.I. before 1638. He is the owner of the ship Abigail. Evidently he was a man of mature years at the settlement of Narrangansett..." I found it amusing that the publishing referred to John Wilcox, Jr., as "The Rhode Island Trader." John Wilcox of Hartford, CT (listed above) said the following about John Wilcox, Jr,: "John Wilcox of Rhode Island had trouble with Roger Williams and was obliged to remove and appeared in Connecticut and Long Island where he died in 1676." I noticed that you listed John's death date as either 1662/63. All of the information I've run across lists it as 5-24-1676. Where did you get this information from? Maybe we can determine the more accurate date. Thats it for now... Keep in touch! Jessy BURTRAM HOPKINS wrote: > > Jessy, > > I've been reading the Wilcox email for several months now. 3. Hi, My Reuben Wilcox is the son of Francis Wilcox and Rachel Wilcox of Middletown, CT. He was a member of the First Seventh Day Baptist Church in Brookfield, NY. He and his wife were Sabbath-Keepers. His daugter, Dolly Wilcox, married William UTTER, son of Abram Utter and Hannah White. This is where I think the confusion set in... Their son was REUBEN WILCOX UTTER. Dolly and William resided in Plainfield, NY with their children. Reuben Wilcox UTTER was born July 11, 1814 at Plainfield, NY, and died May 9, 1853. He married Mary Esther Clark at Waterbury, CT., Aug 28, 1814. She was the daughter of Wait Clark. She married again, in 1861, John Avery Langworthy of Little Genesee, NY. She died April 27, 1897. Have I explained everything cleary this time? Sorry for any confusion.
