I have been gone for about 3 weeks and I see the new activity on this list. I am going to post my WILCOXES once again. I want it understood that I have no definite proof that Moses is the ancestor, but from all information I have accumalated, and another researcher agrees, that he is the most likely the one. Oh, for a bible record, will or deed somewhere that would confirm! Preponderance of evidence will have to suffice for the present. If this is true and previous information posted is true, Moses goes back to William Wilcox/Wilcoxson of Derbyshire England and Stratford CT. Hi Biff, I know of several Silas Wilcoxes. In fact my gggrandfather was Silas Wilcox don't know his middle initial or name. He married Sarah Ann Drake. They lived in New Providence, N.J. and moved to Ill. and onto Ks. Where he is buried there is another Silas Wilcox also married to a Sarah. Haven't figured that one out yet. Also know there was a Silas Wilcox in N.Y. Don't know who he was married to he came from N.J. I do know my Silas had children Hattie married a Levi Rugg from NY., Addison married a Rebecca Miranda Brown from Pa., Jonathan Mulford married a Clara Alice or Ann McDonald from Ohio, and I don't know about the marriages of his other children who was Ada, Sarah Ann, Annie M., Albert F. and Levi. Does any of those sound familiar to you? Edith [email protected] Biff wrote: > > Seeking info on the descendants of Silas Ames Wilcox. There are two and only two sources of information for William Wilcoxson's origin. First, the group he travelled with (on the ship PLANTER) held a certificate signed by by a minister of the Church of England in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. For this reason, and this alone, many have assumed family origins in St. Albans. No additional proof seems available. An alternate theory (one that I ascribe to myself) was presented by Thomas Wilcox in his 1963 treatise "DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM WILCOXSON". He started the book in the 1930's, and eventually got around to revising it. It is an amazing compilation of Wilcox information. Thomas' theory was that William Wilcoxson was listed as a linen weaver on the PLANTER registry. Researching this industry, Thomas discovered that the flax and associated linen industries were confined to the shire of Derby. Thomas sent off for any Wilcox records between 1550 and 1650, and found another William Wilcoxson's will dated 1626. William had four children, the youngest a William of age 25. Thomas deduced that this man could have been Williams father, although there is no definitive proof beyond this will. Thomas adds many pieces to his puzzle, another being that Reverend Adam Blakeman came over on the PLANTER as well. He was a minister in Derbyshire. Historical writings about Connecticut have noted that many of Adam's flock/admirers followed him from Derbyshire. One interesting study would be to summarize the origins of all the passengers of the PLANTER, particularly those that settled Stratford with William Wilcoxson. My personal research has discovered many Wilcox's living in the Derbyshire region in the late 1500's and early 1600's. I have found another William Wilcoxson born in 1601, his father a Robert Wilcoxson. This was from the Wirksworth parish records assembled by Robert Palmer. Well, that is my "version" of the two competing options. Any opinions are appreciated. Perhaps we could have a lottery, with the winner getting a plane ticket and two weeks of research time to look into these issues. Wonder if anyone would be interested???? Regards, Marcus H. Hi All. Having seen many branches of this tree relating back to William Wilcoxson born 1601, I was interested in the location of his birth being Derbyshire, England. Would anyone be willing to provide a source for this fact? What I've read suggests this may be his birth place but I haven't seen anything directly connecting William and Derbyshire. Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks. Steve Wilcox
Penelope, I've got Daniel WILCOX & Isabel ??? from North/South Elkington, Lincolnshire, ENgland listed as Edward's parents, based on the article in NEHGR Vol. 147, pp 188-191. I'd never heard of the Suffolk WILCOXs being associated with Edward of RI until within the last 2 weeks. What's the argument/reference for that one? Happy Hunting! For those that asked me how to turn off the HTML, so those on AOL can get the red out. Our digest mail is screaming. I am copying information I received on another mailing list. Message-Id: <[email protected]> Subject: [LEWIS-L] While We're on The Subject Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hi folks- While we're on the subject of messages that can't be read, I would like to encourage all of you using MS OLE, Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Internet Email to check your mail settings and make sure that they are set to send plain text only. I know the next question will be why, so here goes my best explanation. If you're are using one of those programs and have your text set to HTML, you will probably never notice it, but for the other people using Eudora and Pegasus or any of the other versions of Netscape, the messages come through in HTML coding like this: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.2106.4 subscribe <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN"> <HEAD> <META content=text/html;charset=iso-8859-1 http-equiv=Content-Type> <META content='"MSHTML 4.71.1712.3"' name=GENERATOR> </HEAD> <DIV>subscribe</DIV> It is also the cause of the colored backgrounds showing up on the AOL digests. (Several people pointed this out to me after my earlier note.)You can see why I am encouraging everyone to send only plain text since this is what the majority of mail programs can read. Below are instructions for re-configuring these mail programs to send plain text only. Thanks, Becky Reconfiguring Microsoft Internet Email Program: Open Microsoft Internet Browser; Click: "Mail" Icon; Select: "Read Mail"; Click: "Mail" along the top of the email screen; Click: "Options" Select the: "Send" tab; Go to: "Mail Sending Format"; Select: "Plain Text"; Click: "Settings" Select: "Uuencode"; Click: "OK"; Click: "Apply"; Click: "OK" ==================== Reconfiguring Microsoft Outlook Express Email Program: Open Microsoft Outlook Express; Click: "Tools" Click: "Options" Select the: "Send" tab; Go to: "Mail Sending Format"; Select: "Plain Text"; Click: "Settings" opposite "Plain Text" Select: "Uuencode"; Click: "OK"; Click: "Apply"; Click: "OK" ================ Reconfiguring Netscape Communicator Email Program: Using Netscape Communicator (Netscape 4.x), from the menu select "edit" then from that menu select "preferences." I only found the William Willcocks connection in early January of this year - Mary Wilcox had been the problem (name spelling) and I made the connection through Phoebe's relinquishment of dower rights to James Rhodes, "legitimate heir" of William. I have the Rhodes line all the way back to Abraham Rhodes in Prince George Co, MD. After I made the connection, I received info from another researcher indicating William's marriage date was 13 June 1791, that's where I got that, then, after our Feb correspondence, I received the transcripts that were in yesterdays letter. Last month, at the Miami-Dade Library, I found a book of Kentucky marriages that gives the same data for Mary's marriage as was in Hattie's info, except the date was 13 June 1791 not 1792. At this point then, the date I was given for William's marriage was actually for Mary and James. I agree with your summation at this point and expand on it as follows: William Willcocks b. 1744 (per deposition 1799-55 years) d. 1802 per probate of will. Probably born in VA if he is same William in Keleher DAR papers (Mrs. Jessie Keleher, 1919, National #168506). I have not seen the DAR papers yet. Phoebe/Pheby/Phoby Ashcraft b.? d. after 1804 (relinquishment of Dower rights. I have no idea where Phoebe came from, but I notice that William may have been in Nelson Co, VA as well as Nelson Co, KY. And another researcher has sent me info on a will in Surry Co, NC, where William is listed as an executor. I would assume that William & Phoebe were married in VA somewhere prior to 1770, assuming there were no other wives and all children are Phoebe's. Children: William Jr. b. about 1771 married Mary Rickmore 25 Feb 1802-21=1771. I note that a William Willcox was indicted by a grand jury in Nelson Co. for living with Rachael Wiseman in 1808, but Mary is later sued as his widow. Ezra b. about 1773 married Sarah Friend 19 Mar 1974-21=1773. My question here is that in Hattie's notes an Ezra Wilcox served in the revolutionary war and would be of an age to be a sibling of William - is there a connection there? Mary b. about 1775 married James Rhodes, son of Abraham Rhodes and Mary Priscilla Gough, 13 Jun 1791-16=1775. Two known children John b.? and Ann Matilda Rhodes b. 1810. Ann married Jacob Richard Thralls b. 1799 in 1830. Lydia b.? married Samuel Barnes before 1801 Rachael b.? married Elijah Barnes before 1801 Loucy b.? listed as a proper heir of William in Phoebe's 1804 relinquishment of dower rights in William's estate. Zerah/Zera b. about 1791, apprenticed 14 Feb 1803-12=1791. Anyway, this is where I'm at. I would really like to find William's birthplace and parents. Taking a shot, I am copying this to the list. Let me know if you can surmise anything else, or find holes in my thinking. Bill Thralls PS. I'll be in the Keys all weekend, so I won't see any responses after 4:00 today until Monday - Have a great weekend
Hey folks, can you turn off the HTML when you send mail to the list? Thanks. According to someone, AOL has a problem with the HTML. On my end, I get RED e-mail background as a result. Can't make it white with out extra work that should not be required. Be kind. Turn it off. Red looks soooo angry. Sharon
There was nothing with this. Thanks, Wendy
Hi, I have a Wilcox in-law in my genealogy. He is Edward or Edwin W. Wilcox who married Mrs. Maria (Durkee) Perry on May 6, 1890 (per obituary) and again on October 17, 1882 (per Marathon County, WI courthouse records). He is the son of Horace and Rachel Wilcox and was born in Erie County, New York in 1852. He may have been married previously. I'm wondering if anyone has him in their genealogy. If so, please let me know. Thanks. Martha Walters [email protected]
